The Spirit of Music … On The Move

At Somerset High School … R.W. Pineault, Principal

The spirit of music is alive at Somerset High School twelve months a

year. During the warm months of summer, our students can be found

fine tuning their musical skills at Marching Band Camp. During the fall

our music students get involved in the Bumper Sticker Drive. The

month of October is Musictown month……. indeed an active one

with the crowning of the Musictown King and Queen, Concert/Pops

Night, Field Shows and the Musictown Parade. During the month of

November, some of our most talented music students audition for

Senior District and Jr. District. As the weather turns colder and the

winds become chilly, warmth can be found in our auditorium in the

form of song and music…Holiday Vespers. Constantly in

motion…constantly practicing…constantly entertaining, our music

students provide a school spirit that can be heard, perceived, viewed,

and most important…appreciated.

It is that time of the school year when our music students present their

annual musical production. The talent, dedication and energy that our

music students put forward while maintaining their academic

achievements is to be commended. Under the direction Mr. Richard

Sylvia and Mr. Lennie Machado, “Side Show” has taken up residence on

the stage of Somerset High School and under the orchestral and

technical direction of Mr. David Marshall, the orchestra provides the

right tone and our behind-the-stage crews help to provide the correct

atmosphere for the performance.

The lights are about to be dimmed…the curtain is about to be raised.

I ask you to sit back…enjoy “Side Show”. The spirit of music and

song is about to engulf you…forever on the move…the music

students at Somerset High School.

Special Thanks Many people came forward to encourage and to help us get this show off

the ground. We offer them our heartfelt thanks and gratitude. Some, however deserve extra mention.

First and foremost we would like to thank our set designer, Mr. Glenn Ross. Without his time, labor, patience and experience, our wonderful set would not be a reality. Thanks Mr. Ross!

Secondly, a special thank Swan Dye and Printing as well as Bedford Fabric for donating much of the fabric used in our wonderful sets.

Also, much gratitude must be given to Kathy O’Brien and Paulette McKay for the purchasing, design and creation of many of our costumes. Additional thanks to Mrs. Ginny Troutman and Mr. Stephen Meehan for their help with the principal bios photography and set artwork. A special thanks to Mr. Samuel Adams for his donations of supplies and help in printing of all of our promotional materials.

The Cast, Crew and Staff of “Side Show” would also like to thank the supportive administration here at Somerset High School for their continued support and encouragement of this production and the entire list of musical endeavors that we undertake throughout the year. Without their support and guidance, musical performances such as today’s production would not be possible!

Finally, none of our musical ensembles would function as successfully as they do without the wonderful parent support here at Somerset High School. We are very thankful as a staff that they allow us to borrow their children “free of charge” day in and day out.

Thanks to all who helped us and shared in our success!

The Hilton sisters toured first in England at the age of three as "The

United Twins". Mary Hilton took them to a tour through Germany,

Australia and to the USA. In the true sideshow manner, their

performance was accompanied with an imaginative "history". Their

controllers kept all the money the

sisters earned. In 1926 Bob Hope

formed an act called the

“Dancemedians” with the Hilton Sisters,

who had a tap dancing routine.

When Mary died in Birmingham, Alabama, her daughter and her husband took over. They kept the twins from public view for a while and trained them in jazz music. They lived in a mansion in San Antonio, Texas until the early 1930s.

In 1931, the sisters gathered enough courage to sue their "managers", gaining $100,000 in damages and “independence”. They left the sideshows and went into vaudeville as "The Hilton Sisters' Revue". Daisy dyed her hair blonde and they began to wear different outfits so they could be told apart. As if to compensate for their deprived past, they had numerous affairs, failed attempts to get a marriage license and a couple of short marriages. In 1932, the twins appeared as themselves in the movie “Freaks”. In 1951 they starred in “Chained for Life”, an exploitation film loosely based on their lives. The Hiltons' last public appearance was at a drive-in movie theater in Charlotte, North Carolina. Their tour manager abandoned them there, and with no means of transportation or income, they were forced to take a job in a nearby grocery store. On January 4, 1969, after they failed to report to work, their boss called the police. The twins were found dead in their home due to the Hong Kong Flu. According to forensics, Daisy died first, with Violet dying perhaps 2-4 days later.

