Sometimes in life, you have to hit rock

bottom before you can get up and start to

make the changes you need to and

    thats what happened to me.

I had heart problems and four years

ago suffered a mental breakdown a knock-on effect

of my obesity which cost me my career, my 14-year

marriage and very nearly my life. In January 2007,

when my wife and I finally separated, I was the big-gest Id ever been and to be honest, a bit of a mess.I knew I needed to lose weight, and joined Slimming

World. Its the best thing I ever did.

Straight away, I got an amazing welcome and a

great sense of belonging plus the help I got from my

local Consultant. The sense of motivation was incred-

ible and its changed my whole outlook on life.

My depression and anxiety have almost completely

disappeared and Ive regained the confidence I needto get back to work I feel as though the worlds my

oyster! In just 15 weeks, Ive lost nearly 4 stones and

8 inches off my waist. Ray Lenton

    Raymond discovered Slimming World

    and rediscovered himself

Cheshires Junior Recycling Ofcer of the Year is

Beth Livesey from Woodfall Primary School, Little

    Neston.

Beth was presented with a trophy and a newbicycle.

One of the judges, Executive Member for Highways

    and Transportation Eveleigh Moore-Dutton said:

All the nalists gave excellent presentations

demonstrating the imaginative projects they had run

to raise awareness of recycling at their schools over

    the past year.

All the entries were of such a high quality and

    each one was unique.

In the end Beth was the clear winner and I hopethat she enjoys her new bicycle.

The nalists, all Year Six pupils, prepared displays

showing the many creative projects they had run in

the last year in their role as Junior Recycling Ofcer.

This included: recycling collections for spectacles,

batteries, and paper; composting fruit and vegetable

waste and even using school made compost for

    growing their own food.

    Beth receives her trophy from

    County Councillor Eveleigh

    Moore-Dutton.

Recycling brings cycling bliss for Beth

l With regard to Mrs Thompson's letter,

I would have thought that 610 was a fair

number of objections to any scheme -

one can never assume, of course, that,

if people didn't object then they must be

in favour. Not so - it's just as likely that

they thought that no-one would take any

notice!! But, of course, there were others

    - perhaps Mrs Thompson needed to have

done her homework better. For example,

there were the 2000 or thereabouts

who signed a petition saying "no" not

to mention that when folk looked at the

exhibition only 100 of the 1000 that wrote

comments thought that it was a good idea

which means that 90% didn't think that it

was a good thing - I know that because I

    counted them on the report.

And, of course, it was all something

of a waste of time - public meetings or

no public meetings - because one gets

the impression that the Ellesmere Port

Councillors seem to think that they, who

don't even live in Neston, totally ignoredanything that anyone in Neston said and

that they knew better than the people who

    live here.

I hear that the Council meeting that

was at the Civic Hall was mayhem as

people weren't listened to and the same

thing could be said for the planning

    meeting.

So why was there not a referendum

of the people in Neston to nd out whatpeople really thought - I don't think

that we were ever actually asked for

our opinion!! Maybe one could run a

parallel with Gordon Brown not having

a referendum about Europe - there are

denite opinions that this country would

say no like the Irish did so we don't get

asked. It strikes me that this is very

    similar!!!!

    M A SheppardLittle Neston

l I have just picked up a copy of Neston

Local and found inside a rather biasedview of the proposed Neston supermarket

    - only letters of support - when opposition

to this proposal far exceed support,

despite what one of the letters indicate.

Does the other supporter want to relocate

the High Street shops - she is obviously

oblivious to the historic value of the street

not to mention what happens to the High

    Street - why?

In brief, a larger supermarket is required(but one of the two existing supermarkets

could have been extended), the proposed

site is not suitable - requiring boring

into natural sandstone and loss of

many parking spaces serving the High

    Street shops/businesses which will most

certainly not benet by this supermarket

    - this is a historic town and should be

    developed in a sympathetic manner.

Introducing a scheme to bring more trafcto the centre is madness - the narrow

roads could not cope making the whole

    proposal environmentally unfriendly!

    Change is coming

While camping in Cornwall this monthI was lulled into a false scene of

    security.

Everything was warm lush and more

spring like than summery. Ok we

didnt see much of the sun and the

sea was Baltic once you were ankle

deep but working outside every day

    you notice the difference instinctively.

But back home there is a real feeling

of the approaching autumn, thepumpkins growing under their huge

leaves have broken out of their rows

    and developed into medicine balls.

Ive tripped over one or two whoppers

    already!

I look forward to the change though

as the light and temperature changes

    plant hormones respond sending

messages through the plant tocomplete the fruiting and ripening

    process.

I have another event to look forward

to in the near future. Ive gone a bit

Jamie Oliver and adopted a ock of 20

ex-battery hens. With luck and tender

loving care they will soon be basking

in autumn sunlight. They wont care

    about the changing seasons because

What better way to celebrate 50

    average?

    Head teacher Steven Dool said:

I am delighted to congratulate our

    students on achieving outstanding

    and record-breaking results this year.

