W E l C O m EA wise person once told me that there’s no point in complaining about aging. “Just do it well and gracefully,” they said.
Wise words indeed. The seniors I’ve observed who are the most graceful, and doing well, are often the ones who looked into the future, planned and were always thoughtful about their next move. They were also very aware of the services and opportunities available to them.
That’s why we’ve created this guide to help you become aware of the services and opportunities in Vancouver. The seniors segment of the population is growing, and as a result specialists and experts from health to finances are ready to cater to your very specific needs.
We hope it helps. A city depends on its elders for balance, perspective and guidance. May we all age well in Vancouver wisely and gracefully.

Office of new seniors advocate to open march 31Sandra Thomas | [email protected]
One of the biggest stories of interest to seniors last year had to be the appointment of a dedicated advocate by the provincial government in March 2014.
The new appointment was made under the Seniors Advocate Act of B.C., proclaimed law in February 2013, as part of the provincial government’s Seniors Action Plan. Sending a strong message to seniors across the province, newly appointed advocate Isobel Mackenzie wasted no time in creating a working document entitled The Journey Begins: Together we can do better, a 16-page report she hopes will improve life for older adults in B.C. It’s the first such appointment in Canada.
Under the act, Mackenzie can advocate on behalf of seniors on issues such as health and personal care, transportation, housing and income supports. To that end, Mackenzie’s office will monitor services to seniors, provide information and referrals, analyze systemic issues related to health and provide recommendations to governments and service providers. Mackenzie is scheduled to begin work in her new Victoria-based office March 31.
The executive director of the South Granville Seniors Centre is hopeful the advocate will benefit B.C.’s growing elderly population.
“Support for seniors is getting smaller and smaller,” said Clemencia Gomez. “I hope this seniors advocate will help us get more funding or at least better solutions.”
Mackenzie promises to protect her independence while representing seniors
outside of government influence. “I have seen first-hand the issues, the
challenges and the choices facing our seniors, their families and their caregivers,” Mackenzie said at a press conference following the announcement last year. “I have witnessed the profound desire of seniors to maintain their dignity and their independence. And on more than one occasion, I have been humbled by the reminder that seniors are individuals who have their own ideas about how they see themselves aging.”
Gomez hopes Mackenzie is aware of the vital role seniors centres play when it comes to helping older adults live healthy, dignified lives.
“Seniors centres are the preventative group,” said Gomez. “We’re the ones who help seniors stay healthy and independent through programs and lunches. The government should support seniors centres because they save them money.”
She added senior populations are rapidly growing in all communities and that need for support must be addressed.
“So the government should provide more funding,” said Gomez. “There have been cuts to so many programs like home support and community support.”
“Seniors centres are the preventative groups...who help seniors
stay healthy and independent” CLEMEnCIA GOMEz

According to a program coordinator with Vancouver Community College, the number of Baby Boomers and seniors continuing their education is growing.
“Some people are committed to lifelong learning,” said Jennifer Gossen, “but others are taking courses to keep their skills current within the industry they work.”
Gossen said while there are still many seniors pursuing hobbies, such as photography, how to use a computer or cooking, others are enrolled in programs such as graphic design and technical writing or taking management and leadership courses as a way to stay current.
“Many older adults attending courses today are still working,” said Gossen. “That’s the difference I’m seeing.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Roger Wong, clinical professor of geriatric medicine at the University of B.C., said continued learning is a great way for seniors to improve brain health, particularly if it’s a new exercise routine.
“I support the use of exercise programs for individual health as a way to maintain balance and for brain health,” said Wong. “It’s a way to increase the health of blood vessels to reduce the risk of stroke.”
Wong added continued learning is an activity that can improve a senior’s quality of life.
“As for the health benefits, as far as medical research goes there is no concrete evidence, but there is evidence the absence of continued learning can affect your quality of life,” said Wong, who served as president of the Canadian Geriatrics Society from 2011 to 2013.
Wong added it’s not just the act of learning that’s beneficial, but also the socialization that goes along with it.
“It gives seniors a sense of community and motivation to get out of the house,” said Wong. “It helps them stay connected.”
The Vancouver School Board’s Continuing Education program was recently integrated with Langara College. Visit langara.bc.ca/continuing-studies. Meanwhile Simon Fraser University offers courses for adults aged 55 and older through its continuing education program. Visit sfu.ca/continuing-studies. The University of B.C. offers Elder Scholar courses designed to meet the needs of retired and semi-retired adults, but are open to all older learners. Course formats include lectures, seminars, study groups and walking tours.
Additional learning opportunities for seniors include One Day @ UBC offered Saturdays at the UBC Point Grey campus. These single-day courses provide easy and affordable access to top experts in their field – and the small class size ensures ample opportunities for discussion. As well, for more than 30 years, UBC Continuing Studies has offered the Ageless Pursuits Summer Lecture Series, program featuring morning lectures on topics such as art, archaeology, literature, political science and history. Special rates apply for participants aged 55 or older.

