2017 SERVICE HIGHLIGHTS:
Hansen Family Hospital hosted “Working Upstream to Conquer the Opioid Crisis” in August on 2017. The free class and group discussion was offered in participation with the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative’s (IHC)
Opioid Guardianship Quality Improvement Project. The discussion led to other community education presentations throughout Hardin County. Hansen Family Hospital was the first hospital in Iowa to present the IHC program.
The Accelerated Sleep Program at Hansen Family Hospital has achieved accreditation status by Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC). Achieving accreditation is a process where healthcare organizations
demonstrate compliance with national standards. Accreditation by ACHC reflects an organization’s dedication and commitment to meeting standards that facilitate a higher level of performance and patient care.
“LifeScan” is a vascular screening program launched through the Hansen Family Hospital Imaging Services department in October of 2017. The goal of this
program is to provide alternative preventive health & wellness opportunities for our patients and share the awareness of other preventive services.

Q & A with New Program Director, Jen Smith, LMSW
Q: Can you give us a little
background about the Senior Life Solutions program?
Hansen Family Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions in Iowa Falls is an intensive outpatient program designed to meet the needs of seniors in our community over the age of 65 struggling with issues such as depression or anxiety that can sometimes be related to aging.
Q: What can a participant
in the program expect when starting the program?
Participants can expect a confidential, comprehensive assessment, group and individual therapy, family therapy, medication education and management, and after-care planning where we continue to engage and support our participants. Even though this is a group setting, each person is addressed individually based on their unique needs.
At Senior Life Solutions, typically 7-10 group members receive group therapy to help work towards an improved quality of life focusing on mental health and overall well-being. By interacting with other members and receiving feedback from the group and the therapist, each member of the group gains a greater understanding of him or herself and has the opportunity to create relationships with other people who may be facing
similar challenges. During group therapy, the group may engage in open conversation guided by the therapist, which allows the group to support each other and share common experiences. Often in group therapy, participants learn new skills to support their mental health wellness for the remainder
of their lives.
Q: How have you witnessed the program making a difference in a person’s life?
We are a new program to Hansen Family Hospital in Iowa Falls; however, our team spent a week at a seasoned program at Van Diest Medical Center Senior
Life Solutions. We witnessed participants who have blossomed in their ability to make changes in their lives by letting go of past events and moving forward from dwelling on the negative that can happen. They’re regaining their quality of life.
Q: Do you have any
suggestions for someone whose loved one might benefit from the program? How could they start that conversation?
First, loved ones need to approach the conversation with compassion and empathy for what the senior is experiencing with a supportive and non-judgmental tone and verbiage. Helping your loved one understand they are not alone in the challenges they are experiencing. Encourage them to be open to learn about Senior Life Solutions and how this program can provide a new outlook on life and provide future natural support systems
Senior Life Solutions
with their peers. Offer to assist them with arranging an informational meeting with the Hansen Family Hospital Senior Life Solutions Program Director (Jen Smith, LMSW) to see if they would be eligible for the program. Anyone can make a referral to the program including family members, physicians, and other health professionals.
Q: Once in the program, what kind of
commitment is expected? Following an individual assessment,
participants meet three times per week in a supportive, encouraging group setting.
Q: What else would you like our community to know about Senior Life Solutions?
We are committed to providing excellent care and being invested in our community. We are always available to answer questions and to provide educational in-services and information to community members. We also educate other healthcare professionals about mental health wellness and the specific challenges of aging.
Jen Smith, LMSW
The Hansen Family Hospital Foundation hosted its annual gala at Highland Golf Club on Saturday, No-vember 11. The evening’s program paid special tribute to the hospital’s volunteers. The following is an ex-cerpt of the gala’s volunteer tribute:
In 1902, the hospital opened in Iowa Falls. Throughout the years, volunteers conducted fundraisers and local citizens donated what they could to the hospital including handmade bandages, fruit, vegetables, and even chickens.
In the 1960s, organized volunteers known as the Women’s Guild wore cherry red pinafores while working in the hospital, sewed draperies and bibs, purchased high chairs for the nursery, awarded health career scholarships, started a candy striper program, and served as hostesses for community events. In 1978, the organization’s name changed to the Auxiliary as it continued its support of the hospital.
In 2001, the Foundation formed to receive major gifts on behalf of the hospital. In 2015, the Hansen Family Hospital Foundation adopted the Auxiliary as a committee to coordinate fundraising and volunteer efforts.
Over the years, these volunteers have all served as ambassadors for health care. It is that role we need now more than ever. We recognize, as before, it will take many hands to educate about our hospital’s services and advocate for local healthcare, to assist with fundraising, and to support the
Hansen Family Hospital mission “to inspire wellness and provide compassionate healthcare.” The role of ambassador—for wellness, for local healthcare—is crucial to bringing the community together and supporting the legacy of Hansen Family Hospital.
To honor hospital volunteers over the years and in recognition of the history of selfless giving, the Foundation now recognizes annual healthcare education scholarships awarded to Hardin County students as Auxiliary Legacy Scholarships. Additionally, a commemorative sculpture now sits near the chapel of the hospital and is dedicated to the legacy of the Hansen Family Hospital Auxiliary. The sculpture is the work of Hardin County metal artist Larry Pearson. Pearson, who lives and works in Radcliffe, Iowa, fabricated the sculpture to represent the generations of volunteers who gave from their hands and their hearts to support health care services in the community.
