SEPTEMBER 2007

Letter from the Publisher,

Dear Students,

The time has finally arrived when you can officially rip off the tags to your brand newshirts and jeans. Tie the shoe laces to your hottest pair yet to be seen. This is the timeof year when the halls of school are now the catwalk for all supermodels to strut.Where students all believe this first impression makes or breaks us. This is the onemost anticipated night before you could not sleep you just laid next to your laid outclothes awaiting your alarm clock.

This is also the time of year when the big dogs of the eighth grade are the little fresh-man of high school. This is also the time of year where the juniors of last year plan tomake this the most memorable senior year. This is the day of the school year whereyour lunch spot maybe determined for the rest of the school year. This is the one timeof the school year where you can probably be late going to class because all of yourexcuses that usually would not work during the school year will actually work. This isthe day that begins endless possibilities of goals; we are all rooting for the 4.0!! This isCelebrity High's Favorite time of year. Let the anticipation begin.

Sincerely,

Coline Witt

After a summer of sleeping in ordoing things on your time, thealarm bell announcing that first

day of school can be a rude awakening.Whether you're an anxious new fresh-man or a confident senior, heading backto school signals a time of transition:new classes, new teachers, new sched-ules, and a new social scene.Dread it or love it, you have to go toschool. Here are some ways to makethe transition from summer to school alittle easier.

FIRST-DAY MANIAThere's no escaping the fact that thefirst day of school can be crazy. Newkids wander around in circles. Lockerswon't open. The school nurse needsyour medical records. You forgot yourgym shorts. Freshmen are running in alldirections, looking for their homerooms.

How can you combat first-day chaos? Ifyou're headed to a new school, try toarrange a visit before classes begin.Explore any areas that are of particularinterest, such as the gymnasium, library, or science labs. Some schoolsoffer maps. Get one and give it a readbefore school starts - then keep it in

your backpack until you're familiar withyour new surroundings.

Your first day is also the time to bringin school supplies and paperwork. It canhelp to pack your backpack the nightbefore school starts so you're notscrambling around at the last minutelooking for what you need. In addition topacking basic supplies (such as note-books, pens, pencils, and a calculator),hunt down any of the school forms thatwere mailed to your family over thesummer: immunization (shot) records, permission slips, and class schedules.

Did you try on eight different outfitsbefore deciding what to wear? Lots ofpeople check out who's wearing whaton the first day of school. The key is towear what makes you feel good, whether it's a brand-new outfit or acomfy old sweater. If you plan to wear anew pair of shoes, break them in a fewdays beforehand or your feet mayscream for relief long before last peri-od.

Each school has a different opening-daydrill. Some start with homeroom or anassembly, but others may jump right

into the first-period class. You'll meetyour new teachers, and they'll probablygive you an overview of the course syl-labus, class rules, what the semesterwill be like, what supplies you'll need, andexpectations of your performance andbehavior. Some teachers will jump rightinto their first lesson, while others mayhave non-coursework activities planned. It all depends on the class and teacher.

EMOTIONSHere's a simple equation: new place =new emotions. Lots of people feel anx-ious, scared, or excited about school.Although people who are coming backas seniors may be happy they're in theirfinal year and can't wait to visit withfriends, most freshmen or new kids arelikely to be tense or worried. It's perfectly normal to feel nervous onthe first day of school. Getting back tothe school routine and adjusting to newworkloads takes some getting used toafter a long summer break. If you'rehaving a mental meltdown, think backto some previous "first days."Everything probably settled down pret-ty quickly once you got into the routine.

Meeting new people or getting reac-

quainted with classmates can feel over-whelming, especially if you're the shy orreserved type. Start small: If largegroups make you nervous, try sayinghello to one or two new people a day -the kid at the desk next to yours inhomeroom is a good place to start. Orask new people to sit with you in thecafeteria.

If you still feel uncomfortable after afew days, talk to the school guidancecounselor, a favorite teacher, or some-one else you trust about how you'refeeling and what you can do. But giveyourself time - most problems adjustingto school are only temporary.