The Somerset High School Music Department wishes to dedicate our production of “Side Show” in memory of our friend Krystal. We are all better people for knowing you and hold the lessons we learned from our time with you in our hearts. We will always strive to be ourselves no matter what others say or do. We wish you were still with us performing on stage in this production, but we know that you are looking over us, cheering us on! This one’s for you Kriss!

The Real-Life Story of

Daisy and Violet Hilton Daisy and Violet Hilton (Feb. 5, 1908 – Jan. 4, 1969) were a pair of conjoined twins who toured in the U.S. sideshow and vaudeville circuit in the 1930s. The girls were born in Brighton, England (East Sussex) on February 5, 1908. Their mother was a single barmaid named Kate Skinner. The sisters were born joined by their hips and buttocks; they shared blood circulation and were fused at the pelvis but shared no major organs. Skinner's boss Mary Hilton, who helped in childbirth, apparently saw commercial prospects in them, and thus effectively bought them from their mother and took them under her care. The girls first stayed above the Queens Head in Brighton, but later moved to the Evening Star. According to the sisters' autobiography, Mary Hilton, her husband and daughter kept the twins in strict control with physical abuse; they had to call her "Auntie Lou" and her current husband "Sir". They trained the girls in singing and dancing.

A medical account of the birth and a description of the twins was provided for the British Medical Journal by Dr. James Augustus Rooth, the physician in charge at the time of their birth. He reports that subsequently the Sussex Medico-Chirurgical Society considered separation, but unanimously decided against it as it was believed that the operation would certainly lead to the death of at least one of the twins. He notes that these twins were the first to be born in the United Kingdom conjoined and to survive for more than a few weeks.

Plot Synopsis

“SIDE SHOW” was inspired by the lives of Daisy and Violet Hilton, stars of vaudeville during the Depression, who also appeared in the films Freaks and Chained for Life. The Boss introduces the exhibits in his sideshow, including his star attraction, the Siamese Twins.

Buddy Foster, an aspiring musician; brings Terry Connor, a talent Scout for the Orpheum Circuit, to see the Siamese Twins. Buddy thinks he could help them create an act and convinces Terry to meet them. The two men interrupt a party for the two girls.

After the Boss rudely refuses Terry’s offer to be cut in on the twins’ potential vaudeville career, Terry devises a scheme where Buddy will teach the girls a song. Jake, an African-American who plays the Cannibal King in the sideshow and is the twins’ friend and protector, begs them to consider what they’re getting into and the whole sideshow family adds its opinion.

Two weeks later, Terry returns to see the twins perform and Buddy tells him how the personal dynamics with the girls are getting sticky. Before their secret late-night performance, the twins confess to each other how infatuated they are with the two men who’ve come into their lives.

The Hilton Sisters’ secret debut is a great success, but the Boss discovers the subterfuge and physically threatens the twins when they tell him they are leaving the sideshow. Jake comes to their rescue and the other attractions threaten to leave also, causing the Boss to back down. Daisy, Violet and Jake, whom Terry has invited to help backstage on the twins’ tour, bid farewell to their sideshow family.

Before their vaudeville debut, the twins argue about their different ways of expressing interest in men. Onstage they sing “We Share Everything” in a production number featuring them as Queens of Egypt.

After the twins’ performing triumph, Terry and Buddy shower them with kisses. Hostile reporters ask tough questions about the girls’ love life. Terry and Buddy deny any romantic inclinations, leaving the twins to wonder if they will ever find romantic fulfillment.

