It’s over, and is now in the history books. Just as it’s been for the previous 41 years, your club, Ford F-100 Elite of Northern California, has partnered with Pickups Limited of Southern California to put together a fantastic, fun filled weekend of activities that are centered around those fabulous trucks….The Ford F-100’s. Although the event is open to Ford trucks of all years and models, up to 1976, it’s obvious from the sheer number of them attending that the emphasis is on the 53 through 56 model years. Although it’s been said many times, it should never be forgotten that this is the longest running F-100 event in existence. The two clubs began this event “way back when” as a way to get F-100 lovers throughout the state to get together and compare trucks, ideas, and good times. Like most events, it started small and has grown through the years. However, unlike most events, this annual get-together is still going strong. How many events do you attend that begin their heading with “42 nd ANNUAL”? And, how many can boast having been held in so many different venues throughout the state? I’ve only been involved with the North-South Run for 10 years, but have experienced 3 different locations. I have to say, though, that of those three, this year’s venue was by far the most picturesque, and offered the widest variety of peripheral attractions. The move to Morro Bay this year was a decision that the run committee made after much concern and consternation. From the bulk of the remarks made on the post-event comment sheets, it would appear that the vast majority of people attending felt the move was a positive one. Were there glitches though? Of course there were. But, overall, everyone seemed to genuinely enjoy their time at the run, and most claimed the good times far outweighed the few negatives encountered. The committee is well aware of what the glitches were, and are already hard at work putting together the 43 rd Annual North-South Run with those mistakes corrected. Probably the most often made complaint about the event this year was directed at the Saturday night banquet. There were so many people wanting to attend that we exceeded the occupancy load of the hotel’s banquet room, so a significant number of people had to dine in an adjacent room, and that created a very real feeling of separation from the rest of the group. That fact alone created a ripple effect that made a number of other problems surface. When the hotel’s banquet facility was selected, it was felt that while it might be tight, based on previous years attendance, we should be able to fit everyone in the main banquet room. Lo-and-behold, come Saturday there were a whole bunch of people that wanted to buy extra meal tickets. Rather than turn them down, the decision was made to go ahead and sell the tickets and put the extra people in the second banquet room. That made the committee have to come up with a way to decide who would go in which room. After tossing around a bunch of different ideas (all with at least one drawback), it was decided that the least negative plan would be to simply let the main banquet room fill up, then whoever was left would go to the other room. An attempt was made to inform people of what was happening, but in the short time available to do so, it just didn’t work to get the word out effectively. Since this problem developed during the day’s activities on Saturday, the hotel obviously didn’t have time to call in any extra wait staff to serve the meals, so, of course, there weren’t enough waiters on hand to handle the extra room full of diners as effectively as we all would have liked. Couple that with the fact that all the food that had been pre-ordered for this banquet ran out, and there will still people to be fed (again, a problem that the hotel had little or no time to prepare

