Related to the genetic abilities of a specific body is the effect of the environment on an individual. A woman with a gift of clairvoyance living in a family that does not believe in such phenomenon will have difficulty developing her abilities. There are numerous cases of people, who in later life regretted their failure to use their talents. When younger they probably felt threatened or rejected when they discussed these abilities and they learned to ignore or deny these abilities. A child who tells her mother that her dreams come true will stop listening to her dreams if her mother tells her not to believe that.

Within almost all religious traditions, there is documentation of people being physically healed, of hearing God’s voice, or other “miraculous works.” Open the Old Testament to any sentence and within two chapters, either side of that point you will read of some “supernatural” phenomenon. These phenomena include hearing God’s voice, seeing into the future, or making changes in the physical world. Often these actions occur in a trance like or dream state. Unfortunately, we have been lead to believe that these actions are reserved for the few, the chosen ones. The fact is, because of God’s call to us we are all the chosen.

Many relationships are created to own the illusion of power through control dramas, and many folks feed their addiction to shame and fear by creating dramas to replicate past relationships of other partners or their family of origin. I have learned great respect for the courage both partners offer in the process of connecting with themselves and therefore their partner. They begin to realize their behavior is a symptom of deeper issues yet to be resolved. They find a way to move from judgment toward acceptance.

Losing Me to Control YouJohn A McMullin, hc, cht

and leigh RAndolph, ddS, hc

As we set out to learn through our early experiences of life, we soon discover the power of getting attention. Those behaviors include crying, suffering, bullying, clowning, hiding, blaming or any behavior that either focuses attention on us or away from us. In the mind of a small child, any kind of attention can equal power or fill the need for connection. Although our adult consciousness believes we can escape early imprints that become control dramas, they continue to reside at a subconscious level and those patterns dominate us when we feel needy. Control dramas are passive and aggressive behaviors that allow ego parts to believe in the illusion of power from an arrogant or pathetic position.

What does it mean to lose me? Losing self is a childish choice for survival in our environment rather than living; not having the mature awareness that our individual emotional, spiritual, mental, physical and intuitive needs are unique. When we give ourselves away out of obligation, more than 20% of the time, we create a loyal relationship rather than one based on respect. When we do things out of loyalty and obligation we experience resentment for self and project misdirected anger outward. It is an indication that we have lost the ability to nurture ourselves and navigate life in a way that allows us to participate equally with others. Instead, we continue to depend on others for nurturing, approval or disapproval.

We often experience life from our subconscious agenda of giving up parts of self to control attention and affection from others. How do we challenge the symptoms of attempting to control others at the expense of losing self? Perhaps we begin by noticing our behavior when we feel empty, lonely or overwhelmed. We observe how we feel when we are with or not with other people. We become curious about the control dramas we use to manipulate other people or aspects of self. One control drama, which is easy to spot, is people pleasing. How often do you agree to something in which you aren’t really interested or talk yourself into wanting to do something to please the other person? You might do that because you are afraid of conflict or because you want to be included, liked or approved.

Leigh Randolph, D.D.S., is a Board Certified Endodontist who has a private practice and teaches dentistry at the Ohio State University. She is a certified Visionary Craniosacral Work Practitioner, Holistic Coach and Reiki Master.

Examples include choosing a career to please a parent or spouse, having sex to please your partner or giving into another’s financial choices that don’t fit your values. When we make choices like that we are giving ourselves away to try to control the other person or persons, when on the inside we are really controlling ourselves and making inauthentic choices. Another example is thinking we can ‘fix’ or ‘help’ other people, because we don’t like seeing their discomfort. When we rush to help everyone we know feel good, but we give ourselves away and avoid doing our own inner work, we are “losing me.” In trying to ‘fix’ others, we avoid our own pain, and the control dramas become behavioral choices we make to avoid emotional or spiritual pain.

Are there parts of our ego that use attention in all of its forms as a powerful tool? Discovering the cycle of acting out victim, rescuer and punisher within our own mind, or projected onto others requires the loss of self to believe that we are able to control our own ego parts or those of others. The cycle begins when we feel we have been victimized and attempt to punish so we can move from helpless to powerful. These feelings of being out of control and wanting to be in control are symptoms of an ego part that feels frightened or shamed. When we punish ourselves, one ego part feels righteous while another feels wounded. Then we attempt to rescue the wounded ego part and when it is not enough, we return to feeling the helpless victim once again. The inner voice that constantly criticizes us is an example of the punisher that creates the victim, which it attempts to rescue. When we project this cycle onto others, we experience feeling inadequate in our ability to save other people from themselves. We project the shame and fear into self and onto others as anger. When we own the illusion of power/control by being pathetic and righteous, we repeat the cycle of losing self by choosing people in life who dominate or abuse us through aggressive or passive behavior. We are then able to continue feeling pathetic and righteous. To stop the cycle we must begin to notice how others react to our behavior and inner cycles. Once we realize we draw people into our own cycle, we can begin to understand the consequences of losing self to participate in these dramas. With that understanding, we can learn to make conscious choices and change.

