The lunch ladies, who wish to remain anonymous, provide us students with adelicious and nutritious meal everyday. Some of the more popular meals theyprepare include country fried steak with mashed potatoes, shrimp poppers with apretzel, or french bread pizza and crispy loops.
when boys were being expelledfor having long hair. Girls wouldhave had to check their skirtlenghth. Anything above theknees would have gotten themexpelled also. Mr. Thomas valueshis experience as an educator. Hesays firmly, "IfI had to do itagain I would try to follow thesame path." Sophmore CarlRogers stated a commen fealingwhen he said "He will really bemissed."
Mr. Thomaslooks Back...Mr. Thomas has made thishis last year. He has beenworking in this schoolsystem for 36 years, 20 asthe principal. Starting as a7th and 8th grade P.E.teacher with his purplepersuader (a towelwrapped in tape, used ina kind of Duck DuckGoose Game.) in hand.Many of his then-studentsare now parents of MVHSstudents. He recalls beingthe basketball, baseballand track coach for the 7thand 8th grade teams. Oneof his most memorableexperiences is his 1967seventh grade basketballteam's record of 17-0. In1979, he came to the highschool as the assistantprincipal. He taughtEnglish and sponsored thestudent council.

Tom Earlywine began his teaching careerin Huntington County in English/Lit. He ranthe junior class play and published the schoolnewspaper too. He came to Mt. Vernon in1966 to teach Social Studies and coach Boy'sbasketball and track. He was athletic directorfor a while, although still teaching someclasses.
In '72, he went back to fulltime teachingand coaching, this time adding football to hisskills. 1980 saw him pick up girls basketball,which would eventually lead to some of hisproudest moments.
In the 1984-85 era, he started the girlssoftball program, still staying with footballand girls basketball.
"J had a lot of energy in those days, and Ienjoyed it," he said, adding, "Coaching isteaching."
When asked about the highlights ofteaching and coaching, he thought a long timeand finally said, "I've seen girls basketballplayers become doctors; I feel that [ lent littleto that however. Highlights would also be theteams advancing to semi-state and the girlsAllstars in 87-88."