Whew! Although it’s been said many times, it should never be forgotten that this is the longest running F-100 event in existence. for). In spite of these set-backs, the kitchen and wait staff “busted their buns” trying to make it work for all involved, and as far as I’m concerned did a great job of adjusting to every restaurants nightmare situation. As for the problem of there being no salad or dessert with the meal, you can lay the blame directly on me. When we negotiated the menu for the banquet, I mistakenly assumed that salad and dessert were automatically included. The hotel prepared and served everything we ordered. Obviously, that didn’t include those two items. All I can say is, I’m sorry, and I certainly won’t make that mistake again. Other than those few shortcomings, the rest of the weekend was nonstop fun that catered to just about every taste. For some, there was a mini golf tournament on Thursday. First thing Friday morning about 25 or 30 trucks participated in the “Mystery Cruise” that had been put together by Laurie Clark, a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club in Paso Robles. The route she chose highlighted the sights of the central California coast, as well as some of the picturesque back roads of the coastal foothills. She also found some great stops for everyone to visit and enjoy. All in all it was a fantastic cruise, and with any luck Laurie will agree to put next year’s cruise together for us. After having Friday afternoon and early evening free to relax, shop, sight-see, or do whatever we wanted, everyone formed up at the hotel with their trucks, and we then cruised in to the heart of town and parked 4-wide down the middle of Main Street. The city had allowed us to block of an entire block for over an hour while we visited another great collection of cars at the Ocean View Garage. When we left there, we did a caravan type cruise of the Embarcadero (the main street for the businesses fronting the harbor) then once again parked on a blocked off street adjacent to the Embarcadero. There, we were directed to a little shop called “Sun-N-Buns Bakery”, who served each participant free ice cream and a cookie. In case any of you didn’t know it, the owner of the bakery donated all those goodies for North-South participants at no charge. The statement he made about that was that he “was honored that we allowed him to be a part of this great event”. If you ever happen to be visiting Morro Bay, be sure to stop in an buy an ice cream cone from them as a way of saying thank you. Saturday was the “Show-N-Shine”, held in the host hotel’s parking lot. Again, because the number of entries was more than we had anticipated, the parking lot was crammed full of fantastic trucks. It seems that every year the quality of the trucks at this event keeps getting better. That isn’t limited to only the “show trucks” either. Even the “daily drivers” seem to be getting better each year. I feel sorry for the people that had to try to do the judging of the vehicles. It had to be hard to try to ferret out the “best”. A fact born out when the “Best of Show” and the “Preston Ledbetter Award” trucks were virtually tied, and that 2 or 3 of the next trucks were within 1or 2 points of those two. Congratulations to the judging teams for a job well done, in spite of the difficult task of choosing the winners. A listing of all the winners, including the gag trophy winners, is listed below. As always, Sunday morning was the time for everyone to turn in their comment sheets, receive a raffle ticket for one of the four $50 cash prizes, give away the money, and say our goodbyes. From what I’ve heard, everyone made it home safe and sound, and your North-South Run Committee is (as previously mentioned) hard at work putting next years North-South Run together. Information about the run, and flyers for it will be out as soon as we can get them prepared. Hopefully, that won’t be long, but there are a couple of things that have to be hammered out before we can lock in all the needed information. Once you have the information, I’d suggest mailing in your entry as early as possible. The majority of “glitches” from this year’s event can be traced directly back to things associated with late entries, and the lack of information that goes with it.

Perko’s Restaurant will be undergoing an extensive remodel and will be closed during the month of October. For October’s meeting only, the E-Board will meet at the Taqueria, located at 1284 W. 11th St., Tracy, CA. It’s next door to the 99 Cent Store, and is almost directly across the street from Perko’s. According to Earl, they have a decent breakfast menu, as well as the usual fare of Mexican entrees’ available all day.

EEAASSTT BBAAYY BBAANNTTEERR Hi from East Bay, If you love F-100’s, the place to be August 17 thru 19 was beautiful Morro Bay, California. The parking lot of the host hotel was full of the finest classic F-100’s in the state. Yes, the 42nd Annual North-South F-100 Run was a success. We hope you plan to attend next year. The sun came out and chrome and paint shined. F-100 and F-1 owners were guaranteed to find something differentthe owners were doing to their trucks. This is what it’s all about. East Bay members attending this year were the Rogers’, the Wallace’s, the Rose’s and Paul Thorn. Chris Rogers and his family also drove down from Port Orchard, Washington. It was nice to see old friends that we have made over the years. The raffle keeps getting bigger; lots of nice stuff. A big thank you to the North-South committee for their efforts to make this run such a success. We enjoyed Morro Bay, and look forward to next year. Remember, your F-100, or F-1 does not have to be finished. There is an award for “Under Construction” given each year too. We hope to see you next year at the 43rd Annual North-South F-100 Run. You gotta go!! FUN CAR FACTS: Windshield wipers were invented by a woman. Mary Anderson patented the invention in 1905. Drivers kill more deer each year than hunters do. Car radios were invented in 1929 by Paul Galvin, who also coined the name Motorola.

Modesto Happenings

By: Bob Hansen Bob and Susan Hansen went to the Grants Pass Fabulous ‘50’s car show in Grants Pass, Oregon. This is an annual show that always fills to the maximum 400 cars at the Show and Shine at the park on the Rogue River, drawing cars from all over Northern California and Oregon. This is followed by a 650 car cruise in downtown Grants Pass in the evening. The whole town gets into the ‘50’s theme with store decorations and period clothing throughout the downtown. Would highly recommend this show for those interested in the trip up to Oregon. After the show, you can always head to the coast to enjoy the beautiful scenery and cool coastal weather – and maybe even catch an Oregon king salmon!

