Labor Day or Labour Day both in the U.S.A and Canada basically have the same history and meaning. The holiday was created by both countries’ labor forces. The holiday focuses on the rights of workers, with a long weekend of celebrations, picnics, parades and ceremonies. Although it is not a military holiday we should always take the opportunity to give tribute to our military, police, firefighters and medical personnel for all the work they do in keeping us safe and out of harm’s way.

Why Be a Member of FMO? The FMO is the only organization in the State of Florida that watches over the

interests of the people living in manufactured homes. The Florida Mobile Home Act (Florida Statute 723, F.S. 723) was enacted in 1984, in part to address the relationship between the Sun, our park owner, and you, the Homeowner. The legislature recognized that the mobile home owners have certain basic property rights, which must be protected. The legislature also recognized that the park owner had certain rights that needed to be protected. They also are included in the law. F.S. 723 is a document that all manufactured home owners should be familiar with. You should all have a copy of it so you can refer to it when you need to. It covers such items as: • Your Prospectus or offering circular • Failure of a park owner to provide a prospectus • Park owner’s obligations • Homeowner’s obligations • Rules and regulations • Dispute settlements • Evictions, grounds and proceedings • Lot rental increases • Reduction in services, or utilities • Change in rules and regulations • And many, many more F.S. 723, as well as many other statutes, are available directly from the state offices in Tallahassee at the Division of Land Sales, Condominiums and Mobile Homes. By phone (800) 226-9101, or (850) 487-1395. Request the Mobile Home department and ask for copies of F.S. 723. They are also electronically available from the FMO website. Your prospectus is a very important document. If you do not have a copy of your prospectus, it is still available from Tallahassee for a small fee. It can be requested from the DBPR Division of Florida Land Sales, Condominiums and Mobile Homes. The prospectus governs the park rules and regulations, rent increases, utilities fees, garbage and mowing fees, use of amenities, and much more. Sun is obligated to keep the prospectus updated with any changes mandated by Florida State law. With the exception of rules and regulations which require a 90-day notice of change by Sun, no other changes can be made without 100% of the homeowners voting yes.

Dear Ariana Village residents, I wanted everyone to know that it has been a wonderful experience to be here with all of you. Please know, it was a very difficult decision to make, but I am looking forward to being closer to all of my family. This move allows that. I thank all of you for your understanding in this decision. I also want to assure you, while Sun is searching for a new manager, Jessica Showalter will be covering Ariana Village. She is the manager at a sister community, and will be splitting her time between the two communities in the interim. She comes to all of you with a lot of experience and will be available to assist you in anything that may arise. Jessica and I have had an opportunity to discuss, in detail, all of the projects that are currently happening and will be sure to push forward with them. Jessica and I were also able to go over the day to day items to ensure this is a smooth transition. Please feel free to contact the office with any questions or concerns, as it will continue to have the same operating hours as normal. I treasure the friendships that were made in this short time and I will miss all of you. After I am settled in, I will make a trip to visit. Sincerely, Beth-Ann McCourt

Hello everyone! Usually August is a quiet and slow month here at the village. It wasn’t this year. The biggest change was Beth Ann announcing that she was leaving to take charge of a larger RV park in the Bushnell area, just an hour north of us. We had a time in the clubhouse where Beth Ann told us the details of her leaving and informed us that Bill and Cher would be staying and working on the list of things that needed to be done. We also learned that Sun Communities sent a water drainage specialist to our village to study and write a “needs to be done” list. This list includes the roads, drainage pipes and ponds. On the 21st of August destruction of the mail building began. We will each have a new mailbox with our correct lot number on it. Permits are holding up the improvements to the pool area. That includes new fencing and pavers (to cover the concrete). The problem with the underwater lighting has been fixed. The kitchen has had electrical upgrades done so we can use it. In January we should have a fully functional kitchen again. Several homes have been sold and so we will soon have many new neighbors. We will miss our friends who have moved. The board is looking into ways to encourage new folks to become involved and fill in the empty places that former residents were involved in. As of this writing no announcement of a new manager has been made. An email will let you know when we find out. My final item is that the negotiation team finished a 5.5 month job of working on and signing a 3 year lease agreement with Sun Communities. It wasn’t without a lot of stress and many meetings. If you remember, we appointed a committee of 5 residents, including 3 winter folks, last January. Talks stretched out with no compromising on the part of Sun. Our winter folks left and Tim Thum and Richard Skidmore approached Sun for another “last ditch” meeting to see if we could avoid the $20 one year increase Sun would impose if no settlement was signed. The board met and appointed 3 new negotiators for that meeting and Sun sent an official to the meeting who had the authority to make a final decision. Thanks to the last minute work of our committee, Sun compromised and our lot rent increases will not be $20, but $16, $16, and $17 in the final year of the contract. Details will be coming in a letter from Sun by October first. A big thanks to the committee (both the first one and the second one) for hanging in there and doing a great job for us. Have a great month.