Act II opens with the Hilton Sisters at the height of their success – a Follies style production number. Daisy’s dream of stardom has come true, but Violet seems no closer to her dream of finding a husband.

At a fancy New Year’s Eve party, Buddy tries to cheer up Violet and ends up proposing marriage. Afterwards, Terry imagines what it would be like to be alone with Daisy.

In an onstage number, Buddy, Violet and Daisy issue an upbeat invitation to their wedding. But backstage both Daisy and Buddy separately express doubts as to how the arrangement will work. Jake overhears Buddy and, in an effort to save Violet from seemingly imminent heartbreak, confesses that he has loved her for years.

The night before Violet and Buddy’s wedding as the grand finale of the Texas Centennial, Daisy is feeling left out. To appease her, Terry suggests going where they could be more-or-less alone together.

The big day arrives. Hawkers sell tickets and souvenirs. But in the dressing area, complications arise. Jake announces he is leaving. Buddy confesses he’s not strong enough to marry Violet. Daisy offers a solution that will ensure a movie contract dependent on the wedding publicity.

Terry cannot bring himself to publicly acknowledge what he feels for Daisy. She dismisses him and insists that Violet and Buddy go through with the ceremony, which will at least benefit everyone’s career. Left alone, the twins find solace in each other and acceptance of who they are and what they are doing.

SIDE SHOW Background Information

“Side Show” is a musical about Daisy and Violet Hilton, conjoined Twins who make a change from being a circus act to becoming famous stage performers in the 1930s. The show was written by Bill Russell (book and lyrics) and Henry Krieger (music). The show starred Alice Ripley as Violet and Emily Skinner as Daisy. It opened on Broadway on October 16, 1997, and ran for 91 performances at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Despite critical acclaim, the show closed on January 4, 1998. It was later nominated for four Tony Awards in 1998: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Musical Score & Best Actress in a Musical (Alice Ripley & Emily Skinner). Although “Side Show” won none of these awards, it was the first and only time that two actresses were co-nominated for Best Actress in a Musical as a team (if they had won, they would have won together) although in other shows, such as “Wicked”, two actresses from the same show were nominated in this category separately. At the Tony Awards ceremony, the two stars performed the show's most popular number, "I Will Never Leave You." The other show-stopping number was "Who Will Love Me As I Am?", the closing number of Act 1. Audiences loved the harmonious blend of Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner's voices so much that the two actresses successfully released two albums of duets (“Duets” and “Unsuspecting Hearts”) The show has had several successful regional productions throughout the country, and has attained a loyal "cult" following. One notable regional premiere was the 1999 Denver production by the Physically Handicapped Actors & Musical Artists League. While many were initially uncomfortable with the idea of disabled actors portraying "freaks," the production was ultimately well received and was presented with several awards including the Denver Mayor's Award for Excellence in the Arts.

Andrew DaCosta – Buddy Foster Andrew is so excited to perform as the role of Buddy Foster in this year’s production of “Side Show”. This is Andrew’s second year performing in a Somerset High School Production. He is a sophomore and looking forward to two more years participating in drama. Andrew would like to thank Mr. Sylvia for teaching him not to sing through his nose and giving him a good punch in the stomach to help him get the note out. He would also like to thank his family, friends, teachers, and fellow actors for the support that they have given him. Finally he would like to thank Lennie Machado because without him there would not be any movement on the stage and Mr. Marshall for his dedication to making sure that the pit band is ready to perform.

Thomas Patten – Jake

Tom is thrilled to be putting on his last musical at Somerset High School before it collapses. Tom’s been heavily involved in the music department for the past four years and has been involved in all the musicals taking on such roles as the Pharaoh (“Aida”), Roger (“Grease”), Diesel (“West Side Story”) and cannot wait to take on the role of Jake in “Side Show”. Apart from the musicals, Tom has also been a member of Somerset’s Show Choir “Electrify” for the past four years along with many other music groups. Tom would like to thank his parents for their constant support and his sisters Jen and Audrey for all their love and inspiration. He would also like to thank Mr. David M. Marshall, Mr. Richie Sylvia, and Mr. Lennie Machado for constantly pushing him to be the best he can be.

