York resident Miguel Nascimento is hoping for a personal best, but admits

he’s dreaming of winning a medal as he prepares for the 100-metre breaststroke at the Paralympic Games in London, England on Saturday.

“I feel great coming to London for my fi rst Games. I am very anx-ious to get into the pool and give it my all in the race,” he said by email from London.

The 18-year-old member of the York Swim Club is swim-ming for Portugal because he is a Portuguese citizen.

He may one day swim for Canada, as his family is in the process of seeking permanent residency and future Canadian citizenship.

But for the moment, he is focused on Saturday’s competi-tion.

“I am currently ranked ninth in the world and so I plan for a personal best in the morning in order to get into (the) fi nals,” said Nascimento, who lives southwest of Eglinton Avenue and Dufferin Street.

wall has been touched at the 100-metre mark. If a medal happens to come by as a result of it, it would be a dream come true. However, I know that I am still young and still have my career ahead of me.”

Nascimento moved to Canada at the age of seven for medical treatment. He was born with a congenital misalignment of the right hip joint, which initially went undetected by doctors in Portugal.

When he began to walk, his parents noticed he limped consid-erably. The boy underwent three surgeries and was placed in a cast that stretched from his feet to his chest. A stick was placed between his knees to keep his hip in place.

Unfortunately, the position of the cast and the length of time Nascimento was forced to wear it resulted in him developing avas-cular necrosis, which is the cellular death of bone components due to an interruption of the blood supply.

“Eventually, at the age of six, walking became very painful for me and I could only walk about 500 metres before needing to stop,” he said. “The doctors told my parents I would eventually need a wheelchair.”

When doctors suggested Nascimento be treated at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, he moved here at the age of seven with his family.

Fortunately, swimming has improved his condition tremen-dously.

“I had been swimming all my life. However, it was about a year or two after my move to Canada that I started practising in the pool more often with York Swim Club and entered the world of competitive

swimming,” he said.“I was scheduled to have surgery

in Toronto. However, due to the vast improvement in my muscle development and strength from swimming, it was decided that the surgery would be put off for a later time to assess the status of my hip and the necessity of surgery. I am very fortunate to say that to this day, I have not required it. Although I still have my disability and the pains and difficulties along with it, I am still able to walk and do most things other people are capable of.”

Nascimento trains up to nine times a week, including hitting the pool at 5 a.m. before school and then gets back into the water after school.

“York Swim Club is my second family. I have been with this family from the time when I was a child newcomer that barely swam, let alone spoke English, to now where I am competing at the Paralympic Games,” he said, also offering thanks to his coach, Fisiha Kebede.

“Without this family, I would not be where I am today and, for that, I am very grateful in ways that words cannot truly express.”

Charlotte Carroll, a volunteer with the swim club and friend of the Nascimento family, said the young man has a lot of people in Canada rooting for him.

“I’m super excited to be in London and I can’t wait to race and share my experience with everyone. This is a once (hopefully more) in a life time moment and I’m cherishing every single part of it,” he said. “I am truly honoured and lucky to be with this great club and I could not have done it without all the support from every single person.”

LAURA BOOTH [email protected]

In one night last Thursday, com-munity organizations, police, elected officials and youth came together to suggest improvements needed to youth services in order to curb incidences of violence.

York South-Weston MPP Laura Albanese hosted the town hall at the York Civic Centre on Eglinton Avenue West.

“We do not benefit by staying in our own little corners and advo-cating our own preferences at the expense of others, (who) must be at the table for it to work,” said Rev. Michel Belzile of Greenborough Community Church, who was the moderator for the night.

He continued: “So today is an occasion to be at a table together and to share our thoughts and con-cerns about the work that is being done with regard to youth services and crime prevention in our com-munity,”

The meeting centred on the pan-elists from community organiza-tions and a question period from the audience.

In the centre of the room, seated in a semi-circle, community rep-resentatives from UrbanArts, Frontlines, For Youth Initiative, Youth in Policing, and the Somali Immigrant Aid Organization (S.I.A.O.), were asked to address how youth services and crime prevention work well in the community and what needs to be improved.

All panelists commented posi-tively on the visibility and active nature of the politicians present, however they were not shy to share their thoughts on needed improve-ments, including better community outreach.

“People don’t know that there’s an organization a half-a-block down the street that can address their issues,” said panelist Const. Jim Lambe of Toronto police.

“People are just not aware of what is out there for them to reach and access. I’m sorry, but I think that communication is something that we all have to work on.”