LEARN THE LIFE-SAVING 1-2-3 RULE IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

Do you know what to do if your grandkids or loved one needs help during an emergency? Today, one in three Canadians lives with a medical condition that needs to be communicated to an emergency responder during a medical emergency. Blair Bigham, paramedic and physician, says the first step in surviving an emergency is making sure emergency responders or Good Samaritans can be easily made aware of any medical conditions. “In these situations, having a Medic Alert Medical ID (usually a bracelet) is invaluable because it speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves, helping connect emergency responders to the information they need during those early moments of an emergency when time is of the es-sence.” In 2016, an estimated quarter of calls to Medic Alert’s emergency hotline were from Good Samaritans. When dealing with someone who appears to be in distress, Bigham recommends the following steps:

Identify yourself to help make the person feel comfortable and at ease. State your name and that you’re there to help.

Call 911 and provide as much information as you can. Assess circulation, airways and breathing.

Check for a Medic Alert Medical ID to find out if the person has a medical condition and inform emergency responders.

Now is the perfect time to get a Medical ID if you need one or don’t already have one. The ID is affordably priced, but if you need financial help, the Medic Alert Foundation offers programs to cover all or part of the cost for people with diabetes, asthma, allergies, heart conditions, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. To Die for Crock Pot Roast

Ingredients: A good cut of beef chuck for the roast itself; this recipe calls for about 2 2.5-pound chucks, but I usually just make one 2-3 pound piece. Make sure that it is marbled and has lots of fat. The better the cut, the more delicious the roast. 1 packet dry salad dressing – Italian 1 packet dry salad dressing – Ranch 1 packet dry Brown Gravy ½ cup of water

Instructions:

Mix the salad dressings and gravy packet with water,

pour over the roast and set in the slow cooker for 8 hours on low.

If you want to thicken the gravy after the roast

is cooked, add some flour in a skillet with the au jus.

(Easy Strawberry Cheesecake Continued From Page 3 of “Micki’s Corner”) Directions: -Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease a 9×13 pan. -Combine the crust ingredients in a small bowl. Press the mixture into the bottom of the pre pared pan. -Bake the crust for 10 minutes, then set aside to cool. -Reduce the oven temperature to 300°F (148°C). -In a large bowl, blend the cream cheese, sugar and flour on low speed until well completely combined and smooth. Be sure to use low speed to reduce the amount of air added to the batter, which can cause cracks. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. -Add the sour cream and vanilla extract mix on low speed until well combined. -Add eggs one at a time, mixing slowly to combine. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to make sure everything is well combined. -Pour the batter into the pan with the crust and spread evenly. -Bake the cheesecake for 30 minutes. -Turn off the oven and leave the cheesecake in the oven with the door closed for 20 minutes. -Crack the door of the oven, with the cheesecake inside, for 15 minutes. This slow cooling process helps prevent the cheesecake from cracking. -Put the cheesecake in the fridge to cool completely, 3-4 hours. -To make the strawberry topping, combine the sugar and cornstarch in a large saucepan. Stir in the strawberry puree. -Cook over medium heat, stir constantly until mixture thickens and come to a boil, about 15 to 20 minutes. -Allow to boil for 1 1/2 minutes, then remove from heat. -Stir in vanilla extract and chopped strawberries and allow to cool for about 15-20 minutes. -Pour the topping over the cheesecake and allow to cool completely, 3-4 hours or overnight. You could serve the sauce immediately, but it will thicken as it cools. -To make the whipped cream, add everything to a large mixer bowl and whip on high speed until stiff peaks form. Serve slices of the cheesecake with the whipped cream, if desired.

“When You Live In Florida” (Part 1)

A few years ago, my wife and I moved into a retirement development on Florida's southeast coast. We are living in the "Delray/ Boca/Boynton Golf, Spa, Bath and Tennis Club on Lake

Fake-a-Hachee". There are 3,000 lakes in Florida; only three are real. Our biggest retirement concern was time management. What were we going to do all day? No longer. Let me assure you,

passing the time is not a problem. Our days are eaten up by simple, daily activities. Just getting out of our car takes 15 minutes. Trying to find where we parked takes 20 minutes. It takes a half-hour in the check-out line in Wal-Mart, and 1 hour to return the item the next day. Let me take you through a typical day: We get up at 5:00 am, have a quick breakfast and join the early morning Walk-and-Fart Club. There are about 30 of us, and rain or shine, we walk around the streets, all talking at once. Every development has some late risers who stay in bed until 6:00 am. After a nimble walk, avoiding irate drivers out to make us road kill, we go back home, shower and change for the next activity. My wife goes directly to the pool for her underwater Pilates class, followed by gasping for breath and CPR. I put on my 'Ask me about my Grandchildren' T-shirt, my plaid mid-calf shorts, my white socks and sandals and go to the clubhouse lobby for a nice nap. Before we know it, it's time for lunch. We go to Costco to partake of the many tasty samples dispensed by ladies in white hair nets. All free! After a filling lunch, if we don't have any doctor appointments, we might go to the flea market to see if any new white belts have come in or to buy a Rolex watch for $2.00. We're usually back home by 2:00 pm to get ready for dinner. People start lining up for the early bird about 3:00 pm, but we get there by 3:45 because we're late eaters. The dinners are very popular because of the large portions they serve. We can take home enough food for the next day's lunch and dinner, including extra bread, crackers, packets of mustard, relish, ketchup and Splenda, along with mints. At 5:30 pm we're home, ready to watch the 6 o'clock news. By 6:30 pm we're fast asleep. Then we get up and make five or six trips to the bathroom during the night, and it's time to get up and start a new day all over again.