You’re not alone if planning for retirement and life as a senior was not a priority as you finished school, travelled, raised a family and worked hard to make ends meet. But according to estate planning adviser Cindy David, no matter what your age, it’s still not too late to plan for your financial future.
“The time is right now for all ages,” advises David, president of Cindy David Financial. “Don’t feel bad because you waited to start planning, but the sooner you get started, the fewer surprises you’ll have along the way.”
David said the typical Canadian uses their twenties to accumulate and (hopefully) pay off debt and their thirties to begin making more money and start a family. David added many Canadians in their forties simply keep their heads down and continue to work hard. That’s the time, David said, many ask, “now that I have some money, where should I put it?”
As for retirement planning, David said it’s typical to see clients about five years prior to their actual retirement. She noted with Vancouver’s high cost of real estate, even homeowners with no mortgage can’t count on any equity should they decide to sell and stay in the city.
“Maybe their home is 40 years old and they want to sell it and move into a condo with new appliances and some space,” said David. “In Vancouver, that’s more of a sideways move and they’re not going to see any equity.”
David added a good place to begin finding solid financial advice often starts at an individual’s bank and evolves to an estate planner.
Seniors should also plan for their future when it comes to their health, and again, it’s rarely too late to start. According to the provincial government’s website SeniorsBC.ca, many seniors wish they’d started planning earlier. Those who start planning now can be assured they’ve done their best today for tomorrow and have the tools to make the most of later life, maintain health and independence, have greater control over decisions, have a positive retirement and reduce or avoid costs for health care and other services.
As well, advance care planning should be considered, which includes thinking about and writing down wishes or instructions for future health care treatment in the event a senior becomes incapable of deciding for themselves. Advance care planning gives seniors a voice and family or friends the knowledge and tools they may need to make decisions on their behalf.
In Vancouver, the 411 Seniors Centre offers free counselling on everything from income tax to housing, health to legal advice. Visit 411seniors.bc.ca and seniorsBC.ca for more information.

tools they may need.”

your ultimate to do listDavidicus Wong, M.D.
Life is ironic. We spend at least 12 years of our youth in
school, attending to lessons so that we can avoid mistakes on our tests. Then in the rest of our lives, the tests come first, we make mistakes and learn from them.
As children, our parents seem to change more than we do. When we are young children, our parents are cool and know everything. When we become teenagers, they are totally uncool and know nothing. When we become adults, they may not be cool but they’ve become wise.
When we are young, we have the energy and time to travel around the world and accomplish the things we’ve always wanted to do but not enough money. When we are parents, we have a little less energy and a little more money, but not enough time. And when we are old with enough money saved and plenty of time, we may no longer be able to travel (or afford the medical travel insurance).
When we are young, we have a list of ambitions – the things we wish to achieve in life. As we go about our lives, raise our families, juggle our relationships and attend to our work, we accumulate an ever growing to do list.
With age comes discernment. We learn what matters most and what deserves our attention. Though the list we bring to our doctors grows longer, our most important to do list is shorter.
What should be on your Ultimate To Do List in the senior years?
Express your positive feelings. The greatest
tragedy in life is that most of us die not knowing how we touched the lives of others and how much we were loved. Don’t miss an opportunity to express your love and gratitude to the most important people in your life.
Let go of everything that holds you back from being at peace with yourself and your life. This may mean letting go of the past, forgiving others and forgiving yourself.
Make clear decisions about what kind of medical care you would want if you couldn’t make decisions for yourself in the future. This may include the decision not to have CPR or life support. Discuss this with your loved ones and your family doctor.
Ensure that you have all the medical information that doctors would need in case you required urgent or emergency care. This would include your list of medications and a one-page summary of your medical history (allergies, family history, chronic conditions, operations and significant past illnesses).
If there’s one thing you’ve always wanted to do, why haven’t you done it yet?
Dr. Davidicus Wong is a family physician. For more on achieving your positive potential at
every age: davidicuswong.wordpress.com.