Christopher Crider-Plonka – The Boss Chris is extremely proud of being granted this role as a freshman. In the next three years, he plans on becoming more involved in the music department, but until then he does not have much to say about his experiences here, besides that so far, they have been extremely influential. His past roles have included “Lancelot” in the middle school’s production of the “Knights of the Rad Table” and “Judge Wise Old Man” in “The Big Bad Musical”. The Boss has proved to be his most difficult role and he has put every ounce of work into making this the best character he has ever played. He looks forward to this year’s production of “Side Show” as it is the first time he will ever get to act alongside more experienced upperclassmen. Chris would like to thank his entire family for being so supporting of his interests. His friends have also been extremely helpful in keeping up his confidence to do these sorts of things. Finally, he would like to thank Mr. Marshall, Mr. Sylvia, and Mr. Lennie Machado for being there to help him on stage and off. Here’s to a good high school career.

Sarah Mayer – Daisy Hilton Sarah is thrilled to be able to perform with a fantastic cast this year as Daisy Hilton. She has been involved with the music department throughout her high school career performing in “Grease” (Rizzo) and “West Side Story” (Gratziella). Sarah is also involved in Concert Choir, Treble Choir, Chorale, and Somerset’s Show Choir, “Electrify”! She hopes to study music education and become as inspirational as her two teachers, Mr. Sylvia & Mr. Marshall. She would also like to thank her director, Mr. Lennie Machado whose guidance has taught the cast so much. It would not be possible to put on such an amazing show without such amazing people. She would also like to thank her family and friends who have supported her in every way possible. She especially would like to thank her mother who first inspired her to enter the music department.

Lauren Valcourt – Violet Hilton Lauren is excited to have the opportunity to return to the stage in the role of Violet in this year’s production of “Side Show”. Aside from the musical production, Lauren is also involved in Concert Choir, Treble Choir, Show Choir, Chorale, and is a vocalist in Jazz Band. She would like to thank her amazing directors, who “kicked our butts into shape every week for this production – it shows!” The last four years in the Somerset Music Department have had a huge influence on Lauren’s life, and she is planning on attending Rhode Island College in the fall as a Music Education major, and she wouldn’t be doing that without the inspiration of Mr. R. “Patches” Sylvia and Mr. “D Money” Marshall. Lauren would especially like to thank her loving parents, who have always supported her every endeavor – no matter how big or small, her CK Crew, for teaching her how discipline and friendship can lead to huge victories, and her boyfriend of 3 years, Bentley, for teaching me that the greatest thing in life is to love and be loved in return. Here’s to a great production!

Michael Tremblay – Terry Connor Michael is honored to be given the opportunity to perform the role of Terry Connor in this year’s production of “Side Show”. In his senior year, this is Michael’s second time in which he has taken part in the high school’s drama production, and is excited to show everyone what he can do on-stage. Michael would like to thank Mr. Sylvia for helping him grow in his acting and musical abilities and for the time and effort he has put in to making this a great show. He would also like to thank his friends and family for all of their support, and of course, Lennie and Mr. Marshall.

Kevin,

Have a great show from down below.

Love,

Grammy & Grandpa

We resolve to say it all. We asked ourselves…

Is this more than we bargained for? Who would want to join this madness?

Who could proudly stand beside us? and now we realize…

We were meant to share each moment. So we invite everyone to…

Come hear how love speaks… and in the end, for all of your hard work and time spent

preparing each and every detail… You should be loved…and tonight, just look around you…

YOU ARE!

Break a Leg!!!

We are so incredibly proud of you all!

Mr. Marshall, Mr. Sylvia and Lennie
