LETTER FROM THE G.M.

Lions, Tigers and Bears…Oh My!

Did anyone notice how the media, both left and right, latched on to the credit downgrade by Standard and Poor’s with the tenacity of a Great White going after a bag of chum? The 11th hour wrangling of the debt ceiling and the subsequent downgrade had just about every media pundit screaming “the sky is falling!” Buried somewhere on the back page no doubt was a report from the International Council of Shopping Centers indicating that retailer’s revenue at stores open at least a year was up 4.6%. Retailers from Target to Macy’s to Saks 5th Avenue are beating Wall Street estimates. Amazingly this bit of good news somehow escaped the media’s attention because, as we know, bad news sells.

We certainly have our share of issues to be concerned about. Our local housing market is still on the mend and we keep our fingers crossed like a Lutz pretzel that visitor numbers will keep improving. In fact our visitor numbers are leagues ahead of where they were in 2009 as well as 2010. Group travel is on the rise again. Hotel occupancy is high. Yes, the Dow has been on a rollercoaster ride. It always has been and always will be. But strong retail sales have driven some positive data on the economy and they will continue to improve, albeit not as quickly as some may like, but they will im-prove nonetheless. So though not to sound like Dr. Phil, but I choose to focus on the positive and to improve upon that. Within our walls we have the finest collection of shops, restaurants and galleries on Maui, nay, the state. I say that’s pretty good news. A hui hou!

MANAGER OF THE MONTH

KRISTYN BORKOVICH

of BETSEY JOHNSON

was transplanted to Maui in June 2007 and has been working for Betsey since February 2008. On a normal day, you may see her grabbing coffee in a poofy dress or tying a giant bunch of pink balloons on the door for one of Betsey’s killer sales. When she’s not rocking out at Betsey Johnson, she can be found on some trail or another with her boyfriend James, or cuddled up with a good book and her kitty Monty. Kristyn’s quote: “Come play dress up with me!”
