Dear Student,
You have reached an important stage in your magnet experience here at CHS. It is time to begin
your Senior Project. I am often asked to explain the purpose of the Senior Project. I like to think
of it as a 4 year long time management assignment. The first 3 years you learn the skills
(research, writing, organization, presentation, and time management) and in your senior yearyou apply what you have learned. The Senior Project gives you the opportunity to choose an
area of study through which you will demonstrate the skills you have learned during your time
at CHS while learning something new.
During your junior year, you will select a topic and begin planning your project. Once you have
decided what you want to do, you will need to do some research to find out more about your
topic and what you might expect to learn in the process. You will also need to find a mentor to
guide you through the project. You will work with your mentor for twenty-five of the one
hundred hours required for the project. Your mentor will help you plan your experience using
the Proposal Packet. When your proposal has been approved, you will receive a Senior Project
Contract outlining your learning goals and specific requirements for your Senior Project. Senior
Project forms must be completed and returned to the coordinator, before you may begin work
on your project.
During your senior year you will present your progress on the Senior Project in four
presentations. You must also create a portfolio of your progress, as well as meet any
requirements stated in your contract. The portfolio is where you will keep the evidence of your
project. Your portfolio will be evaluated at each of the presentations. You will also write an
argumentative paper dealing with a controversial issue related to your field of study. This paper
is in MLA format and must be a minimum of 5 pages long.
The final stage of the Senior Project occurs during the spring semester (usually in April). It is at
this time you will present your final phase to members of the faculty and community at our
Senior Project Boards Night Presentation. In this presentation you will demonstrate to the
judges what you have accomplished in your area of study as well as demonstrate the skills
acquired through four years of study in the magnet program at CHS.
Although the task before you may seem overwhelming be assured that with planning,
dedication, time management and hard work, you will achieve success! You will be able to look
back on your project with a sense of pride in your accomplishments and yourself. I wish you an
enjoyable and memorable senior year.
Sincerely,
Mandy Sayama
Senior Project Coordinator

Senior Project
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do we have to do a senior project?y Think of it as a 4 year long time management assignment. The first 3 years you learn the
skills (research, writing, organization, presentation, and time management) and in your
senior year you apply what you have learned.
y CHS is certified by the Senior Project Center.o Colleges & Universities know that a certified project meets certain criteria.
Therefore admissions officers understand the effort you have put into your
senior project, as opposed to one that is not certified.
y Your Senior Project should help you get accepted into the college of your dreams and
impress the scholarship committees.
o If you choose a topic that showcases your talents or helps to prepare you foryour major, you will be able to really talk yourself up in your essays and
interviews.
y This year we are encouraging you to choose a topic that has a service component.
o Service is the HOT TOPIC for colleges, universities, and scholarship committees.
They are looking for well-rounded students who have not only excelled in
academics, but also have found the time to reach out and help others.
o As competition for scholarships and admissions increases, you will be able to
make yourself shine above the other applicants by choosing a project with a
service component.
o
Giving back to your community will not only help others, it will help prepare youfor your future.
What are the requirements of the Senior Project?y At the beginning of your junior year, you will choose a topic and begin looking for a
mentor in that field.
y At the beginning of your junior year, you will complete the Proposal Packet and submit
it to the Senior Project Committee.
y If your proposal is approved, you will receive your contract in the spring.
y Your contract will explain what is required for your specific topic.
y During the summer between your junior and senior year, you are strongly encouragedto work on your senior project with your mentor.
o By the end of your project, you must complete at least 100 hours.
o 25 of those hours must be with a mentor.
y During your senior year, you will present your progress on the Senior Project in four
presentations or phases. Each phase is made up of three grades; your presentation
grade, your portfolio grade, and your product/performance grade.
o Expect to present phase 1 beginning August 22, 2011.
8/6/2019 Senior Project Handbook 11-12
6/117
6
o Phase 2 will begin October 17, 2011.
o Phase 3 will be presented January 9, 2012.
o Phase 4 will begin March 5, 2012.
y You will also write an argumentative paper dealing with a controversial issue in your
field of study. This paper, written in phase 2, must be in MLA format and must be a
minimum of 5 pages long.y You must also create a portfolio of your progress, as well as meet any requirements
stated in your contract.
y Spring term (usually in April) you will present your final phase to members of the faculty
and community at our Senior Project Boards night Presentation.
What is the easiest topic?y The easiest topic is a topic in which you are truly interested. Choosing a topic because
someone else thought it was easy usually does not work out to be the easiest one for
you.
y If your topic is not something that interests you, it will seem like work or a chore.
y However, if you choose something that interests you, the time seems to fly.
I have no idea what I should do. Where do I begin?y Please stop by and speak with our Senior Project Coordinator in room 316.
y She will work with you in selecting the topic that will be the best one for you.
How much does it cost?y Cost depends on the topic you choose.
y We STRONGLY encourage you to choose a topic with minimal costs.y You MUST discuss this aspect of your topic with your parents/guardians.
How do I find a mentor?y Find someone in our community who works as a professional or semi-professional in the
field you want to study. Contact them, explain the program, and ask if they will serve as
your mentor.
y Look for classes in the community that are offered in the subject you are doing. Many
times the teachers of those classes will agree to serve as your mentor.
y Network! Have your parents to ask their friends and coworkers if they know of someonewho might serve as your mentor.
y Ask a senior who is currently studying that topic.
y Mentors must be over 21 years old.
y You may not choose a relative.

What are some possible topics?
The sky is the limit! A Senior Project should not be a canned topic that is generic to all. It should
be unique to you. Also, remember that it is ALWAYS a great idea to incorporate some sort of
community service into your project because that is what colleges are looking for. The following
is a list of topics that have been successful for seniors in the past. If your topic is not listed
below, please see Mrs. Sayama in room 316 to make sure it is an acceptable topic BEFORE the
proposal deadline.

y You must list the times for each entry, not the hours. Ex: 5:00 6:00 not 1hr.
y Your learning log should be placed in the portfolio behind the corresponding calendar.
What do I record on the Senior Project Calendar?y The calendar is where you record your hours for each month and keep track of total individual hours
and mentor hours.
y Calendars must be completed, signed and present in the portfolio at each phase. (Please see the
sample Senior Project Calendar that follows.)
What counts as hours for my project?y Any time that you spend directly working on your project or practicing skills related to the project.
y Any time that you spend working with your mentor on your project.
y Time spent working on your argumentative essay.
y Any recitals or performances that you participate in for your project.
y You may count no more than 10 hours for paperwork. This includes the research paper, working on
your portfolio, getting signatures and other paperwork.
y YOU MAY NOT COUNT THE FOLLOWING:
o Watching TV or online videoso Playing video games
o Listening to music on your iPod or on the radio
o Going to a concert
y If you are unsure if the hours will count you should clear it with your humanities teacher or the
Senior Project Coordinator.
o This is very important for students working on the project in the summer.
o If you are not sure, please email the Senior Project Coordinator. [email protected]
