Father Ian writes ......As I write this, we are well into August in a year when Summer has been little more than a whimsical notion. It is as if we have been catapulted from early Spring directly into Autumn. Autumn brings the Harvest Season and it is al-ways a relief when all is safely gathered in.

If we have learnt anything in recent decades it is that we cannot continue to plunder the earth and poison the atmosphere indefinitely with impunity. This puts modern man in a dilemma; one which is difficult to see a way through. We have become all too aware of the negative effect that the need to produce more energy, more food together with the apparent expectations of ever-improved standards of living; has had on the earth’s resources.

At the same time, we are aware of the impossibility of arresting what many now see as our ever-accelerating rush to catastrophe. Impossible because world and national economies would collapse and modern western man, ac-customed as he is to the relative “security” of modern living would be unlike-ly to cope. We could hardly begin to contemplate the result. It may be that science and technology may come to our rescue in time, but of that, there is no guarantee.

With hindsight, it would appear that the Industrial Revolution began a direc-tion of thought which developed into an us/it view of the natural world. In harnessing on a massive scale what we call “nature” and assuming mastery over it, we saw ourselves as “above” it and therefore logically as disconnected from it. Now once again, we are beginning to realise that we are ourselves part of nature and that placing our environment in jeopardy is comparable with systematically destroying or selling off the bricks and mortar of our homes in order to obtain by purchase or pillage, all the latest gadgets. We may acquire the gadgets, but they will be of little use if we have no roof over our heads.

Thanksgiving for Harvest is deeply ingrained in the collective psyche of this England of ours. It is an annual reminder, if we will have it, that mankind must exercise a responsible and respectful stewardship of the earth of which he is part; being the pinnacle of the created order only increases his responsi-bility. Secondly, history teaches us that human nature left to itself is wilful,

arrogant and self-destructive and tends to work better when it relates to a higher wisdom; when it sees itself as a “Line Manager” answerable ultimately to the Chief Executive. When human wisdom is informed by the Holy Wis-dom, human love by Divine Love and human activity by the observable Di-vine Activity, the world may begin to heal some of its brokenness. This s the Great Vision in which the Church of God invites you to share and participate.

Visit of the Revd. Simon Leigh

Some of our older readers may remember Simon Leigh, the son of the late Bert and Barbara Leigh. Simon subsequently became a Methodist Minister. He will be paying a short visit to Barbara and will be the guest preacher at the Parish Mass, 10.00am on Sunday 16th September. We look forward to making him very welcome.

The Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament

How well do we prepare ourselves for Holy Communion? Most manuals of spiritual devotion and discipline teach that we should spend time before go-ing to mass to put ourselves in the right frame of mind. Receiving commun-ion can become a mindless habit and suffer from frequent familiarity. It is therefore good to reflect a little on the cost to our ancestors to achieve what is now very much the custom of the Church of England. In most parish churches and in our cathedrals the main Sunday service is the Eucharist (which we also call the Lord’s Supper, the Mass or Holy Communion) and it is often celebrated on weekdays. At St Andrew’s we are privileged to have a mass every day of the week, but that is sadly kept going by a faithful few. You might after reading this think of another day each week when you could receive Holy Communion.

In the nineteenth century, in the early days of the catholic revival in the Church of England, a number of societies were founded to encourage spe-cific devotions. One of these was the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacra-ment. The catholic revival made the Eucharist central to the Church’s wor-ship and was eager for its celebration to be conducted with dignified cere-monial and with proper devotion. It continues with the same objects today to promote:

The honour due to Jesus Christ our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament of his Body and Blood,

Prayer for one another at the Eucharist,Careful preparation for and reception of Holy Communion, including

the Eucharistic fast,The reverent and dignified celebration of the Eucharist and the reserva-

tion and veneration of the Blessed Sacrament,The continuance of the catholic priesthood and catholic theological

teaching, learning and development.

To encourage each other in these objects a Ward is formed of a group of people who come together each month for an act of devotion and so teach-ing. We need to revive and recruit members of the Ward in this parish. We are blessed to have the Eucharist everyday, to have the Blessed Sacrament reserved on the High Altar and to have Benediction from it every Sunday

evening. Please consider what you can do and if possible join C.B.S. There are forms at the back of the Church and one in this magazine on page 12. When completed hand the form to one of the clergy.

The Superior General, Bishop Roger Jupp, has asked me to revive District 4 of C.B.S. and to that end I am inviting people to Church at 11.00 a.m. on Saturday 8th

September to hold a short meeting before our monthly mass for the Society of Our Lady of Walsingham, so try and come to that too, please.

