New Academic Structure - Initial Achievements
The NSS curriculum and the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination has been implemented smoothly since 2012. With the promising examination results and provision of all-rounded learning experiences, NSS students were able to further their studies or take up employment through multiple pathways.
The NSS Subject Information Survey 2012/13 shows: over 1,000 subject combinations at each SS level more diversified subject choices across Key Learning Areas (KLA): 69% of S4 students, 68% of S5 students and 58% of S6 students take elective subjects from two or three KLAs schools offer an average of 11 to 12 elective subjects
13
Broad, balanced and
a large variety of subject choices
Students can take the extended module in Mathematics and at most 4 elective subjects according to their interests, abilities and orientations
The eight UGC-funded institutions mentioned that most candidates admitted in the past 2 years have taken 2-3 elective subjects
nearly 100% of the candidates attained level 1 or above in at least one subject each gets a diploma with his/her performance and abilities demonstrated; no more “Pass” or “Fail”
nearly 70% of the candidates attained level 2 or above in five subjects (including Chinese Language and English Language), fulfilling the minimal entry requirement of sub-degree programmes and many civil service posts
over 30% of the candidates met the general entry requirement* of local bachelor’s degree programmes
14
Performance in HKDSE examination 2012 & 2013
*attain the level of 3322 in the four core subjects, plus level 2 or above in one or two elective subject(s)
About 90% of the candidates awarded ‘attained’ or above. It helps more students attain level 2 or above in the HKDSE Examination to pursue further studies and employment
It shows the importance of providing diversified
subject choices in the senior secondary curriculum

Parents’ encouragement and support are important : help children know themselves from their daily life,
understand their own aspirations, interests and potentials hold realistic expectations, helping them make suitable
plans to meet their own aspirations and goals based on their interests, abilities and other factors such as school ethos, subjects offered by the schools and study pathways, etc.
encourage, support , communicate with and listen to them change the traditional mindset that entering university is
the only way to success – having a proactive attitude, pursuing continuing education could also lead to success
maintain communication with the school teachers and counsellors