If we realize our behavior is driven from our subconscious mind, how do we create a conscious choice to change the beliefs that we created as small children? Many Holistic Coaches™ use different rituals to re-integrate the childish beliefs of our subconscious into the adult consciousness of today. Realizing that children seek feelings of safety and value, we find the communication tools to speak with dominant ego parts that are feeling fear and shame. We find the desire to re-parent the wounded child who acts out loss of self to control others. Most notably, we remove fear and shame about control from the subconscious by forgiving ourselves for the behavior that appeared necessary when we were children. We realize that working on symptoms has little effect and working on the neediness of a frightened ego part creates a new experience of feeling safe and valued. When we learn to re-visit the intersections in our life where we felt overwhelmed, lost, and out of control, we can begin to help that part of our ego learn to trust the self of today. That is when magic begins to happen. We start to realize as we nurture our self from the inside, that we don’t need or crave as much attention or validation from the outside. We become aware that nurturing and growing self is a lifelong effort that continues to expand our awareness and brings more attention to the process as we grow into our years of self-realization and wisdom. We learn to express gratitude for the challenges of our early life, which motivates growth in our later life.

As we adapt to the old behaviors, we participate in these dramas out of loyalty and familiarity. When we become an observer of the dramas and understand their consequences, we begin to find self and start living mindfully. We agree to change our reactive behavior with others and choose to minimize contact with those who are still attached to controlling behaviors that require losing me to control you.

Defining and Demystifying Forgiveness Part 2

Part 1 published in the Fall, 2013 issue of SelfGrowthWisdom.com *

Forgiveness has long been a mystery to me; its concepts seeming vague at best, and at worst, misleading. I would like to shed some light on forgiveness and offer you my version of what it does and does not mean. In this article we’ll explore the myths and possible truths to forgiveness. This is what I have discovered to be true, and I invite you to consider their truthfulness for you and your experiences. What would it mean to you to both clear away the confusion of forgiveness and create an authentic feeling around it?

Here are the myths and possible truths to forgiveness. Notice I used the word “possible.” It may or may not be true for you. That is important to acknowledge.

Myth: Forgiveness is a “covering up” of the past.Possible Truth: Forgiveness is creating a new present. For many years I have had a love/hate relationship with forgiveness – primarily because of my experience with this specific myth. Forgiveness never seemed right to me, for it appeared to marginalize my past hurts and wounds. What I have learned, is that forgiveness doesn’t seek to defend or approve of the past, but it pours its energy into creating a new story in the present moment. That truth feels right for me. As you process this concept, how does it feel to you?

Myth: Forgiveness means ceasing to be angry.Possible Truth: Forgiveness means becoming friends with anger.I have heard it said many times, “That which you resist will persist.” That statement has proven to be true for me, especially with my anger. The old concepts of forgiveness never felt authentic, since it seemed to ask me to resist my feelings of anger. I have since realized that forgiveness never seeks to deny my anger, but teaches me how to process and express it in more optimal and healthy ways. I call this process “becoming friends with anger.” What would it mean to you if you could create a new relationship with your anger?

Myth: Forgiveness is a readiness to reconcile with another.Possible Truth: Forgiveness is a readiness to reflect on one’s self.Reconciliation does not always feel right. Anything that feels obligatory, rarely feels right or authentic. This is how forgiveness has felt in the past for me. I have seen the forgiveness process as starting and ending with some sort of reconciliation with another - whether it felt right for me to do so or not. When I began to understand that forgiveness is more about my readiness to reflect on myself, my power was given back to me. This truer sense of power comes from removing myself from the compliant/defiant cycle that can and usually does present itself in most forgiveness concepts. When I feel obligated to forgive or accept forgiveness I am left with the choice becoming compliant or defiant to the process. Putting my attention where it really belongs – reflecting on myself, gives me back the power to heal my wounds.

