SEMESTER SYSTEM
(2008 Admission onwards)
Scheme of Examination, Syllabus & Textbooks
1. There will be four semesters in the two-year P.G course with 2 semesters in each year. Each
semester will have 90 instructional days with 5 hours in each day under 5 days week system. Thus
the total number of hours in a semester will be 450.
2. Semester end examinations will be held outside the 90 regular instructional days.
3. There will be four papers in each semester. In addition to this there will be a project/ dissertation
during the entire course and comprehensive viva-voce at the end of the last semester. Duration of the
examination (written papers) will be three hours (for each paper).
4. Scheme of evaluation will be as follows:
The entire course (4 semesters) will have a maximum of 1750 marks, the distribution of which is as
follows:
a. Semester papers (16Nos)
(80 marks for external evaluation and 20 marks for
internal assessment for each paper)
= 1600 (100 x 16)
b. Project/ Dissertation = 100
c. Viva-voce = 50
Total = 1750
5. Scheme of external evaluation of the theory papers, continuous internal evaluation, evaluation of the
Project/Dissertation and the conduct of the final comprehensive viva-voce will be as per the general
guidelines and regulations framed by the University of Calicut, with a minor modification suggested
by the Board of Studies as follows:
The final comprehensive viva-voce will be conducted by a team of external and internal examiners.
6. Pass minimum for each paper will be 40% with a separate minimum of 40% for external evaluation.
There will be no separate minimum and no provision for improvement for internal evaluation.
7. With regard to the pass-requirement, classification of results, ranking, promotion to higher semester
and supplementary examination for failed candidates, the general guidelines and regulations of the
University will be applicable (No. GAI/F2/6847/2001 dt 11th October 2002).

9. PROJECT/ DISSERTATION: A candidate should submit a report of the project work/ dissertation
on any of the optional subjects he/ she selected, under the supervision of the teacher concerned.
Since it is a research – oriented work, the candidate has to acquire basic knowledge in the
methodology of research as well as presentation of papers and dissertations. Consult the following