This has been aided by studentsbeing encouraged to challenge

    themselves to achieve aspirational

targets and going on to do so. Team

GB has done outstandingly well in the

    Olympics and Team Neston (made

up of students, parents and teachers)

    has done likewise locally!

Most students will enrol in the 6th form at Neston High School where they will be able

to choose from a wide variety of courses and will be joined by other students from

across the area.Top performers this year include: Melissa Sherlock (7A*3A), Martha Broughton

    Neston High School is celebrating

another year of best ever A Level results.

With a 100% pass rate and record

    Headteacher, Steven Dool said: Most

pleasing about this years performanceare those students who have achieved

    beyond their statistically predicted

    grades.

We, at Neston, believe that it is

important for students to be aspirational

in setting targets for themselves and

students have clearly risen to this

    challenge.

I should like to congratulate the

students on their success, to thank

parents for their continued support and

    Ness Botantic Gardens has followed

    the lead of Britains Olympians

by earning a gold medal for

its Garden for Bees at the Tatton

    RHS Flower Show.

    The garden, which has been

    created by Ness Gardens

    Curator, Paul Cook, was one

    of seven gardens awarded a

prestigious gold medal on the 10th

anniversary of the top gardening show

    at Tatton Park.

The exhibit was put together as part of

the organisations research into the bee

population on the Wirral and features

an array of plants that attract bees, a

    traditional bee dwelling and wooden

framed bee hives, along with an array of

    wild owers and fruit and

    vegetables that rely on

    bee pollination forfertilisation.

    Ness Botantic

    Gardens is

    nationally and

    internationally

    renowned

    and is

    currently one

    of Cheshires

the Year at the Mersey Partnership and

Visit Chester & Cheshire Annual Tourism

    Awards 2008.

Curator Paul said: A Garden for

Bees has been designed to show the

    important contribution that bees make

to our gardens and how everyonecan do their bit to support bee

    conservation in their own gardens.

    The garden contains man-made and

natural shelter for bees and keepers,

with the hard material coming from Ness

Gardens and all plants having been

    selected for their nectar/pollen qualities.

    He added: Myself and

    everyone involved in the

    project are thrilled to

    have won gold at

    the Tatton RHS

    and we hope

    that this top

Invest in your pet2008 will go down as the Year of the

credit crunch! Dont we all know it!

Trouble is theres usually so little we

can do about it but grin and bear it. Wesee it too in our vet clinics. We know

its often difcult for owners to be able

to afford the important treatment their

pets may require. We also know all too

well that ination means its ever more

expensive to provide them. And we

know that those owners who have had

the foresight to invest in Pet Health

Insurance are in the best position of

all! Having such a policy, paid and upto date, usually means that when Fido

needs some treatment, you can just

tell the vet to get on with it, knowing

that the costs will largely be covered. It

also takes away those horrid decisions

as to which treatment options should

be used. When cash is short, it can

make it very difcult. With insurance in

place, you can usually just go for the

best clinical option. But which insurance? There are

so many! This is no sales spiel, but

before you jump into the rst cheapest

policy you can nd, read the small

print, consider the restrictions, and ask

your vets practice for their view. After

all, when you come to make a claim,

you need the vet to complete the claim

A talented artist is a picture of success

after winning a series of awards since

setting up a studio at the 1million Atelier

    development, based at Burton ManorCollege.

Barbara Singleton, who will graduate in

Fine Art from the University of Chester in

November, believes her workshop at the

development has provided her with the

perfect setting in which to work.

Funded by the University and the

    Northwest Regional Development Agencys

    Rural Recovery Fund, Atelier provides

arts and crafts studios in picturesquesurroundings to new artists.

Since moving into Atelier, Barbara has won

a number of awards from local art groups.

She also showcases her art regularly atexhibitions in Cheshire and Wirral, and is

preparing for an event dedicated solely

to her work at the Atelier Gallery later this

    month.

Barbara said: It is only now that I realise

that this is what Ive always wanted to do

as a career. Winning prizes isnt really

what matters to me, but the awards are

testimony to the skills and techniques I was

able to develop studying at the University.

My degree has given me the condence

to paint in the way that I have always

wanted, and Ive also become interested

in sculpture and photography. The degree

also helped me in terms of marketing and

other aspects of making a career as an

    artist.

Atelier is just a fantastic environment for

any artist to work in, and the staff here are

    amazing.

Atelier, which was launched earlier this

year, is dedicated to promoting local artists

Picture of success at Burton Manorand participation in arts and crafts.

    On-site artists receive business and

    administrative support, and access to

a dedicated Business Centre, whichincorporates an IT suite and other

    support required by start-up companies.

Atelier also provides a range of

    activities for the local community.

There are classes and short courses

    which encourage visitors to explore

    their creative potential, while lectures

are offered by artisans related to their

    expertise.

Schools are also invited to arrangeactivities and workshops to increase

    young peoples awareness of traditional

crafts, contemporary ne art and digital

    and creative industries, while the

    refurbished Manor Gatehouse houses

    the Atelier gallery, hosting exhibitions

of original art, craft and design work

    produced on site.