Fr Roger

Something for younger people.

The Young Olympian.

Do you have an ambition? We are told that at the age of twelve Tom Daley drew a picture of his dream. It was of a diver doing a hand stand on a ten metre board with the Olympic rings and 2012 either side of him. Wow! Some dream and some prophecy. I don’t suppose many of us could ever equal that.

The Olympics have been superb despite those people who wished and fore-cast disaster beforehand. They have been a great celebration in all sorts of ways and hugely positive in showing how people can interact and just enjoy life. Long may it continue! Therein lies the task.

A Prayer for Those Growing OldLord, Thou knowest I am growing older.Keep me from becoming talkative and possessed with the idea that I must express myself on every subject.Release me from the craving to straighten out everyone’s affairs.Keep me from the recital of endless detail. Give me the wings to get to the point.Seal my lips when I am inclined to tell of my aches and pains. They are increasing with the years and my love to speak of them grows sweeter as time goes by.Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be wrong.Make me thoughtful but not nosey; helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom and experience it does seem a pity not to use it all.But Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end.

Amen.

Parish ConfirmationThe confirmation on Wednesday 18th July was simply inspirational. Eight adults and two children received this sacrament at a High Mass celebrated by our own Bishop Norman of Richborough. The enthusiasm of the candidates and the charisma of our Bishop guaranteed a joyful and uplifting experience for all of us. It is a cause for celebration, I think, that people from within the parish and beyond are able to relate so easily and naturally to St Andrew’s. That is exactly as it should be and I hope that the I nteraction between the Church and the community continues to thrive in Deal. Our congratulations and love remain always with those confirmed: Angela Green; Declan Green; Nicola Green; Zachary Green; Donna Hennersey; Jacqueline Jolin; Andrew Muir; Elizabeth Reeves; Grace Seabridge and Tracey Huggins.

Fr. Ian.

Our New Parish Priest

The church wardens are delighted to announce the appointment of the Revd Dr Stephen Young as the new parish priest at S. Andrew's. He will take up the half-time post in January 2012 and will be based in the Rectory which is adja-cent to the church.

Father Stephen is currently Senior Curate at St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge; he is also a Deputy Priest in Ordinary at the Chapel Royal of St James, an ap-pointment he will retain. From 1988 to 2002 he was chaplain at St Paul's School, Barnes and then from 2002 to 2011 chaplain at Dulwich College.

He is greatly looking forward to taking up his duties as parish priest at S. An-drew's and will be visiting us from time to time before he is licensed by the Bishop of Dover on the Feast of Charles, King and Martyr, 30th January 2013.

(continued from p.9)Tom Daley was the babe of the Beijing Games at just 14 years old. At 18 years he is now an adult and as he tweeted “the dream and the reality,” accompanied by that drawing made six years ago.

I know nothing of Tom’s beliefs except that he obviously believes in himself and that he still feels close to his dead father. But he is a good role model or if you like a hero. Not perfect, how can he be? But he demonstrates qualities which are worth copying. He has had to cope with bullying at school, with tough disciplined practice at his sport, loss of his father and taking uncomfort-able advice. This he has knuckled down and done what he was asked whileresisting, in the main, the celebrity glamour.

Tom tells us about some tough lessons. He has coped with personal loss of his mentor and father and with transfer to a totally different school environment. He has disciplined himself to a strict regime and put aside the temptations of fame. He is young and therefore vulnerable, but he gives all young people a good role model of focus, determination and endeavour.

We pray that Tom stays on course and thank him for his achievements and determination.

Let us hope we see him in Rio de Janerio, meanwhile he says that it is back to reality.

We can all set our sights on what we want to achieve in the next four years. Would we dare to draw a picture of where we hope to be? If so, where are faith, hope and love in all that?

Fr Roger

Gift Day - 28th July A very big ‘Thank you’ to everyone who gave so generously to our Gift Day. The total is very close to 2500 with about another 400 of Gift Aid to be added. This is a staggering sum and we really are profoundly grateful. We should be able to start work on some of the windows very shortly.Fr Ian and the church wardens would also like to say how delighted they were to be able to speak to many of you in the Market during the day. We felt almost tangibly the goodwill that exists towards your parish church.

Latin Quiz The following has been contributed by a resident, Mr Thomas Frost.

The Principal Latin killer this side of the Huns was Vatican II, when the Latin Mass was replaced by Mass in the vernacular. The consequence is that the seepage of Latin from the Mass to Parishioners has diminished.
