WE ARE SUNSMART You may have already noticed Victoria’s UV levels are steadily rising so it’s time to dust off that sun protection gear and get into full SunSmart mode! The weather may still be cold and grey some days but please don’t be fooled. It’s the UV that can damage our skin and eyes. We can’t see or feel UV but at this time of year it starts to increase in intensity. Daily sun protection times are available on the school’s website, on the free SunSmart app and in the weather section of the daily newspapers.

During the sun protection times (whenever the UV levels are 3 or above) please remember to:

INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS A rainy Tuesday put paid to this year’s Tooleybuc Sports and there was much disappointment for the staff and students who were eager to participate. The sun shone for the Secondary Athletics at Ouyen yesterday and I am sure all of our students appreciated the efforts of Robyn Kentish and Tonya Taylor to ensure they were able to be involved. I thank the parents who also attended for their extra support. Emma Templeton performed particularly well and is to be congratulated for her commitment to training – a clear example of reward for effort. A full report will be published in next week’s newsletter. WELCOME On behalf of the school community I would like to welcome Chris Pearson to our staff. Chris is taking over the reins from Cheryl Storer, who is taking some Leave from the start of next week. Chris has previously filled in for this role and has been reacquainting herself with the various duties alongside Cheryl this week. We also wish Cheryl the very best during her period of Leave.

Year 2 & 3 News

Over the past couple of weeks we have been reading about The Funny Old Man and his eventful trip out last

Wednesday week. After having morning tea with his friends at the coffee shop he went to the supermarket to pick

up a few things for the evening meal. After talking to the cashier he made his way to the exit but as soon as the

door opened, he realised that he didn’t know which way to go! We have spent a lot of time reading this text in

pairs so that it will become familiar and much easier to read. In pairs we have written lists of questions using Why

What When and Where as the starting point. We have also written questions where the answer is not contained in

the text as well as some ‘text changers’ where if something didn’t happen, it would change the course of the story.

We have also learnt how to spell twenty of the less familiar words – cashier, decision and even instantaneously.

Once we have had attempts we look at the parts that are still causing trouble – these are the parts that are

stopping us from spelling the word correctly. It is interesting that despite many Year 3 students having been at

school for more than one hundred Wednesdays – it is still a word that is commonly not spelt correctly. The ‘dne’

which produces the ‘n’ sound is a very unusual letter pattern – if you know this then Wednesday becomes an easy

word to spell! This week we matched the text sentences with some that were written in more familiar language –

we could use our knowledge of word meanings such as conversation means a chat, talk – and the word

‘predicament’ means a problem. In Maths we have been practising our basic number facts – it is important that a

good mathematician has a fast, accurate recall of these facts. We have also been looking at lines – diagonal,

curved, horizontal and vertical and assigned a value to each letter of the alphabet to calculate the value of each

word. We have had our usual personal practice which allows each person to work on their own topics and learn at

their own pace. Unfortunately the Tooleybuc Sports had to be cancelled on Tuesday due to the rain but we have

spent a lot of time practising for our concert items. The students should be bringing home clothing requirements

for our grade performance – there are many items that you would probably have lying around the house – it would

be great if you could send them in if you happen to have them. I don’t want people going out and buying expensive

props. Don’t forget the Father’s Day Primary Assembly tomorrow – it will start at the earlier time of 9:30 –

following on from the Father’s Day BBQ. Hope to see lots of dads stay around for the showcase of what your

children do at school.

Tasmania Camp

20 students from Years 7-10 were lucky enough to experience the Tasmania Camp. Many were surprised how fragile and unique this pristine state is. The students were challenged by being out of their comfort zone. The busy 5 day itinerary included:

an overnight travel on the Spirit of Tasmania

Chairlift ride across Cataract Gorge

Pizza and Movie Night

Late night shopping at Kmart

Tasmania Devil Unzoo (the people are in the zoo and the animals are in the wild)

Port Arthur guided tour, tea and Ghost Tour

Port of Hobart, Salamanca Place

Cat and the Fiddle Arcade

Laser Tag

Jetstar flight from Hobart to Melbourne

Many of the students will hopefully have had an amazing time and learnt much about Tasmania and its historical past and unique fauna. They also were encouraged to develop independence and resilience. A big thankyou to Mr Wayne Riches for driving us 2200kms and safely home, Mrs Lyndal Taylor and Mrs Liz Glazebrook. Thank you to the School Council for subsidizing this camp and making it possible for students to experience this amazing environment, hopefully they will have positive lifelong memories in years to come after they recover from exhaustion!

Resource Smart Team News

The Resource Smart Team came together to decorate boxes to collect photo copy paper to be

reused. Ten boxes were placed strategically around the school to encourage people to use both

sides of photocopies. Thanks to the library staff for allowing us to use their space and the

contact off-cuts after covering books.

Enviroweek is the last week of term three. The Eco Demonstration House at SuniTafe (Swan

Hill) has an open day, Sunday 11th September. A free scavenger hunt starts at 10.00 am.

Footy Colours Day

Tomorrow is Footy Colours

Day. All students are invited to

wear a top with the colours of

their favourite football team,

from any code of their choosing, for a gold coin donation. Please

note that this is not an out-of-uniform day and

that school uniform applies for pants and shoes.

Team socks and scarves are also permitted.

Members of the SRC will be running activities at

lunch time from a range of football codes and all

students are welcome to come along and join in.

Outdoor Education Students in Outdoor Education will need a suitable bike,

helmet and change of clothing for bike riding sessions during lessons each Thursday. The school

has some bikes available for student use, however not enough for all students. It is

important students have their own helmet.

The Uniting Church will once again be holding a Fashion Parade as their main fundraiser for the year on October 23rd at 1.30pm in the Manangatang Hall. Some garments will be cash sale on the day by the providers; Jeans West, Millers, Pumpkin Patch and Kerrie Barry.

$10 entry includes afternoon tea.
