30th Annual Saints Peter and Paul School Golf Outing Thursday, September 13th at Cress Creek Country Club

Golf Angels still needed! Over the years, school families have dealt with job loss, catastrophic illnesses, dissolution of their marriage, or even the death of a parent. Those life-changing experiences are compounded further if children have to transfer from our school due to the inability of the family to pay tuition. This year, Fr. Baker has received requests for $125,000 in financial aid. This impacts approximately 50 students. Since 1989, our Golf Outing has raised $1.5 million to help meet this need. The need is so great, however, that we are in need of Golf Angels to assist our efforts. Perhaps you can join us for golf at Cress Creek on Thursday, September 13th. Maybe you have tickets to a sporting event which you could donate. Or maybe you want to help this cause by making a tax-deductible donation. Whatever you can do to support this event will be greatly appreciated. Please go to our school website, www.sspeterandpaulschool.com, and click on the 30th Annual Golf Logo image to register as a player, sponsor, or auction donor. You many also call our Advancement Director, Frank Glowaty, at 630-718-2134 for additional information.

Rainbows for All Children St. Raphael School, 1215 Modaff Road, Naperville Rainbows for All Children offers free, structured, age-specific peer support groups, facilitated by adults, for children who are grieving the loss of a family member as a result of death, separation/divorce, incarceration, deployment, deportation, a life-threatening illness, or other life-altering, traumatic events. Support groups at this location currently are helping chil-dren 4 years old through the end of middle school from all economic, racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Children are able to grieve, communicate and heal among peers; they no longer feel alone in their grief, and can gain confidence from each other in a totally confi-dential setting.

All too often, science is falsely pitted against Faith to disprove the tenants of Christianity. In this informative talk, Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ – expert in physics, philos-ophy, and theology – debunks this powerful myth as he discusses the Big Bang and the Origin of the Universe with sound reason, credible science, and faithful theology. This talk is a must-listen for anyone wrestling with the biggest questions regarding Science and Faith. "If you think that the Church and Science are at odds, you have to listen to this CD." Ray - Peoria, IL

"Fr. Spitzer proves that science and faith can co-exist harmoniously." Aaron - Palm Bay, FL

"I am in such awe at the incredible mind of Fr. Spitzer. I need to listen to this more than once!" Julie - Sterling, VA

Do you want to be an Altar Server? Altar servers enhance the quality of liturgical celebrations by serving the priest at Mass and other liturgies. This is great way for young people to learn more about the Mass and to take an active role in the Church family. Boys and girls, 4th grade and older, are invited to join the altar serving ministry. We will begin our training sessions on Thursday, September 27th at 2:15pm. Additional sessions will be held on Tuesday 10/2, Wednesday 10/10 and 10/17, and Monday 11/2. These sessions will all begin at 6:30pm. All sessions will be in the church and will last one hour. New servers are required to attend two of these training sessions before they can begin the “shadowing” portion of the training process. Parents, please accompany your child to one of the meetings for a short informational session. If you have questions, please contact Deacon Michael Crowell at [email protected].

Saint Vincent de Paul

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always, though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. —Thomas Merton Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organiza on, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradi on of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Today’s Gospel is taken from Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23, where the Pharisees and scribes confront Jesus asking, “Why do your disciples not follow the traditions of the elders? Why do they eat before washing their hands? Why do they not wash after going to the marketplace where they might have unconsciously touched some unclean person or food?” Coming from Jerusalem, the Pharisees and some of the scribes have assembled together, hoping to find some accusation against Him, something to charge Jesus with before the Chief Priest. Already in Mark 3:6 the Pharisees have sworn to destroy Him. Those who should have been most receptive to the coming of the Messiah have traveled from Jerusalem, the center of religious practice, with the intent of finding fault with Him. The words “assembled together” foreshadow when the Jewish leadership will assemble together to condemn Jesus to death. Their opposition to Jesus is reaching a fever’s pitch. They challenged Him because some of His disciples did not follow the strict Pharisaic interpretation of Mosaic dietary laws that they wished to impose on all Jews – regulations intended only for priests that they claimed were passed on by their elders. These laws governed personal and communal life, including diet, hygiene, work, rest, health, and worship. Failure to live out these regulations, in their mind, polluted a person, making them unfit to stand before God. Interestingly though, when we listen to the reproaches of the prophets, those sent by God to bring Israel back when they had gone astray, their reprimands never focused on lapses relating to dietary or even ritual laws, but rather are directed at the most privileged in Israel because of their lack of justice and mercy toward their fellow man. The prophet Amos condemns those who lie on their lavish beds, drinking choice wine and feasting on fattened calves, making merry, while their brother Israelites are impoverished: “Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall! Improvising to the music of the harp, like David, they devise their own accompaniment. They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph!” (Amos 6:1-7) Amos condemns those who trample on the weak and the poor, mocking righteousness and abusing even the most vulnerable among them: “Because they sell the just man for silver, and the poor man for a pair of sandals. They trample the heads of the weak into the dust of the earth, and force the lowly out of the way. Father and son go to the same little girl, profaning my name.” (Amos 2:7) While outwardly they observe the Sabbath rest and ritual observances, they long for the night to pass so that they can return to their cheating and mistreatment of others: “’When will the new moon be over,’ you ask, ‘that we may sell our grain, and the Sabbath, that we may display the wheat? ‘We will diminish the ephah, add to the shekel, and fix our scales for cheating.’” (Amos 8:4-6) All this is done with the priests’ blessings, who profit from the sin offerings the wealthy publicly make: “Come to Bethel and sin, to Gilgal, and sin the more. Each morning bring your sacrifices, every third day, your tithes … proclaim publicly your freewill offerings, for so you love to do so, O men of Israel.” (Amos 4:4) Quoting from Isaiah the prophet, Jesus rebukes the Pharisees: “Isaiah did a good job of prophesying about you hypocrites; as it has been written: ‘This people honor me with their lips, but their hearts stand far off from me; they worship me pointlessly … You forsake the commandments of God and hold fast to the traditions of human beings.” (Mark 7: 6-8) Jesus then turns to the crowd, to an audience more receptive to listening and says that it is not what enters the body that pollutes, making one unfit before God, but rather, what comes out. What corrupts is what spews from a selfish and greedy heart: “From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphe-my, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.” Jesus strikes at the roots of human sinfulness. Jesus makes it clear that it is how we think, choose, and act that defines personal holi-ness, not mere words or empty religious practices. He wants us to adhere first to the weightier matters of love and justice. He is a God who cares how we treat those in our charge, especially those among us in need - the weak, the poor, and the lonely. Do we give to others their just due? Are we generous with God’s gifts to us? Do we pay lip service to love or can others see love in our choices and actions? Are we as generous, loving, and forgiving to others as we are to ourselves? Do we advocate for justice? Let us pray for the grace to do so. Let us admit where we have failed, where we are called to do more, and begin anew today.