Other comments from panelists included reference to a lack of pro-gramming available for youth with mental health issues, poor youth literacy skills in the neighbourhood,

and high-school drop-outs.Community planner Yasmin Haq-

Khan, from Social Planning Toronto, took the stage earlier in the night to present findings from an Aug. 2 com-munity forum on safety, violence prevention and community devel-opment. She stressed the problems addressed revolved around issues of racism, poverty, racial profiling from police, and lack of support for youth in the education system, among many others.

Elected officials were also in attendance including Albanese, MP Mike Sullivan, Councillors Frances Nunziata (Ward 11) and Frank DiGiorgio (Ward 12), and Don Valley East MPP Michael Coteau, who presented the provincial gov-ernment’s Youth Action Plan. The 30-day report was launched by the provincial government to “improve coordination and integration of services, and ultimately increase opportunities for youth and improve youth outcomes.”

“Obviously you don’t find solu-tions in one evening like this, but you again, you bring people together and you start breaking the barriers,” said Albanese.

Your VieW

There will be a whop-ping 289 feature films and 83 shorts shown

at the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival that begins this week and I must confess I haven’t seen them all. Hey, what can I say, I’m human.

Anyhow, there obviously isn’t room here to review them all so I decided to narrow it down to my favou-rite three. Incidentally, the first two are Canadian films.

n Sole MatesMaureen Sandal is a

single, retired podiatrist who runs a successful speed dating service in Toronto called One Step At A Time. Sheldon Moccasin, also single and a retired podiatrist, runs a compet-ing speed dating company across town called Put Your Best Foot Forward.

Long-time cut-throat rivals in both fields, they bump each other at a gala

Starring Kim Cattrall as Maureen Sandal.

Co-starring Donald Sutherland as Sheldon Moccasin.

Martin Short as Hy Heels.Catherine O’Hara as

Starring Matthew Perry as Ben Mulroney.

n The Unhit Man There is good news and

bad news for the Godfather, Don Corny-Onee.

The good news? He just became a dad for the very first time.

The bad news? According to family tradition his baby will need a godfather and he only knows five godfathers and has contracts out on all of them. Oops.

Ah, but which one to spare? And will it even be possible? Time is rapidly running out. The christen-ing is in two hours and 33

minutes, closing credits not included.

That leaves him no choice but to call to the only man that can possibly extricate him from this mess, the scariest guy alive, Antidote, aka, The Unhit Man.

Starring Adam Sandler as Don Corny-Onee.

With Charlie Sheen as Antidote.

Featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as consigliere Crash Bamboom.

To the editor:While Dallas is coping

with its worst outbreak of the West Nile virus, cases have emerged in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

This mosquito-borne virus is cause for concern. Mosquitoes can carry malaria, a disease that has killed 1.2 million people in 2010, mostly children.

However, thanks to Toronto residents, progress is being made to protect these children and provide for their needs through gift catalogue purchases such as mosquito nets and clean water projects. Toronto is among the Top 20 most charitable Canadian cities to make donations through our catalogue this year.

On behalf of our organi-zation, I thank you all for your kindness, generosity and compassion.

Fear of mosquitoes a shared phenomenon

Toronto residents will be impacted in a number of ways if proposed changes are made to federal riding boundaries within the city.

The changes usually come about every 10 years to reflect shifts in population and ensure each riding serves an approximately equal number of voters across a particular province.

What that means for Toronto is an increase from the current 23 ridings (one of which crossed the municipal border of Toronto and Durham Region) to 25 ridings, all of which would be contained within Toronto.

The boundary changes will see Canada’s Parliament increase in size by 30 seats to 338. Fifteen of those proposed seats are in Ontario, which means the provincial Legislature will increase by that number as well.

Torontonians need to be aware, though, that these changes reflect the continuing growth taking place in the 905 regions surrounding our city. While Toronto essentially gains two seats, the 905 will see an increase of nine. The Hamilton and Barrie areas also each gain a new seat.

Federally and provincially, the gain to Toronto’s influence is tiny – but combined with our neighbours in the 905, the Greater Toronto Area’s power has grown substantially.

This is hugely important for our city in areas such as transit and economic development. What is needed is a willingness for federal and provincial representatives to work together for the good of the entire GTA, not just the communities that elected them.

Also of interest for Toronto residents is the impact the changes could have on Toronto Council. Redistribution would create a scenario in which Toronto Council could increase from 44 members to 50. Whether that will happen ultimately lies with the province, but the justification is there based on the number of proposed ridings.

What is most needed now is feedback from Torontonians.

