SV Cyber Program Handbook

The Seneca Valley Cyber Program is a new way of looking at how we

offer learning to our students. The purpose of the Seneca Valley Cyber Program is

to offer students the educa on they need to prepare for life in the 21st century. It

provides students with opportuni es they may not have previously had through

their public educa on experience. Seneca Valley is proud to meet the needs and

wants of students and their parents in the same quality academic environment with

which stakeholders have become accustomed.

The staff of Seneca Valley is proud to offer various new offerings through the Cyber

Program combined with the tradi onal offerings of past years. The quality of educa-

on with which you are accustomed remains as high as ever, but the courses

are presented in a different way. No ma er which program a student chooses to

enroll in, successful comple on will result in a Seneca Valley diploma. Parents and

students can be assured that they are prepared for the next steps life has to offer.

Dear Students, Parents and/or Guardian(s),

As a new student or as a returning student, we welcome you to the SV Cyber Pro-

gram and to the many opportuni es available. We look forward to providing a

unique opportunity for your child to learn and grow as a student. Our cyber service

is built on the Compass Odyssey pla orm. The program’s lessons are interac ve and

geared toward the elementary learner. Each lesson in Compass has been hand se-

lected to align with the Seneca Valley Curriculum. The Cyber Program Team is look-

ing forward to working closely with your family as we provide meaningful and chal-

lenging learning ac vi es for your elementary student.

To ensure that your child’s experience with Seneca Valley Cyber Program is success-

ful we would like to introduce ourselves to you and provide you with informa on

Set a schedule for your child to complete each subject’s lesson and work (and

s ck to it!)

Record each score on your grade sheet for each subject as they are completed

Check your email frequently for cyber announcements and informa on from

the teacher

Steps for logging on/off:

1. Go to: h p://clo.svsd.net

2. Enter the provided Username: _______________________

and Password: ________________________

3. Select or type: SVC in the School Box for Seneca Valley Cyber

4. Course links are located inside your students “Backpack”

5. Double click the subject tle (ex: 4th—Math 1st 9wks)

6. Each lesson must be completed in order. The program will not allow the student to complete tasks out

of order. Ac vi es with a five digit number can be completed repeatedly for more prac ce.

7. Once the lesson has been completed the student will receive a overall score and a percentage grade.

8. To ensure the student’s work has saved, only use the round “x” to close the program.

Logging‐IntoCompass


GeneralInformation

As students complete each assignment, the Compass program will provide

the student with a point grade and a percentage grade. Keeping track of

your student’s progress in each subject is very important. Using the course

outline sheet, it is recommended that you record both the point grade and

percentage immediately a er comple ng each assignment.

In addi on to online assignments, students will be responsible for com-

ple ng a notebook for each subject area. The notebook will be turned in at

the mid-term and at the end of the 9-weeks. A notebook grade will be cal-

culated in with online content grades at the end of each 9-weeks.

Parents are required to provide an email address upon registra on. Com-

pass will send parents an email bi-weekly summarizing the students pro-

gress on the 9-week course. *The emailed report does not include the

notebook grade.

Have your child check the Communica on Center in the Compass Odyssey program frequently for updates

from their cyber teacher. Students may email the teacher directly through the Communica on Center re-

garding assignments and/or student course progress. Your cyber teacher has a Seneca Valley email address

which can be used to communicate with parents. Email addresses are listed on page 2 of the handbook.

If a student will be a cyber student during special areas at school, that student is responsible for logging hours

to meet the state requirements for that area. The cyber elementary teacher will provide the specials log so

that the student can record ac vi es in the special areas .

ElementaryStudentHandbook

Students and parents should addi onally be familiar with the contents of the student handbook for their as-

signed school (CVE, Evans City, Haine or Rowan). If you do not have a copy of your building’s handbook, the

cyber elementary teacher would be happy to provide one to you or you can obtain a copy by contac ng the

school office.

Computer and Network Use

There are computers available throughout the building for student use. All enrolled students have an account

on the networked system for file storage and so ware access. All student accounts are password protected.

These passwords are to be kept confiden al to protect unauthorized use.