MAKING YOUR WAY THROUGH THELUNCHROOMWhat's everyone's favorite period?Lunch, what else? But with foods liketacos, pizza, or cheeseburgers staringyou in the face when you're at yourmost hungry, it can be hard to makehealthy choices. Here are some tricks to choosing foodsthat will keep you focused and activethroughout the day - as well as help yougrow and develop throughout the schoolyear:

aGet a copy of the menu. If yourcafeteria provides a weekly ormonthly menu, check it out.Knowing what's on the menu putsyou in control: You can pick andchoose which days you want tobuy lunch and when you want tobring your own.

aHead for the salad bar. If yourschool offers a salad bar, takeadvantage. If you'd rather pack, consider adding carrot sticks, apiece of fresh fruit, or pretzels toyour lunch bag.

aThink energy. Some foods arebetter choices than others formaintaining energy during the day.Choose low-fat proteins, like chick-en, beans, or low-fat yogurt andadd lots of fruits and veggies toyour meal. They'll provide the vita-mins and minerals you need andthe energy to get through the day.Foods that have a lot of simple car-bohydrates, like sugary snacks, donuts, or french fries may giveyou a quick rush of energy but it'snot sustainable - which meansyou'll be left wanting more soonafter you eat. The same is true ofdrinks filled with caffeine or sugar. You don't have to cut these outentirely - just enjoy them in moder-ation.

aStop for a snack. You can't con-centrate or absorb new knowledgewithout a well-fed mind and body.So take along a healthy snack, likecarrot sticks or trail mix, to staveoff hunger between classes (don'tmunch during class, though, or youmay face a reprimand!). Not onlywill this keep you going, it will alsohelp you avoid overeating whenmealtime finally arrives.

HAVING A BRAIN DRAIN?School seemed simple when you wereyounger. Everyone told you where to go,what classes to take, and how to finishyour homework. Now things are differ-ent; there are so many choices and pri-orities competing for your time. Stretchyourself too thin and you may find your-self feeling stressed out. Here are somethings you can do to help regain control:" Plan ahead. Get a wall calendaror personal planner. Mark the dates ofmidterms, finals, and other tests. Notethe due dates of term papers, essays, and other projects as they are assigned.List any other time commitments youhave, like basketball practice or playrehearsals. When your calendar startsto fill, learn to say no to additional activi-ties until things calm down.

aStay ahead. Try not to fall behind. If you feel yourself falling behindand starting to feel frustrated, letyour teachers know. It's better toget help early on than to wait andthink you can ace the final if youspend a few nights cramming.Almost everyone struggles with aparticular subject or class. If you'rehaving trouble with a particularsubject or homework project, askyour teacher for extra help afterclass. Taking a few minutes toaddress the problem right awaycan save time later, and if yourteacher knows that you're strug-gling with something, he or she islikely to be more understanding ofthe situation.

aListen up. Paying attention inclass can actually pay off in thelong run. Sure, it's often easier saidthan done, but actively listeningand taking notes during lecturescan make recalling information eas-ier when it comes time to studyand remember things.

aTake notes. If you take notes andreview them before class begins(or while studying for an exam),you can ask a teacher to go overanything you don't understand. It

can also be helpful to go over noteswith a friend after class - as longas you're confident your friendreally grasps the material! Learninggood note-taking skills in highschool also helps put you ahead ofthe curve in college, when good lec-ture notes are key to studying anddoing well.

SURVIVAL TIPSHere are some more things that can helpput you ahead in school:

aThe old saying "breakfast is themost important meal of the day" isnever more true than when you'regoing to school. Students are morealert and perform better in class ifthey eat a good breakfast.

aGet enough sleep. Studies showthat teens need at least 8½ hoursof sleep each night to feel rested.Sleep deprivation can lead studentsto fall asleep in class (embarrassingif you're caught!) and can alsomake it hard to concentrate. Itcan be more productive to getthe sleep you need than it is tostay up late cramming: A recentstudy found that students whogot adequate sleep before amath test were nearly threetimes more likely to figure outthe problem than those whostayed up all night.

aDo more at school and you'llhave less to do at home. Takeadvantage of those times duringthe school day when you're not inclass: Review notes, go to thelibrary or computer lab, get ahead-start on your homework, orresearch that big term paper. You'llbe thankful later while you're at themall or a concert and your class-mates are stuck at home cram-ming!

aOne of the best ways to makefriends and learn your way aroundis by joining school clubs, sportsteams, and activities. Even if youcan't kick a 30-yard field goal orsing a solo, getting involved in otherways - going to a school play, help-ing with a bake sale, or cheering onfriends at a swim meet - can helpyou feel like a part of things.

School is a time to make friends and trynew things, but it's also a place to learnskills like organization and decision mak-ing that will come in handy for the restof your life.

After applauding the bandmembers that made itinto Making The Band 4.