Residents in southeast Scarborough must surely be pleased that they will not have to share their MP and MPP with Pickering; and North York residents should feel they will have a stronger voice with the addition of another riding – Don Valley North. North Toronto residents should also feel an increase in their voting power with redistribution creating a Mount Pleasant riding.

Public hearings on the plans are set for Nov. 14 at the North York Civic Centre and Nov. 15 at Metro Hall. Also, contact your MP and share your views.

During my initial garden consultation, I ask clients how much sun their front

or back yard receives. This ques-tion is not something most clients consider during their day-to-day lives so usually they will not know the answer or assume their out-door space is in full sun.

Sometimes, a couple will dis-agree on the amount of sun or shade in their garden.

In this situation, I find the answer on my own. When I return to the property to take some initial measurements, I pay careful atten-tion to the sun’s direction. You can also do it yourself this summer with these simple guidelines.

What time is it?Believe it or not, the intensity

of sun changes at different times of the day. Morning sun between seven and eight is less intense than the sun at noon. How much sun the north-east corner of your garden receives will not be the same as the north-east corner of your neighbour’s property. Large shade trees and fences will create shadows in your garden at differ-ent times of the day.

My advice is to check your back garden over four time periods: nine in the morning, noon, 2 p.m.,

and five in the afternoon to see what the light conditions are in your garden.

You can do a sketch on a piece of paper and draw a full circle for sun, a filled in circle for shade and a half-filled circle for part sun. Part sun locations receive about four hours of direct sunlight.

Many successful gardeners do a lot of investigative work on their property before they start to plan a garden.

You may not be able to check all the light conditions in one day, but over a week or so it’s easy to take a peek outside at the four time peri-ods. The sun is at a different angle in the summer (located higher up in the sky) than in the winter, but summer is the main growing season for plants so that’s what you need to focus on.

Dappled light, full shade or somewhere in between?

A shade garden calls for a differ-

ent palette of plant material. What type of shade you have is critical to understand.

Under an oak tree canopy, very little light will penetrate through the foliage so you will have full shade conditions. However in the spring before the leaves come out, sunlight will shine through the branches.

Therefore, you will have a selec-tion of spring bulbs and earlier flowering perennials to experi-ment with under the canopy.

Dry shade welcomes different plants than a moist shade envi-ronment at the bottom of a slope. We need to consider what type of shade we have in our gardens.

Gleditsia triacanthos var. Inermis (honey-locust) is a deciduous tree with small leaves that produce dappled shade. This effect will allow a greater diversity of plants to be grown in the sur-rounding area that would suit a woodland edge.

Keep track of your light condi-tions this growing season and plant accordingly.

The Energy Star rating applies to houses, tooWhen most people hear the words Energy Star, they usually think about the rating of energy-efficient appliances.

But, did you know that your newly built home can also be qualified as Energy Star?

In 2005, Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency developed the Energy Star for New Homes initiative in support of the Gov-ernment of Canada’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Energy Star for New Homes promotes homes that are approximately 20 per cent more energy efficient than a typical home in your region.

Qualified homes are constructed by build-ers participating in this national initiative and these builders work with qualified energy ad-visors to incorporate energy efficient features into the design of their new homes.

A qualified new home also reduces green-house gas emissions by approximately three tonnes per year.

Typical features of an Energy Star qualified home include: • Higher levels of insulation;• High-performance windows, patio doors,

and skylights;• Heat recovery ventilator mechanical system;• More efficient heating, hot water and air

conditioning systems and Energy Star qualified products. With Canadians spending an average of

$1,147( annually just to use electricity in their home, imagine your total electrical costs after 30 years. It makes financial sense to choose a home that delivers energy savings over the long run.

When you see the Energy Star label on a house, you know that it is an energy efficient home with lower energy demand.

According to Breakfast Clubs of Canada, studies show that kids who eat a healthy, bal-anced breakfast are more in-terested in school, are better able to concentrate, and have stronger social skills than those who don't. Here are some easy tips to get kids pumped about breakfast:• Make breakfast a family affair:

The easiest way to encourage kids to eat a healthy breakfast is for parents to do the same. Set time aside each morning to sit down and eat as a family. Kids

are much more likely to imitate the behaviours they observe.

• Get the kids involved: Let the kids contribute to menu selec-tion to make them feel invest-ed in breakfast. Big families can plan a weekly schedule that allows each child to par-ticipate on a given day. This approach also helps families plan ahead (and even prepare the night before), making breakfast more enjoyable in the morning.