Lab Rules and Regula ons

The labs are a privilege provided for the students to enhance the academic curriculum. Games that are not

specifically used in the curriculum are not allowed on the system. Individual files are not considered to be

personal property. These files may be accessed at any me by teachers, administrators, or the system man-

agers. Students are not permi ed access to other students’ files. Tampering with files, copying of copyright-

ed so ware, downloading or installing games, password tampering, accessing unauthorized directories or

removing equipment, or so ware will be considered the . Tampering with any hardware or equipment or

viola ng policies and/or guidelines governing the use of networks, Internet or so ware programs are also

considered offenses and will be dealt with according to the discipline policy. Violators may also be prosecut-

ed under applicable local, state or federal civil or criminal law.

Academic Dishonesty/Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as taking or imita ng the ideas, thoughts or language of another to represent them as

one’s original work. It is impera ve that all work submi ed by a student be representa ve of his/her own

ideas, thoughts and especially language capability. Therefore, plagiarism is strictly prohibited in all work per-

taining to school. A grade of “F” or zero will be awarded for any submi ed work which is found to be the

work of another (student, author, encyclopedia, internet, etc.) and subsequent offenses will be dealt with

accordingly.

If the ideas, thoughts, or language from another source must be used in the work being done, it is the stu-

dent’s responsibility to cite the informa on appropriately.

InternetPolicy

Internet Policy

All enrolled students have an account on the network system for file storage and so ware ac-

cess. Students and parents/guardians must agree to the district’s acceptable use policy in or-

der for the student to use the computer and their account. All passwords are to be kept confi-

den al and protected against unauthorized use.

Students’ files are not considered to be personal property and may be accessed at any me

by teachers, administrators, or the system managers. You are responsible for what appears in

your accounts and on media in your possession. Files brought to school must also follow the

district’s acceptable use policy.

The following are some examples of inappropriate behavior: tampering with files or pass-

words, accessing another student’s files, probing or circumven ng security systems, down-

loading and/or playing unauthorized games, downloading and/or viewing inappropriate mate-

rial, accessing unauthorized directories, and removing equipment or so ware. Likewise, chat

sites, blogs, social network sites, and electronic mail are not to be used to post personal, har-

assing, threatening, unwelcome, or inappropriate messages. Viola ons of the acceptable use

policies may result in loss of computer use privileges and other school disciplinary ac on. Vi-

olators may also be prosecuted under applicable local, state or federal civil or criminal law.



Dress Code (as per Seneca Valley Policy #221)

All students are expected to be appropriately dressed and to maintain personal hygiene. Shoes must be worn at all

mes throughout the building, except in the gymnasium locker room areas. Students are not permi ed to wear hats,

hoods, head gear or bandanas inside the building.

A student may not wear any apparel that reveals or exposes the midriff/lower back or sides of the upper body or torso,

and/or undergarments or is disrup ve to the educa onal process.

A student may not wear any apparel or jewelry that by words, signs, pictures or any combina on thereof, advocates or

promotes sexual ac vity or violence or the use of alcohol or drugs, or demeans or degrades another because of race,

sex, religious persuasion, na onal origin, or disability.

Bullying/Cyber Bullying (as per School Board Policy #249)

There is no place for bullying in Seneca Valley. Bullying is defined as an inten onal electronic, wri en, verbal or physi-

cal act, or a series of acts directed at another student that has the effect of doing any of the following:

1. Substan ally interfering with a student's educa on.

2. Crea ng a threatening environment.

3. Substan ally disrup ng the orderly opera on of the school.

Students who act as bullies will be disciplined according to the discipline code.

Responsibility of Student to Remain in Designated Areas

As a ma er of safety and welfare, students must report to and remain in areas assigned to them by their schedule. It is

especially important that students avoid areas that are “off limits”, such as the parking lots. Likewise, students are nev-

er to be off school property unless they have been appropriately dismissed by school authori es. Failure to follow

these guidelines will result in assignment of appropriate discipline. Students will be charged with class cu ng for being

out of their assigned areas.

All par cipants involved in athle cs are subject to school district and administra ve policies applying to use, possession

and distribu on of alcohol/drugs. All ac ons by students and the school district with respect to athle cs shall be gov-

erned by Seneca Valley Board Policies.

building’s Student Handbook is available on svsd.net and can be obtained by calling the Cyber Program office at 724-