The Wateford Lions benefit car show at Walker Ranch in Waterford was once again a great hit with catered tri tip dinner, unlimited wine and beer tasting, and live band. It’s a small show but a big hit with the community, and the money goes to the Waterford High School Football. It was attended again this year by John and Linda Walsh, Spencer Rose, Ralph and Sherrel Havorson, and Bob and Susan Hansen. It was a good night for the F-100’s as John Walsh won a plaque for Best Under Construction vehicle for his ’56 F-100, Ralph took Oldest Car with his ’29 T-bucket, and the pesky ’67 Mustang got an Award of Excellence, even with the dragon flies in the grill. Linda Walsh’s ’09 Chevy Impala got a few looks, too, parked along with the classics. Special thanks to our hosts Tom and Theresa Powell.

After discussion at our monthly meeting, master woodworker Dusty Johnson and Bob Hansen collaborated on the Modesto Chapter trophy for “Tires” for the North South Run. It was delivered by Mike and Leanne Robinson who attended after truck problems on the way. The lucky winner of the Tires trophy was Mike and Stacy Pecka of the San Joaquin Chapter for their Ranchero. Leanne Robinson reports: “The coordinators did an excellent job to make this an enjoyable event. My hat goes off to them and all who helped with the registration, raffle and daily events…good job everybody!”

North/South F-100 Run 2012 Livermore Chapter

By: George & Carol Withers

Carol and I just returned home from this great and fun event in Morro Bay. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the Event Committee, including our own members Nancy Agrusa and Sydney Crosswhite, for an outstanding job of planning this event. We arrived Thursday evening after a long hot trip down Hwy 5, and then taking Hwy 41 over to the coast, with a stop at Jack’s Café and the James Dean Memorial for lunch.

Page 7: September 2012

7

After a restful night sleep, we woke up Friday morning and got ready for the Mystery Cruise. While we saw a Great Private Car collection and some nice Hot Rod and Custom cars, in progress, at Bear Metal Kustoms, one of the highlights for me was stopping at a small winery for some wine tasting, and then the group proceeded to the next stop In Complete Harmony!! Actually it was to the small town (pop 18) of Harmony, where we toured some of the artist shops and watched glass blowing demonstrations. Friday night was the Embarcadero Cruise Night and Ice Cream Social. The trucks were all staged on one street, where we toured another car collection, and then we proceeded to cruise the Embarcadero and ending up at Sun-N-Buns Bakery for Free Ice Cream and Cookies. As you can see from the pictures, all of these events were well attended,

and I hope enjoyed by all.

As you can see from this picture of “Morro Rock” the fog would roll in each evening and this was greatly appreciated by those of us who have spent the past few weeks in near 100 degree weather. In my opinion, the Fog really helped make this a Very Cool Event!! We are already looking forward to next year!! Once again, our sincere appreciation to everyone who worked so hard to make this event a wonderful experience.

August is a busy month, but then it seems the last couple of months have been that way. Now mind you I do not mind, as I do not have to cook most Friday nights when we hit the every Friday night car shows. But it hits the waistline and the pocket book. But the fun and friends we see every Friday night are well worth it. As the summer is slowly coming to an end so will the car shows. But we still have a couple months left. Not like the all the school kids. We seem to have a longer summer, all the way till the end of October.

Page 8: September 2012

Well, we made it through another great North-South. The weather was great and getting there was just in time. Especially after the heat wave we had been having in the valley. Part of us arrived on Thursday (Art Davis) with the rest of us (Howard and Karen Kleinert) arriving on Friday. As we were driving over Highway 41 we saw the temperature going lower and lower as our excitement kept getting higher and higher till we got to the event hotel. It took a while to get into our rooms, but talking to old friends and enjoying the area was well worth it. We talked till it was time to hit the streets for the ice cream social. But first we made a pit stop at the old garage on Main Street. We closed off the street and had our own show and shine, if just for a brief 1-hour moment. Then it was off for ice cream and great cookies. Now, Mother told us never to have sweets before dinner, but what she does not know will not hurt her. Saturday morning turned out to be the best day of the weekend. But then we did have our raffle and show and shine. The raffle was huge with great things to win as usual. The judging seemed to go off without a hitch. I even saw a girl judging for a change (go Linda Rogers). We could not have asked for a better day. Oh, wait, we still had dinner and awards to go to…. Dinner was great except for two things. It took forever for the meal to be served, and what we did get was not enough. But the company and conversation well made up for it. At least at our table it did. We want to thank Livermore Chapter for letting us (Howard and Karen) be part of their table, we had a blast. Sunday was the gloomy morning as a little fog was hanging around and so were our sad faces, as we now had to pack up and head home to the real world. But we know that more fun is just around the corner. We want to thank the committee for all its hard work and commitment to the run. We know that without all their hard work and time spent the run would not go off like clockwork. So, thank you committee. We hope that some of you will come out to the show September 8th at Kingdon Raceway. You will get to see some drag racing and a great car show all at one event. If you need directions give us a call. Howard, (209) 478-1356. Also I have given everyone a call to give them a heads up on when I will be ordering the club jackets. I plan on ordering after most of the chapters meetings in September so that I can make sure I do not miss anybody. I hope to have all the jackets ready to give to everyone at the Pumpkin Run.

