SOUTH AUSTRALIA - Postal History

Lot 430

C 1838 cross-written entire headed "Adelaide SA/October 31 1840" and signed "Robt Leake" to his brother Edward Leake at "Lewisham/near Campbelltown/Van Diemens Land" with a largely very fine strike of the undated double-circle 'POST OFFICE/[lion & crown]/ADELAIDE' h/s, very fine boxed 'SHIPLETTER/3DE3/1838' d/s of Hobart where rated "11" (4d inwards shipletter + 7d for delivery between 75 & 90 miles), light vertical fold. Ex Michael Blake. A very fine and very early postmarked letter from the Colony, which was founded only two years earlier. [Robert Rowland Leake was one of two sons of John Leake who settled in South Australia. John Leake was a prominent settler in Van Diemen's Land where he established the Italianate villa "Rosedale". Robert writes to his brother Edward - transcript included - "I have moved my flock to Coromandle village it is eight miles from Holdfast...you will want a weeks provisions...on first landing...walloughby (= wallaby) rugs...are excellent things in leaky huts...we have 22,000 sheep 2000 head of cattrle and 200 horses in the Colony..." He gives numerous instructions on what to bring, what is procurable in South Australia, and prices relative to in VDL]

Postal operations began on 10/4/1837. Very few pre-1840 letters survive in private hands. The sole postage rate was 1d regardless of destination or distance carried & this was paid to the ship's captain. Harry Lower's entire to London with a very fine strike sold for $5060 at our auction of 12/5/2007. An April 1838 entire from the Leake Correspondence - with a lesser strike of the handstamp - sold for $7187 at our auction of 27/7/2009.

C 1908 Shierlaw cover with 1d pair tied by Port Adelaide cds but endorsed "Officially Reg/Contains Coins", extraordinary combination of handstamps used to concoct a '1/2' tax marking, Postage Dues with Filled Base 2d & 4d strip of 3 affixed & initialled. Stunning & superb! Ex John Forrest. [In this period, we have seen very few officially registered items other than to Tattersalls in Hobart. The cover must have weighed between 1oz & 1½oz. The postage was therefore underpaid by 4d. The postage due was 4d x2 + 3d registration fee x2 = 1/2d]

WESTERN AUSTRALIA - Postal History

Lot 1025

C 1835 lengthy five-page entire headed "Fremantle 6th March 1835" & signed "W Nairn", to Hobart, no postmarks but rated "6" on arrival for a triple-rate incoming shipletter, docketed partly on the face "Major Nairn/Swan River/Recd P Ellen/March", the internal pages are very fine but the outer sheet is soiled & damaged along a heavy vertical filing crease (repaired with archival tape). A very early and rare inter-Colonial letter: Dr Cecil Walkley had only six inter-Colonial items in the pre-stamp period, the earliest being of 1845, a full decade later than this item.

Major William Nairn arrived at Sydney (NSW) in 1814 where he served until 1818. He later went to India with his Regiment but retired to Van Diemen's Land in 1832. Disgusted when an application for a land grant was refused, he moved to the Swan River Settlement where he was granted 8800 acres near York and later acquired a further 3300 acres on the Canning River. The addressee William Morgan Orr arrived at Hobart in 1825. As a merchant and shipping agent he amassed great wealth, partly from his whaling operations. In the letter Nairn begs for more time to pay an overdue debt and makes all the excuses he can think of: "...I have property here more than what is sufficient to answer all my engagements but a little time must be given to dispose of it..." Also included is a copy of an extract from "The Hobart Town Courier" of 27/3/1835 reporting the arrival of the schooner "Ellen", and that one of six convicts aboard had jumped ship.

Our sale of Dr Walkley's collection on 27/11/2010 was marred by the purchase by the Western Australian Museum of many of the early letters. This greatly reduced the number of such items in private hands and must of necessity enhance the value of those few remaining available to collectors.

LITERATUREMost of the books offered here are the best references on the various subjects covered. As a group, they represent an excellent basis for a serious library of Australian Colonies/States titles. The majority are in new or in as-new condition. The estimates are deliberately conservative: for those books that are in-print titles, the estimates are generally half the retail prices. The auction catalogues include some of the greatest collections ever formed of Australian Colonies material. Several of the catalogues are rarities in their own right.

L "The Revenue Stamps of South Australia" (2006) & "The Parcel Stamps of South Australia" (2008) both by Martin Walker; "Revenue & Railway Stamps of Tasmania" by Craig & Ingles (1978); and "Handbook of Victorian Revenue Stamps" by Bill Craig (1999). Prestige Philately retail $78. (4)
