Because of unpredictable weather, we will have Brown Bag luncheons for January and February. If Fairfax County Public Schools are closed due to weather, NVRC will be closed too.

Jennifer Edge, a social worker from the Fairfax Area Agency on Aging, will pre-sent a program on "Fall Prevention" at 1:00PM to 2:00PM on Wednesday, Janu-ary 4, 2012.
Jennifer works as coordinator for the Independent Living Program. The Independent Living Program is a free pro-
gram offered by the Fairfax Area Agency on Aging; the program promotes fall prevention through education, exercise to increase strength and balance, and home visits to look at safety improvements.

John Harper had surgery for his broken lumbar vertebrae early in November, and is now staying at Commonwealth Skilled Nursing Facility for his physical therapy. Good news! Mary Malzkuhn has returned to her home after getting excellent care at a facility for her physical therapy in Reston.
Gary Viall is in the middle of his two-month recovery from his successful prostate cancer surgery. He is getting better each day. The annual PSA test helps to detect early cancer for men above 40. Peggy Schmidt hopes that friends from Happy Hands would pay her mother, Elizabeth Allen a visit. Peggy can be contacted at [email protected] to make arrangements for visits with Elizabeth.
Annie Dickens is doing good, and staying with her son (Jimmie) in Linden, VA. She goes to physical therapy twice a week for shoulder. She misses Happy Hands, and wishes you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Her email address is [email protected].

Congratulations to LaVerne Jenkins for being chosen as our resident of the month for November 2011. LaVerne was born on September 26, 1918 in Caldwell County, NC. LaVerne married Ace Jen-kins in 1968. Ace passed away in 1973, and they didn’t have any children. However, LaVerne has a loving, caring and dedicated cousin (Lindy) whom she loves like a daughter. LaVerne has overcome many obstacles including being deaf. She attended and graduated from Gallaudet University. She was employed for many years as a clerk in a government accounting office. Her previous hobbies were collecting salt & pepper shakers, reading, quilting, and sewing. LaVerne is a wonderful, kind, gentle, loving, and caring person. Refreshing Mandarin Salad
6 cups torn lettuce or spinach
1 can (15 oz.) Mandarin oranges, drained
1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
1/3 cup oil
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1 Tbsp. honey Dijon mustard
1/3 cup walnut halves, toasted
Combine lettuce or spinach, oranges, and onion in salad bowl. Blend together oil, vinegar, and
mustard. Add nuts and toss dressing with salad just before serving.
