Dr. Joshua Freeman, Chair, Department of Family Medicine, is pleased to share the news of the appointment of Dr. Heidi Chumley to Associate Vice Chancellor for Education. The following is a letter from the Executive Vice Chancellor for the University of Kansas Medical Center, Dr. Barbara Atkinson, announcing Dr. Chumley’s appointment:

Faculty, staff and students:

I am pleased to announce that Heidi Chumley, MD, the

Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, will be

promoted to Associate Vice Chancellor for Educational

Resources and Interprofessional Education. In her new

role, Dr. Chumley will be reporting to Karen Miller, the

Senior Vice Chancellor for Education and Academic

Affairs. Dr. Chumley will continue in her current position

as Senior Dean for Medical Education.

Since being appointed Senior Associate Dean in 2008, Dr. Chumley has done an out-

standing job of overseeing our exceptional medical education programs, and the estab-

lishment of our Salina School of Medicine campus, which officially opens next week. In

her new role, she will now manage the library, teaching and learning technologies, cul-

tural enhancement and diversity, and a new center for inter-professional education.

The integration of technology in health care education continues to be rewarding and

challenging. In an effort to keep pace with this rapidly changing world of educational

technology, we have decided to bring the library and other learning resources closer

together with our educational programs in all schools, under Dr. Chumley's leadership.

Additionally, our recent strategic planning process highlighted two other areas of im-

portance to all schools: to increase diversity, cultural competence and professional-

ism; and to implement effective inter-professional education. To accomplish this, we

are transitioning the Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity from the School of

Medicine to a campus-wide office. Patricia Thomas, MD, will remain the Associate

Dean for Cultural Enhancement and Diversity for the School of Medicine. We are also

creating a new center for inter-professional education, which we believe will encour-

age more collaborative practice and learning among all our students.

I am very excited about this new era of interdisciplinary education at the medical cen-

ter and I know all of us are eager to see our progress under Dr. Chumley's leadership.

Please join me in congratulating her.

Happy Birthday to You!

New Grant Awarded

Congratulations to Allen Greiner, MD and Natty Mabachi, PhD, on their award of a U54 Supplement Award (1 year). The goal of this project is to develop, implement and evaluate a CHE directed education and outreach pilot project that uses an online networking platform to create a central repository where Latino and American Indian community health workers can access and share culturally appropriate cancer-related health information resources, knowledge, ideas and experiences for more effective cancer prevention community outreach and education. Additionally, several HRSA grants have been submitted and the research division is waiting to hear about applications for Faculty Development (Dr. Joshua Freeman), Predoctoral Training (Dr. John Delzell), and Residency Training (Dr. Deborah Clements).

Recently graduated Chief Resident Ryan Neuhofel has

opened a new medical clinic in Lawrence, Kansas named

“NeuCare”. Dr. Neuhofel will begin accepting new

patients in the fall, but he’s already got his website up and

running and it’s worth taking a look at. His philosophy

about bringing back “the good ol’ days of health care” is

evident in his mission statement:

“Our MISSION is to provide high quality,

affordable primary medical care directly to our

community.”

Dr. Neuhofel states on his website that he believes

“doctors and patients can return to a direct, cooperative

relationship. NeuCare is a 21st century version of the

neighborhood family doctor — a primary medical home

that provides affordable, quality care directly to our

community. Bravo Dr. Neuhofel! Check out his website at:

Each year the residents plan an off-campus retreat which includes fun as well as involving teambuilding and a

welcome to the new 1st year residents. This year the residents tried something alittle different on August 26th and

went on a tour of Kansas City. They started out at the Roasterie near KU off 25th street and toured the plant. Then

they headed by tour bus to the Harley Davidson plant located up north near the KCI airport and had a tour of that

facility. Then they headed for lunch at the Ameristar Casino and ended their day of touring at the SubTropic caves

near the Ameristar Casino. For fun, they played laser tag in the caves! Sounds like a great time was had by all!
