"If you are not looking in the hidden job market, you're missing about 85 percent of the jobs that are out there right now because most of the jobs -- the far majority of jobs -- are in the hidden market,“ Debbie Kaylor said.

Donald Asher's Cracking The Hidden Job Market: How to Find Opportunity in Any Economy

[email protected] it easy to contact you!

Q:  Any additional words of wisdom?

A:  Depression and bitterness are real problems for the long-term unemployed, and we all need to do more to get these people back into the work force. For the long-term unemployed, I have two pieces of advice. First, you have to volunteer and exercise. Volunteering gets you out of the house, gives your life meaning again, and puts you in contact with really cool people, often well connected, who can help you out in ways you may not be able to predict (I'm talking about your fellow volunteers). Volunteering is proven to combat depression! Exercise works the same way. It combats depression, and makes you look and feel good, too. These are both free medicine for the long-term unemployed.

Secondly, take any position at all, and I do mean any position at all, and remain constantly on the market until you rebuild your career one step at a time. It might take you years to get back to where you belong, but if you sit on the sidelines for those years, you'll never get there. This strategy is not new, by the way.

60 Second Job Preparation60 Second Job Preparation

1 - Whether you are young or old, just be sharp, enthusiastic, energetic, happy.

2 - Get fit and trim.

3 - Collect potential questions and write out short answers – keep this forever.

4 - Make your resume simple, easy to read, replacing statements like, hardworking, 15 years experience, with objective statements that hit hard and prove your skills and abilities, using numbers and dollars.  If you want a job as a Tax Accountant, put those words in several places.  Put down accomplishments not job duties on the resume and remember you don't need your boss' approval for what you say.

5 - Put your resume on Monster and Careerbuilder and edit it daily, yes daily, so people will see that it's fresh.  Carefully word your title in Monster, something like Joe Green, Tax Account.

6 - Make it easy for people to contact you with only one phone, don't screen calls and use a short, simple, professional email address.

7 - Networking is king for getting a job.  Read, "How to make people like you in 90 seconds" by Boothman

8 – Use recruiters, but don’t lose your common sense.

9 – Don’t lose your common sense and do things like give strangers your social security number

10 – Be proud of who you are and what you have done and get in a good mood prior to interviews.

11 – Rely on God.

Job Tip # 14: Snap out of it! – Moonstruck 1987 Most people take a traditional and frustrating approach to job searching. After preparing a resume, they usually answer several advertisements, contact a few recruiters, and ask their friends to help. Others will apply directly to companies and wonder why nothing happened. Most people SERIOUSLY over estimate their knowledge of job changing.

Remember, the job market does not exist to serve you.

Because of the overwhelming number of job seekers ready to pounce on new openings, employers often bypass the big online job boards and even placement agencies, and try to fill job openings directly.

Over 80% of today's jobs aren't advertised, according to Howard Poplinger, owner of human-resource company Epic Development and Evaluation.

Companies are relying more heavily on their current employee networks, or on local or specialized job pools, to avoid the flood of unqualified candidates that comes with high unemployment.

MAKEOVERS that GET YOU the JOB!!!!

Joining local networking groups for your profession or LinkedIn may uncover a connection.

Joining a company's community online, through sites like Facebook and Twitter may also provide access to openings before the general public.

Without an "in" at the employer of choice, job seekers can still gain an advantage by contacting the company directly, even if there are no open positions posted.

When it comes to finding out about jobs that are unadvertised, it often boils down to "knocking on doors”.

WARDOBE CHOICES

Job Tip # 7: Keep your friends close and your enemies closer – Godfather 1974 You are going to start building a job network team and guess who is on the team, everyone. If you start networking with everyone you know and you get at least one name from each person, then you should never run out of contacts! Try to meet in-person, on the job, with each person. This will probably be the hardest thing for you do to, especially if you are an introvert like me. Write down names and phone numbers in a notebook. Contact each person weekly and note the date. Working people are busy and sometimes you have to bug them to get them to remember about job possibilities….and sometimes simply new possibilities arise. Battle buddies will be an asset as long as you pick a drill sergeant that is employed….we tend to pick people that are soothing.

Job Tip # 12: Say hello to my little friend – Scarface 1983 Recruiters will help you find a job and it won’t cost you a penny. They are also great practice for the real phone and in-person interviews and they can get you directly in touch with the hiring manager. Meet them in person whenever you can. Just don’t let them push you into a job which you will not like or thrive in. Their job is to sell the job to you and sell you to the employer. They are like used car salesmen, so don’t let them put you in a job you don’t like or that’s a lemon. Also, don’t automatically trust them and spill your guts, remember that what you tell them, could get back to the employer.

Job Tip # 13: Apply even if you’re not qualified What! Are you insane? Let me explain. There are few perfect matches between people and jobs, between resumes and job descriptions. A well written resume shows that you understand the company’s business world and that you pay attention to detail. The person doing the hiring, may not even have written the job description. It is just as hard for employers to find the right person as it is for you to find the right position. Let them know what you can do and what you can learn. Request a short phone interview to get more insight.

Tip 22: My mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my sister thanks you – Yankee Doodle Dandy ‘42 Have your references prepared and ready. Use them as a network to get additional contacts. Some companies demand references, but they don’t use them to check you out…they use them for filling jobs….because you will only use great people as references.

Job Tip # 24: You talking to me? – Taxi Driver 1976 There’s a few job scams out there.  Trust yourself.  If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  Never give out personal info like your social security number, bank account or credit card numbers.  Never pay for anything.  Job searching and recruiters are free.  Remember, this is your job search and you must manage the people that are helping you.  Never assume automatically they have your best interest in mind.  http://www.careerbuilder.com/Article/CB-1214-Job-Search-How-to-Avoid-Job-Scams/

Job Tip #95: I’m OVER QUALIFIED - Help I think if an interviewer says you are over-qualified, then they just don’t like you. If they liked you and wanted you for the job, they would not care if you are over or under qualified. Stop taking the words of interviewers as gospel.  Everything is subjective when you try to get a job. Unless they ask for absolute proof of your abilities, then everything is subjective. If you are getting interviews then your resume must be good. If you are not getting the jobs you interview for, then ah-ha….we have found the issue.

Job Tip #102: Angry, mad, and frustrated I just realized that I am angry because I have not completely grieved over a loss. You may be angry about losing a job and having to deal with the resulting life-changing events. Have you ever met an adult bully? Do you want to be like that? I’m going to take a class on Grief so I can handle my Anger. Hidden – anger can be hidden or disguised as sarcasm, jealousy or mean-ness Decide – uncover your anger and decide to recognize what you are angry about Do Something – staying angry and getting revenge on others is resisting  Forgiveness – the only thing that can free you emotionally
