OUR STORYA beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies. Lonely Planet was born.
Today, Lonely Planet has offices in Melbourne, London and Oakland, with more than 600 staff and writers. We share Tony’s belief that ‘a great guidebook should do three things: inform, educate and amuse’.

AUTHOR THANKSHeartfelt thanks to Tasmin Waby, Julie Sheridan and Katie O’Connell whose wisdom and insights contributed so much to this book. Thanks also to my talented fellow Lonely Planet authors Kate Armstrong, Brett Atkinson, Carolyn Bain, Peter Dragicevich, Paul Harding, Miriam Raphael, Charles Rawlings-Way, Steve Waters and Meg Worby, without whom this book would never have been possible. And to countless locals who shared their passion for and expertise on this wonderful
corner of the earth. To Ron, Jan, Lisa, Greg, Alex, Greta, Damien, Ron, Elaine and all the Pumpas – you represent all that I love about this country. To Marina, Carlota and Valentina – os quiero and I can’t wait to revisit the road trips in this book with you.

OUR WRITER
ANTHONY HAMAnthony (www.anthonyham.com) was born in Melbourne, grew up in Sydney and spent much of his adult life travelling the world. He recently returned to Australia after ten years living in Madrid and brings to this guide more than fifteen years’ experience as a travel writer. As a recently returned expat, Anthony is loving the opportunity to rediscover his country and indulge his passion for the wilderness. He brings to the book the unique
perspective of knowing the land intimately and yet seeing it anew as if through the eyes of an outsider.
My Favourite Trip x Kimberley Crossing for the soulful and dramatic desert scenery, and the solitude of this beguiling corner of the country.