Club Jackets and hats

We are selling ball caps with the F-100 Elite logo. We are selling them for $15.00. This is also your chance to order a club jacket!!!! I will be placing an order for the jackets in September, just in time for the cold weather. I would like to keep the price for the jackets at $75.00. The company that I have do the job is willing to try and work with us. But the more we get the more chances are that we can keep the price at $75.00. If you want to order a jacket let me know.

FIGHT SPEEDING TICKETS WITH THE NEWLY RELEASED IPHONE APP,

‘TICKETDEFENDER’! TicketDefender tracks and reports vehicle’s speeds to protect drivers from undeserved speeding tickets.

TicketDefender is a newly released iPhone App that enables drivers to protect themselves from undeserved speeding tickets by providing a printed report that shows their vehicle’s GPS speed and location prior to the issuance of a ticket. Police radar makes mistakes, lots of them. In America more than 100,000 people per day receive speeding tickets. Some experts estimate that 10-20% of all radar-backed speeding tickets are issued in error and in the case of radar operated from a moving police vehicle the number of inaccurate tickets may be as high as 30%! Yet, the use of Radar is widely accepted and we naturally assume the technology is reliable1. But good news is just an Apple App away. After a truck driver received one these erroneous speeding tickets, he decided that something had to be done. He presented his idea to a friend who is an engineer, and

TicketDefender was born. As a user drives their vehicle TicketDefender automatically records the speed, time of day, and GPS location. If the driver is pulled over for speeding, he simply clicks “Press When Ticketed” to capture the last hour of data and generate the free Speed Report and free Map Report. Instructions for how to print these non-editable, encrypted and watermarked Speed and Map Reports are sent to the driver’s email address. These two reports can be used in court as evidence against wrongfully issued tickets to protect drivers from “the officer’s word against mine” situations. The TicketDefender Speed and Map Reports include the vehicle’s make and model, license number, time and date, the vehicle’s speed recorded every 3-5 seconds and a map showing the vehicle’s location and corresponding speed. If the speed on the TicketDefender report is different from the speed

Page 11: September 2012

11

indicated on the ticket, the driver has a valid "not guilty" argument. This report can then be presented in court or with employers in defense of inaccurate speeding tickets. Radar can often clock incorrect vehicle speeds causing an unwarranted ticket, but until the release of TicketDefender there has been no way for drivers to prove that they were driving at a speed that was different from the speed stated on the ticket. TicketDefender can be a valuable tool, both for

fighting speeding tickets and for proof of speed at the time of a car accident. TicketDefender is certainly a benefit for any driver or commuter and particularly beneficial for individuals whose livelihood depends on a positive driving record such as truckers, bus and taxi drivers. TicketDefender will track any vehicle in which the phone is located, once the vehicle’s data has been entered. One TicketDefender download can be used for multiple vehicles including company and family member’s vehicles. TicketDefender will also multitask; it continues to track speed and locations while you use the phone and other applications. The one time download of TicketDefender can be used repeatedly to give a lifetime of protection from undeserved or inaccurate speeding tickets. TicketDefender for the iPhone is available at the iTunes store for an introductory price of $1.99. To learn more about this exciting new App visit www.TicketDefender.net.

SHAMPOO WARNING I don't know WHY I didn't figure this out sooner! I shampoo my hair while in the shower. When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down over my whole body, and printed very clearly on the shampoo label is this warning: "FOR EXTRA VOLUME AND BODY." No wonder I have been gaining weight! Well! I have gotten rid of that shampoo and I am going to start showering with Dawn dish soap instead its label reads: "DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE." Problem solved! If I don't answer the phone, I’m in the shower!
