Snapshot of World Meat Consumption2009
How did we come up with these numbers?Sources
• FAOStat, Food Balance Sheets 2009– http://faostat3.fao.org/faostat-gateway/go/to/download/FB/*/E– Variable: “Per Capita Supply – Total – Kg/year”– By country and meat group
• Bovine Meat• Poultry Meat• Pigmeat
• WaterFootPrint.org– Gallons needed to produce 1 pound of each type of meat
• Feed Conversion Rate– Multiple sources
How did we come up with these numbers?MethodologyUnited States example, bovine meat (“beef”)
• We find that the average American consumes 39.8 kg of beef per year– This is equivalent to 0.24 lbs per day
• Foregoing 1 meal a day means a one-third reduction in daily consumption– This is equivalent to reducing 0.07 lbs of beef per day
• We apply this to the conversion ratios for beef…– 1,857 gallons of water per 1 pound of beef– 6.8 pounds of feed per 1 pound of beef
134 gallons back into the system per day0.49 lbs back into the system per day
• We pro-rate these #s to get yearly figures & adjust according to number of meals forgone
