SPB is a registered Student Vote school ( www.studentvote.ca), which is a parallel election for students under the voting age, coinciding with the federal election. The purpose is to provide young Canadians with an opportunity to experience the voting process firsthand and to build the habits of informed and engaged citizenship. As part of the process of becoming informed about the upcoming federal election on Oct. 19, our students are learning about the qualities of leadership. How do our political candidates convince us that they can lead our country? What are their party platforms? What values do their actions reflect? What do their own party members say about who they are as leaders? Building student leadership is an inherent aspect of the hidden curriculum – whether in humanities, environmental stewardship, physical education or through holistic lifestyle practices. Our country, our city, and our school require leaders who live and lead with integrity. The oldest students in our school will practice just that on Oct. 8 when they will make presentations to each classroom about the position of the national political parties. On Oct. 14 they will take on the role of deputy returning officers and polls clerks and cast ballots for the official election candidates, in the school library. Results from each participating school across the country will be tabulated nationally and by riding and will also be shared with media for broadcast and publication. JK Rowling, in her novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, writes, “It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must find to their own surprise that they wear it well.” Let us take up the mantle and set an example for our young ones, our emerging leaders. Let us speak about authentic and servant leadership at home, around the dinner table, and within the classroom. Moreover, let us assume our responsibility as Canadians and participate in an informed vote to elect the next leader of our country, the next Canadian prime minister – whether that be during the student vote on Oct. 14 th or on the federal election day on Oct. 19 th . The CBE has made a system wide shift in its waste management
requirements that follow a similar direction of the City of Calgary
waste management processes. SPB is already ahead in the race
towards creating a sustainable school environmental program, as
it is one of only 65 schools (out of 225) that is entering its fifth year
of sorting its garbage and collecting organic materials for correct
disposal. We are proud of this accomplishment and have invested
in nine Comprehensive Waste Stations (CWS) in main areas of the school that will
replace all former waste bins. There are five categories for correct waste management:
(i)Paper Shredding, (ii) Waste (iii) Recyclables, (iv) Refundables, and (v) Organics. We
request that all individuals who enter our school and create waste, use citizenship and
conscientiousness in correctly sorting it. Reduce the amount of waste you create!
Consider a garbage-free lunch!
Wind Energy at SPB!
Last school year students successfully raised $3792.00 in funds through bottle collections which will be used to source our school with wind energy for a one year period. Operating our school on wind energy requires students to bring one dollar worth of bottles (4 to 5 refundables) per month. This is a simple and easy equation: 552 students plus 4 to 5 bottles equals wind energy for one year! Join the cause!
During the week of Oct. 26-29 students will be requested to bring in 3 bottles from home (or more) to their classroom teacher. It will be our first Green Week of the school year (there will be a Green Week every month). We will launch the week with a major event to announce that Senator Patrick Burns has become the first school in Calgary, and Canada, to be run on wind electricity. Starting on November 1
st, SPB will begin
purchasing its electricity from Bullfrog Power, a company dedicated to generating emission free electricity. Bullfrog Power will generate all SPB electricity needs and put it in the electrical grid (through the regular CBE provider, Enmax) on behalf of our school. To celebrate this accomplishment, we are inviting numerable honourable guests to celebrate in the launch. More details to follow!
Healthy Hunger at SPB
On Thursday, October 1st
, we kicked off the Healthy Hunger Program at SPB. All food will
be served out of the cafeteria window, beginning with Gr. 6 at 11:40 am each Thursday.
Grades 7-9 will be reminded (by PA announcement) to come to the cafeteria to receive their
Healthy Hunger lunch during the regular lunch hour. In addition to Healthy Hunger items,
we will also be selling juice boxes for $1. These juice boxes will be separate from Healthy
Hunger orders. If students are absent, their lunches will be held for them until the following
day in the staffroom fridge. After Friday’s nutrition break, all leftover food will be given away.
To sign up for Healthy Hunger, parents will need to register online at
https://www.healthyhunger.ca. You can click on the tab in the middle of the page that says
“Parents”. You will have until 5 days prior to that week’s healthy hunger schedule to order.
This month’s vendors will include Extreme Pita, Opa, Quiznos, Edo, and Little Caesars,
respectively. We are currently seeking parent volunteers to help with the sales and
distribution of food during lunch. If you are available between 11:00-12:30 on Thursdays,
