26th Sunday: Deeds and not Words Only (MT: 21:2832)

In the 1st reading, Israel knew that they have a corporate responsibility, as the
chosen people, to set a good example to other nations. But with their national
institution “Temple” destroyed, their corporate responsibility was in question, a
renewed emphasis on “individual responsibility” came into focus. Ezekiel
stressed “individual responsibility,” children are not punished for the sins of
their parents, but their own. Anyone is free to have a change of heart, from his wickedness to righteousness.
We are judged by our new life and not by our sins of the past.
Phil. 2:111 was an exhortation to harmony, in two ways. Negatively, by giving up rivalry and conceit. Positively,
through humility, acknowledging that most of the time others are superior to us, in their charity, putting the
other first than oneself.
Jesus, confronted by the scribes and the Pharisees taught them a lesson on the importance of “deeds and not just
lip service.” He made it clear that no lip service or claiming to know God’s Law can automatically gain
access to His Kingdom. It is a sincere metanoia a change of heart that God wants, reminding us that it’s not
“because of,” but “in spite of” our past, He sees our hearts and He shows MERCY.
Metanoia: Change of Heart
1. The Parable of the Two Sons is proper only in the Gospel of Matthew. The Gospel stressed the importance of
conversion. Israel was like the 2nd son who said “Yes” but failed to follow God’s Law. The Pharisees
preached but did not practice what they preached. They did not “walk their talk.” On the other hand, many
publicans, Jesus mentioned the tax collectors and the prostitutes, who for a time had fallen away but had a
conversion, a metanoia, a change of heart found their way back to God.
2. God is completely different from human beings; God sees the recesses of our soul. He is a merciful and
compassionate God. He forgave the servant who owed Him a huge amount (Mt. 18:24) and condemned the
same servant for not extending the same mercy to his fellow servant who owed him a much smaller debt. He
is merciful, but cannot be forced by our scheme of the standard of rewards and merits, good intention is not
enough. The intention and the action must both be good.
3. In deeds and not just in words. We are normally turned off by people of “empty promises.” Consumers
patronized companies that live up to their advertisements. A teacher who promptly corrects and hands back
the test papers is esteemed by her students. A quiet worker who gets things done is admired by his employer
than a talkative one who constantly boasts of his accomplishments. McArthur is revered in the Philippines
because he kept his words: “I shall return.”
4. Man sees the face, but God sees the heart. None of those who cried out in Mt. 7:2123, Lord, Lord will enter
the kingdom of God but only the one who does the Will of My Father in Heaven. Lip service and external
service is not enough for God, He wants our heart in place, in communion with Him. How often have we said
no, but after some thought realized our mistake and with a contrite heart do what the loving Father commands.
We all have our weaknesses, like the Prodigal Son, “I shall rise and go to my Father and say, Father, I have
sinned against you…” (Lk. 15:18) Our merciful and compassionate God, who sees all our weakness, fills us
again with His love and peace.
5. If there was a third son in the story, he would have been the son par excellence, He is the Son of Man, and the
Son of God. His whole life was a constant “Yes” to the Will of the Father. In the garden of Gethsemane, “Not
my Will but your Will be done.” (Mt. 26:42) The ideal son, Christian attitude is the imitation of the “third
son.” A son who does not rebel, remonstrate, or contradict. He goes out of Himself courageously to embrace
the Will of God. His “Yes” is a “Yes” which He does not take back.
“The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, and
the fruit of service is PEACE.” (St. Mother Theresa)
We have Small Christian Communities, located
throughout our parish neighborhoods, that gather for faith
sharing and fellowship. All are welcomed. If you’re not
already part of a community, contact the office.

A Note from the Religious Education Department . . .

Greetings in Christ,

As you know, we are experiencing unprecedented times. The challenge has been how to catechize our
faith family while staying within the guidelines of the CDC, as well as not to create another frustration for you, the
parent. Because this is brand new territory for all of us, we are expecting glitches along the way. We, at St. Rose,
appreciate your patience as we work through this process.
As human beings, we tend to be resistant to change. Our brains are wired in a way to take the path of least
resistance, develop habits and routines, and stick with them. The longer we have a habit, the harder it is to
change! When it comes to Faith Formation, we have developed practices and habits over many decades, and as
faith formators, have conditioned our parents to act as chauffeurs, dropping our kiddos off at religious education
class, grabbing a coffee, taking a quick run, or taking a muchneeded nap. Not a criticism here, but something that
I, myself would do!! The problem we are facing today is that we cannot just drop off the children because we are
in the middle, but we pray daily for the end, of a pandemic. It is for this reason that we have taken time in
presenting alternative models for catechesis. As always, the safety of your children and you are important to us.
As it is time to register for the 202021 year, we want to take a moment to outline our program.
This year at St. Rose we will be utilizing Family Catechesis along with the hybrid model. As you know,
the hybrid model refers to classes where there are planned in person classes as well as online learning. Below is
the outline of our program:

1. We will not be offering a PreSchool program this year
2. PreK, Kindergarten, 1
st
and 4
th
grade Family Catechesis & Zoom
Each registered family will receive a program syllabus, family instruction materials, and a book where
required
We will also include activity/craft materials designated in the lesson
You will be asked to participate in a monthly ZOOM meeting that will review and tie up the lessons, as
well as answer any outstanding questions. (Time: 1 hr)
3. Sacrament Preparation Reconciliation/Confirmation/First Eucharist
Two classes will be held in person monthly, while one will be virtual (ZOOM) (Time: 1 hr)
In person classes will be in the main room of the Parish Office with 12 kids only
4. EDGE Transition will be held on two Mondays of each month at 4:30pm in the Church Office
5. EDGE program will be held one time monthly on Sunday from 2pm3pm in the Church, with one Sunday
of Adoration with Matt. Mask will be required. Social distancing and hand sanitizing will take
place.
6. LifeTeen program will be held one time monthly on the 1st Sunday from 2pm3pm in the Church, with one
Sunday of Adoration with Matt. Mask will be required. Social distancing and hand sanitizing
will take place.
7. Sacrament Preparation for Grades 6 12 will be held two times monthly in person with one virtual lesson

In Person Class Set up and Safety Measures

There will be 6 tables that measure 6’ long with one chair at each long end
A plexiglass divider will be placed in the center of the table running the width
Children will come in the front door, have temperature taken, sanitize hands and be seated with 56 ft of
physical distancing provided
Once class is finished, the children will proceed to the “back door”, sanitize their hands, exit through the
back, & with an adult, walk around to the front to be picked up by parents.

All tables, chairs & restrooms will be cleaned & disinfected before and after classes

Pontifical Good Friday Collection
Pope Francis and Bishop Olmsted have asked us to
support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps
Christians in the Holy Land. The collection is usually held on
Good Friday, but it was rescheduled this year to September
13, just before the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
We are spiritually united with Christians in the Holy Land
through our prayerful support and through donations which
directly make a difference in the lives of those caught up in
war, violence, and instability in the region where our Lord
Jesus walked.
Your support helps the Church minister in
parishes, provide Catholic education, and offer
catechesis and formation. It also helps preserve
religious shrines and provides
humanitarian aid to refugees.