You could not help to wonderwhy Donnie J was not in thegroup. Donnie j was talentedand consistent with a real like-able personality. Why was henot in the band? Why would anyone think of leaving him behind? Then the moment that almostbrought a tear to everyone'seyes happens. P.Diddyannounces that Donnie will bereceiving a solo deal with BadBoy!!! The crowd goes nuts!!!

Celebrity High is excited to gosolo with Donnie J.

What is the name of your firstsingle?

I'm not sure yet... I'm getting into thestudio starting in October.

What is it like having a realityshow on MTV?

It's definitely crazy. Especially havingthe opportunity to be on a show likethis- I got to learnso much from so many different tal-ented people- it was a blessing.

Who are your musical influ-ences?

I grew up listening to all of the early90's R&B groups like Boyz II Men, DruHill, Jodeci.. As I got older Igot into Nsync and Usher... of courseMichael Jackson.

Have any of you met a particu-lar star and was star struck?

Of course when I first met Diddy I wasstar struck. Not only did he hold myfuture in his hands... but I had grownup listening to him as well.

When can we expect the albumto drop?

Early 2008

Donnie? What was it like whenyou heard P.Diddy say that youwere going to get a solo deal?

It felt like forever between when hepicked the group and then he pickedme. I was just happy for the guysthat made the band and it didn't reallyhit me at that point that I hadn'tmade it. Then Istarted to think about my family andhow let down they must've felt. Then Iheard him call my name and it wasjust a huge rush-- like a huge weightwaslifted off my body. It was the bestfeeling I've ever had.

1What can we expect fromDonnie?

I'm going into the studio with an openmind. I know between my image andbeing on Making the Band 4 I have abroad audience waiting to see whatI'm going to come out with- So i'mgoingto feed off that and try to come upwith something new.. Something thatwould fit both r&b and pop genres.

What is it like when you visityour home towns?

My home town is going crazy. I defi-nitely have to thank my family, friends, and all my fans from backhome and around the country forbeing behind me the way they havebeen. Who knows- if I hadn't won thevote on Making the Band 4- I might nothave received the deal from Bad Boy.?

What's worrying you aboutgoing back to school? Weasked our readers (ages

14-17) to tell us what worries themmost about going back to school.More than 600 people replied. Athird of all those who took our sur-vey said they worry most aboutschoolwork. No surprise there.Getting ready for a new year of

schoolwork can definitely be chal-lenging because you'll be learningmore advanced things. So worry-ing about whether you'll do wellenough in school is pretty com-mon. If this is your biggest worry,at least it's nice to know you're notalone.

But not everyone said schoolworkwas the thing that worried themthe most. Just as many readers

said they worry mostabout social issues

like fitting in, hav-ing friends,

beingjudged,

or

being teased. And since social lifeis such a big part of school, it's nota shock that so many studentssay social issues are their biggestworry.Besides schoolwork and socialstuff, another category rankedhigh on the worry list: appearance.One-fourth of the people whoresponded to our survey saidappearance issues worried themmost of all. If this is you, you'vegot plenty of company, too.

WHAT YOU DO ABOUT ITWe also asked you to tell us howyou plan to cope with the thingsthat worry you most, and whetheryou have advice for others whofeel the same way. Here are someof the things you said:

SCHOOLWORK WORRIESRachel, 15, told us, "I'm kinda hard onmyself, like I feel really bad if I don'thave a 4.0 grade average."

Lots of people are hard on them-selves, but worrying can just addto the pressure. Here are some ofthe plans you have for coping withschoolwork:

Zach, 18, says, "Better time manage-ment. I need to stop talking with thesocial butterflies and get to work!"

Michael, 16, plans to "come home, take a quick break, and then get start-ed on my work straight away.Procrastination only brings frustra-tion!"

Finding the Right Balance - andSupportFallon, 16, says, "Finding time foreverything is going to be a challenge!"

Daniel, 14, agrees, and adds, "I playsports so I have to keep my grades upto play." How does he keep the bal-ance? "Work really hard and lean onmy parents for lots of support. If youhave parents around that actuallytake an interest in you, take advan-tage of that and let them be there foryou."

Relying on other people for supportand advice is popular when itcomes to schoolwork and balanc-ing all the pressures school canbring.

Dana, 14, advises, "Use the guidancecounselor. That's why they are there."

Nisha, 15, says, "I'm just going to picka few things to commit to so I don'toverload myself."

Balancing school with life's otherdemands also includes stayinghealthy. Lots of you told us thatyour goal this year is to eat well, get plenty of exercise, and lots ofsleep so that you'll be primed tosucceed.