• Think outside the plate: Break-fast smoothies are an easy way

to pack a nutritious punch. Here's an easy one using in-gredients that most families have in their kitchen: put 2 cups of orange juice, ½ cup of strawberry yoghurt, 5-6 whole strawberries, a peeled banana and 5 ice cubes in a blender. Blend until smooth. Customize the consistency by adding more or less of any of the ingredients or swap the strawberries for raspberries, depending on preference.

It's that easy.– www.newscanada.com

Take the chaos out of breakfast

Pack a peanut-free lunch boxIt’s back to school time again! Aside from buying new clothes and school supplies, you may want to consider what to pack for your kids’ lunches and snacks - just make sure it’s peanut-free!

These days it’s not uncom-mon for schools to completely ban peanuts and peanut prod-ucts. With food allergies af-fecting approximately six per cent of young children (Health Canada), schools across Cana-da are restricting certain food

items, including peanuts, pe-cans, walnuts and cashews.

To ensure your kids’ lunches are safe to bring to school, start by reading the school’s policy on food allergens in the class-room – make sure you know what is, and isn’t, allowed.

Peanut-free foods are easier to find now than they used to be. For example, many prod-ucts in the grocery store now have easy-to-read logos on the front of packaging and on individually wrapped food and

snacks, especially for items geared towards kids.

Avoiding products with nuts or other allergens for your kid’s classmates may be a chore at first, but it’s a smart and sim-ple step to ensure safety in the classroom.

A peanut-free environment is easy to maintain by look-ing for clearly marked food packages and making minor changes to your daily meal routine.

Community

The Iglesia ni Cristo (INC or Church of Christ) is opening its doors to the community Saturday following almost $800,000 in reno-vations.

The open house at 71 Guestville Ave., near Eglinton Avenue and Weston Road, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Free resources will be avail-able to residents, including basic

health and wellness service booths, family studio portraits, children’s games and face paint-ing, food and refreshments, musical entertainment and guided tours of the renovated chapel, which totalled $780,000 in upgrades, solely funded by the church.

Renovations in the main sanc-tuary include the installation of

a crystal chandelier on a new ceiling, fresh carpet flooring, new pews, redesigned pulpit and choir loft, and a new organ. Openings from the original windows still provide natural light into the chapel, supported by the exposed brick which was preserved during the renovations. The smaller buildings and surrounding areas of the compound also received

general face lifts including land-scaping and an addition of stucco finishes on exterior walls.

The property was previously owned by Mount Dennis United Church and was put on the market last fall. The 23,800-square-foot chapel and surrounding com-pound was purchased by INC in March. The chapel has a congre-gation of about 500 worshippers.

It was about a year ago this week that Doug Ford started talking about Ferris wheels

and monorails and gigantic shop-ping malls for Toronto’s port lands. It didn’t go well for him or that plan, but a year later, after having spent a few days in the Etobicoke North councillor’s favourite town, Chicago, I can see how he got worked up about it.

Chicago is world-famous for many things – the deepness of its pizza, its intricate history of crime and corruption, its fantastic archi-tecture – but for a visitor staying in a downtown hotel, I have to say: nothing beats its waterfront.

Jogging and biking trails wend up the river and along the water-front for miles. There are marinas and parks and an aquarium. There is even a giant Ferris wheel, and yes, the view from the top of it is spectacular.

Ford’s family business takes him to Chicago frequently, and it’s not hard to see how fl itting between that place and the rust-belt splen-

An example for our port lands

dour of much of Toronto’s waterfront could make a fellow impatient.

Next week, Doug’s brother, Mayor Rob Ford, will be looking at the plan that emerged from the wreckage of the dream of quick commercializa-tion of the port lands. Council asked for it last year – a revised plan to see exactly what the city and the development industry could do to actually make something of its waterfront.

While there’s great potential for develop-ment in the port lands – there are a total of 900 acres of land ripe for the picking – very little can be developed without some very major infra-structure.

In total, the consul-tants hired on to look at the area estimated it

will take $1.9 billion in infrastructure improve-ment to make the lands worth anything in terms of development. When asked, developers said even if the city sold them the whole thing for $1, they wouldn’t be able to build.

It could literally take generations to see the whole thing built out.

That’s not necessarily a discouraging thing; Chicago’s waterfront today is, after all, the cul-mination of a plan more than a century old, using land given for public use along the lake. The battles for a public water-front were mostly fought in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, just as Toronto’s battles were waged in the late 20th century and continue in the 21st.

Which is to say, we’ll get there eventually. There is precedent.
