In this meeting you will learn the differences between the various types of testing (aptitude, achievement, norm-referenced, criterion-referenced, for- mative, and summative), as well as understanding what the ACT, SAT, and IQ test scores actu- ally measure. Information will also be presented on how colleges and universities use these numbers to determine admission and eligibility for scholarships. Superintendent to Present Boundary & Facility Proposals on September 13

SMSD Public Feedback
Shawnee Mission School District is required by KSDE to provide a venue for feedback from parents, patrons and community
members related to technology in our district. This information must be included in our district’s technology plan submission to
KSDE this fall.
Beginning August 30, there will be a ―new story‖ on the district website and a posting on the district’s Facebook page to allow
for public feedback. Input will be collected through both of these venues through September 7. Please visit either site to share
feedback about technology in Shawnee Mission.
International Club/AFS
Fall lobster sale will be Saturday October 9, with orders due by Monday October 4; parents will receive
an order form or check the SME website. Information Night for student exchange programs and hosting
will be Tuesday September 21 in the SME Library.
35mm SLR Cameras Needed
As we get more into the digital image age, students taking Photography at school are not likely to have access at
home to a 35mm SLR manual camera. While the art department does have a number of cameras that students can
check out, we still need more. If you have a working 35mm SLR camera at home that you no longer want, you
might consider donating it to the SME photo department. We would be most appreciative and grateful. Please
contact Adam Finkelston or Shelly Trewolla.
Friends of the Library Used Book Sale
October 23 is the date for this year’s Friends of the Library Used Book Sale which will be held in conjunction with the SHARE
Garage Sale. We welcome donations of new or gently used books of any kind, CDs, audio books, cassettes, and DVDs. You
may drop off your items at the library on weekdays, any time from 7:00-3:30. Call 913-993-6617 if you have questions.
Plan now to attend this special event! There will be bargains galore with most books priced at .50 or $1.00! Join with us to raise
money for new technology for our Library Media Center. We appreciate your support!
FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………
Did you know why we keep flavored milk in schools? Studies revealed that eliminating chocolate and other flavored milks
from school cafeteria menus resulted in a dramatic drop in milk consumption along with a substantial reduction in nu-
trient intakes of students--which are not easy or affordable to replace. When flavored milk was not available, many chil-
dren chose not to drink milk and missed out on the essential nutrients that milk provides. On days when only white milk was
offered in cafeterias, milk consumption dropped an average of 35 percent.
To replace the nutrients lost from the decline in milk consumption:
Required three to four different food items to match milk's nutrient contribution
Added back more calories and fat than were being reduced
Added back roughly half the sugar, netting a savings of only 15-28 grams/week
Required an incremental $2,200 to $4,600 more annually per 100 students
We have worked with our dairy to have flavored milks reformulated. They now contain no high fructose corn syrup and con-
form with the Alliance for Healthier Generation beverage guidelines. Our flavored milks only have 130 kcal and 22g of sugar
per 8 oz. serving. White milk naturally has 12g of sugar per serving.
The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website at
http://www.smsd.org/parents/foodservices.htm.