Social Pressures and ProblemsWhen it comes to the social scene, making new friends is one of thebiggest worries people mentioned.Lots of you said that you wereworried friends would be in differ-ent classes or even at differentschools. Some talked about feeling shy andawkward:

Jessie, 15, says, "I'm going to try tomake new friends and talk more. Don'tworry about being awkward becauseothers are too. Lots of people are goodat being cool, but they are insecuretoo."

Finding a safe, welcoming group isa great foundation for dealing with

the ups and downs of school. "It'simportant to have your own little or biggroup that you can hang out with,"says Jessie.

Many of you are concerned aboutdrifting apart from friends andbreaking away from existingfriendships to start new ones.

Leanna, 14, says, "I am stressedabout the groups and who I am goingto sit with because I have differentfriends in different groups."

Tim, 14, worries about "making newfriends without ex-friends spreadingrumors."

Brittany, 15, who worries aboutdealing with "rude old friends"offers this advice: "Be nice to every-one, you never know who you mayneed help from in the future."

Using kindness to stop meannessin its tracks is one good way todeal. Jessica, 16, has another strat-egy for coping with rude people: "Ijust ignore them. It drives them crazywhen you don't act or seem like youcare about anything they have to say."

Amanda, 14, says her way of deal-ing with rumors and gossip is "tohold my head up high, smile, and try tocreate a new reputation for myself.Change the negatives into positives!"

LOOKING GOODHow we feel about the way we look

is closely tied to social issues, feel-ing comfortable, and being accept-ed.Says Codi, 14, "I am not usually a shyperson, but starting high school in anew school is scary. I don't know any-one other than those on my soccerteam. I am afraid that once they seeme out of my soccer clothes and in myskater cut-up clothes they won't wantto talk to me."

"At my old school, I was the most popu-lar girl," says Emily, 14. Now, shesays, she's worried because, "I'mstarting to get acne and developing."

Gaining weight and dealing withbody changes were big issues formany of you.

It's natural to worry about appear-ance, but lots of you said thatyou're going to try to keep thingsin perspective.Mickie, 14, told us she has no wor-ries about starting school, butshe does have this advice forlooking good on the first day:"Wear clothes that fit your style.Don't wear something that makesyou look like a poser."

And Lia, 14, reminds us, "If you'reworried about your clothes and howyou look, just remember that it'swhat's on the inside that matters."

We couldn't agree more.

HOROSCOPE

ARIES You need to stop worrying about what other people are thinking (ifthat's an issue), and just get started on the next big thing. Youmight have to enlist the aid of a few extra friends and allies.

TAURUSDoes it feel like the rest of the world is in a huge rush to gonowhere? The odds are good that you're feeling pressure that does-n't seem especially focused. Ignore it and do things your way.

GEMINIYour ambitions are out in the open right now, either romantically orprofessionally (or maybe both). It's a great time to move ahead andtake care of all the little things that have to happen before you getthere.

CANCERBe a little extra wary at work or school, because people are sure totease or otherwise try to rile you up -- and that won't be too diffi-cult! If you can count to 10 before responding, you'll do fine.

Leo At work or at school, someone new comes on the scene and turnsyour mind around on some important issue. You're in exactly theright place to take advantage of the new perspective, so get readyto act! Virgo You're spoiling for a fight, so make sure you pick a good one! Ifthere's nothing happening in your personal life, you may want tochoose a political cause and get involved. You can do a lot of good!

LibraYour home life could be everything you had hoped for today -- or itcould be everything you want to avoid. The good news is that ifyou're unhappy, it won't last long -- you'll lighten up in just a coupleof days.

ScorpioWhether you're on the job or speaking with your family, you need tokeep your tone light and friendly. Conflict could turn ugly fast giventoday's energy, and there won't be much anyone can do once itstarts.

SagittariusNow is the perfect time to spruce up your love life. Even if you'vebeen partnered up for years now, your good energy is just right forrekindling that spark you both remember. If you're single, you won'tbe for long!

CapricornNo matter how dire the situation may seem, you just need to keeppushing. Fortunately, that's something you're quite good at -- perse-verance might as well be your middle name! Someone close mayneed encouragement, too.

Aquarius Amaze your friends with your latest big idea -- they never get sickof hearing about them. Something you came up with recently isjust about ready for prime time, so move on it before much timepasses.

PiscesHave you ever had one of those days in which nothing made muchsense? You're totally bewildered by someone or something thatseems like a big deal -- but it will turn out to be nothing special inthe long run.
