CzarJeff Laban, Lay-out Artist ng Sambayanan Newsletter.

    Lorenzo Ruiz, the

    first Filipino saint,

    was beatified on Febru-

ary 18, 1981 at the Luneta, and subsequently canonized in Rome on October

18, 1987. His feast day falls on September 28, tomorrow.

He was a devotee to the Blessed Virgin having been a confrade of the Confra-

ternity of the Holy Rosary. He encountered heroic death at the hands of the

harsh Japanese military "shoguns." Prior to his death, he was mercilessly tor-

    tured .

Lorenzo Ruiz terrible sufferings exemplify heroic faith and loyalty to God at

    the cost of dear life.

Nowadays there are virtually no more tortures and persecutions for ones faith. The "tortures" and spiri-

tual deaths one may encounter are the daily trials and crosses.Such may be the drudgery of work, loneliness or putting up with heartless, apathetic people among rela-

tives, coworkers, and coping with lingering illness, like arthritis, or an incurable sickness like cancer.

We pray to our first Filipino saint on his feast day to bless our country in order to achieve peace and unity

so we can surmount our socioeconomic problems.

Further, we pray to St. Lorenzo Ruiz for ourselves that we may bear the crosses and trials we encounter

daily. Especially here in South Korea.

THE NEWLY ELECTED MSP Father Moderator, Rev. Fr. Alfie AfricaMSP, arrived here in Seoul, Korea last Tuesday Sep. 22, 2009 all

the way from his last stop in Japan. He was met at the airport by Fr.

    Alvin Parantar, MSP.

He started his missionary life from a bush mission in Papua New

Guinea, to a Missionary Spirituality Formation work in Tayud, Cebu,

and to a First World Mission in Sacramento, USA before being cho-

sen and elected to his present post as Father Moderator of MSP.

He shares the same feeling of migrants by being a missionary. He

once quoted in the MSP newsletter, We, missionaries, will always

have to deal with the reality of leaving and coming. But not all good-

    byes are forever.

    Sunday: Cycle B 2009 SEP-OCT Weekday: Year 1

Magkagayon man,

    pamento.

    Nahihiwalay man

    ang mga kapatid natin

    sa malaking pangkala-

    hatan tulad ng Simba-

    han, huwag nating ka-

    limutan na makapan-

    gyarihan pa rin ang Di-

    yos at sagana kung

    siyay magbiyaya. Hindi

    siya nagtatangi hindi

    tulad ng tao na pumipili

    lamang ng iaanib sa

    samahan o kapatiran.

Kapag Diyos ang kumilos, may kapangyarihan siyang iligtas ang

lahat.

katao. Magkagayon man, maliwanag ang hamon ni Jesus: Putulin

iyon! Dukutin iyon!

Personal Encounter with the ArtistPersonal Encounter with the ArtistPersonal Encounter with the ArtistPersonal Encounter with the Artist

By: Lyn Carpio It was on a Sunday afternoon, on the 20th of September in a small room at the Hyewhadong Fili-

pino Catholic Center where I had the chance to experience a brief but fruitful encounter with Ms. Gen

    Asenjo, an artist and professor.

The small room was filled with curious faces and yet very eager participants from the Sambayanan and

Sulyapinoy Newsletter. It was such a lovely afternoon, the weather agreed with the moods of each andeveryone present.

A petite lady stood in front and was introduced to everybody. She's younger looking than what

I expected. As she made her way to start the afternoon activity I was convinced that she had a lot to offer. And it was true. She was oozing with knowledge though she was a lady with petite physique. She carried

herself with confidence as she started talking in front of the much relaxed participants.

The knowledge she imparted had somehow cleared my bewildered mind. I knew it wasnt

enough but she opened a door for improvement. It may be a very short moment of encounter with her butshe truly gave all the best she could to help us enhance our writing skills. She left a very good impression

to all who participated in the said activity, including myself.

I admired her untiring effort for sharing her talent to her fellow Filipinos living far away from

home. The hectic schedules were not a hindrance to her initiative to disseminate valuable information. Her words of encouragement touched me from within. The active participation of all who attended was

evidence of her distinct charismatic approach on her field.

The way she moved and talked showed her side as an artist. Petite as she was, she captured my interesteverybodys interest. Ms. Gen,

you made me proud to be your kababayan.
