Coach Brown is in his 13th year coaching basketball at Charlotte Christian School, including one year as a co-head coach and nine years as the varsity men’s head coach. In addition to his coaching duties he serves as the upper school assistant principal for student life. He has tallied an overall head coaching record of 295-85 in 12 years, leading the Knights to 12 North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) Tournament appearances, including one state championship title and three runner-up appearances and eight Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) conference championships. During his head coaching tenure, Brown has recorded 11 straight winning seasons and 10 seasons with 20+ win records. Under Coach Brown’s leadership the Knights have been ranked in the USA Today High School Rankings as well as competed in the ESPN Rise High School national invitational tournament. Coach Brown gives God all the glory.
In 1996 Brown earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Clearwater Christian College in Clearwater, Fla. In 2005 he earned his M.Ed. in educational administration from Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Ga. While an undergrad, Brown was a four-year basketball letterwinner for Clearwater Christian and named to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) second team All-America as a junior and first team NCCAA All-America as a senior. He was also inducted into the Clearwater Christian College Hall of Fame. The Charleston, S.C. native is married to Allycia Brown, and they have a son, Terrelle, seventh grade, and a daughter, Morgan, fourth grade.
MEN’S VARSITY COACHES
Coach Boythe is in his fifth year coaching the varsity basketball team and is responsible for practice preparation, scouting and on-floor instruction. He is a member of Charlotte Christian’s class of 1998 where he played on the varsity basketball team and served as the student body president. He received a full scholarship to play college basketball at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has experience coaching at both the high school and the collegiate level. He is the Connect Pastor at The Gathering Church. He received his bachelor’s degree from UNC-Greensboro and a Master of Arts in theological studies from Reformed Theological Seminary. Coach Boythe and his wife, Melissa, have two sons: Andrew, kindergarten, and Elijah, four years old.

Coach Williams is in his seventh year serving as an assistant coach on the varsity basketball team and is responsible for scouting. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from UNC–Chapel Hill where he played JV basketball and was assistant coach of the JV basketball team for one season. He also received his master’s degree in the arts from the University of Texas. Coach Williams graduated from Charlotte Christian in 1999. Coach Williams and his wife, Kristin, have a daughter, Parker, who was born October 2011.

Assistant Coach Kelvin Upshaw is in his first season with the Knights. He is a former college and professional basketball player having played for the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks and the Boston Celtics. Mr. Upshaw has coaching experience in the NBA, CBA and with the Harlem Globetrotters. Mr. Upshaw has two children.

Coach Goodyear is in his third year serving as an assistant coach on the varsity basketball team. He attended school at Ferrum College where he played on the football and baseball teams. Coach Goodyear and his wife, Laura, have a three year old son, Knox, and a nine month old son, Hayes. Zach recently was named the TLC/Destination America’s Barbecue Pitmasters’ North Carolina Champion.

Coach Naeher is in her second season working with the varsity girls basketball program. For the Knights she has coached eighth grade girl’s volleyball for two years, middle school soccer for a year and a year as the varsity girl’s soccer coach. She also teaches physical education at Charlotte Christian. Coach Naeher is a member of the Charlotte Lady Eagles. She received her degree in Health and Physical Education from Messiah College. While an undergrad, Coach Naeher competed on both the basketball and soccer teams. She was named a three-time soccer all-American and a two-time NCAA Division III National Player of the Year in soccer.

Senior forward Chandler Goodson is in his second season of Knights’ basketball. He played JV basketball and football at Providence High School before coming to Charlotte Christian. He has received Magna Cum Laude honors, is a member of the National Honor Society and has been recognized as a Wofford Scholar, and a Furman Scholar. He is involved with Young Life, and the Health Careers Club. Chandler lists Chemistry as his favorite class.

He enjoys sleeping and playing video games.

Senior forward/center Gigi Bailey has played basketball at Charlotte Christian for seven years. She has received NCISAA all-state and CISAA all-conference honors for the past three years. Gigi has received Summa Cum Laude honors, is an AP Scholar and received a Scholastic Writing award. She is president of the Health Careers Club and is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society. Gigi lists Biology II as her favorite class and loves hanging out with friends, family and shopping in her spare time. She has signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball at Harvard University.