Myth: Forgiveness is moving away from pain.Possible Truth: Forgiveness is moving towards intimacy. Most, if not all organisms, seek to move away from pain and towards pleasure, but what if you found out that pleasure is only pleasing once we have experienced pain? Would that give you a new outlook on emotional pain? I have used forgiveness as a pain reliever in the past and it didn’t work for me. What did work was to respect my pain enough by seeking intimacy. In my experience, intimacy most often means being vulnerable... but with whom and how? Being vulnerable is less physical than emotional and less about others than it is about ourselves. Another description of intimacy could be this: The relationship I have with myself about others. That feels true for me, and therefore forgiveness moves me closer to connecting with myself. Forgiveness is looking at my pain as I step towards intimacy.

Myth: Forgiveness is all about forgiving others.Possible Truth: Forgiveness is all about forgiving yourself.Although forgiveness may appear to be about others, I invite you to consider this: It is never about another person, it is always about you and your story about the other person. Is it ever possible to know someone else? I mean to really know them? What if the truth is that the only thing we know about others are the stories we have made up about them? This means that you have created your version of who I am, and I have created my version of who you are. For some this may feel freeing, for others this may feel frightening. Either way, I have found truth in this. If we proceed with this in mind, can we ever forgive anyone? Might we really only be forgiving ourselves for what we have made them into? Consider this: forgiveness is all about forgiving ourselves, any more or any less will further confuse and dilute its power in our lives.

I invite you to create your own list of forgiveness myths. Look into how they have shaped your view of yourself. Forgiveness is like losing a key in the darkness. To find it we must consider stepping into the dark, and with the light of even the smallest candle, we may find what we are looking for. For me, forgiveness of self is that candle.

I am frequently astonished by how smart people can be so stupid at times. That is, people who are smart (just like people who are not so smart) can make decisions that are counterproductive for them. I have come to associate “smart” with having unique insights into immediate events linked to short term ramifications (such as solving a math equation or figuring the number of square feet in a defined area) and “wisdom” with having unique insights with the bigger picture and long term ramifications.

Smart is knowing how to escape a riptide undertow while swimming in the ocean. Wisdom is knowing whether or not you should be swimming in the ocean in the first place. Smart is knowing how to earn an “A” in a college course. Wisdom is knowing whether or not you should attend college or what university to attend. I encourage the reader to recognize the difference between being smart and wise in their lives and to seek wisdom.

Maintaining wisdom will help you to stand back and differentiate the forest from the trees. To better realize your potential by considering the entire landscape you live in, not just what you see on your immediate horizon.

Realizing your potential and deciding the direction to go with that potential draws more from wisdom than being smart. Similarly, evaluating decisions you have made requires wisdom. Smart provides the building blocks but wisdom tells where to build the structure.

I have found wisdom can be problematic in that, if it is in short supply, the wise move to make can be in opposition to the direction peers are going. When I was in high school, I made the conscious decision not to pursue participation in contact sports. The primary reason was that I would rather work and make money I could use for college expenses. Secondary to that was the understanding that I only had one body and did not want to risk doing unnecessary damage to it. I recognized that contact sports provided an opportunity to develop team skills, experience growth with physical prowess and have a good time but that there were other ways to achieve the same objectives. The particular culture of the school I attended stressed football as the primary means for establishing oneself within the institution. I simply didn’t see it that way and quietly proceeded with my own agenda. I went to the games but didn’t play in them.

Similarly, illegal drug use was common in my high school generation but I immediately recognized it as counterproductive. Putting an unknown substance (or one that I really didn’t know much about) into my body seemed incredibly short sighted. Again, I recognized I only had one body and to unnecessarily damage it would be a major regret for me. This certainly did not gel with prevailing attitudes of my peers but the resulting dialogs further exposed the weak rationale behind the drug use and affirmed, in my mind, that I was on the right track.

I was not particularly moved by the positions presented by parents, school administration and community leaders that illegal drug use was against the law, for losers, unpopular or an unwise path to take. I specifically focused on the premise that I’d no more put any unknown substance in my body than I would put an unknown liquid in my gas tank. The former could damage my body while the latter could damage my car engine.

In hindsight, I realize my wisdom has not always been as strong as I might like. Though I was opposed to illegal

drug use for me, I didn’t have the same reservations regarding alcohol consumption. After all, it was a known substance. The government regulates the content of a can of beer. It is a known entity with known effects. Hindsight has shown me alcohol, though regulated, is also detrimental to the body.

When you are confronted with decisions in life regarding directions to take in relation to realizing your full potential, it is exceedingly helpful to reflect on the wisdom of the proposed course of action. Just because you can achieve it does not mean it is the right direction for you to take. You should consider where the action will take you. Is it really where you want to go? How does it contribute to your life goals? Could it actually detract from the achievement of those life goals? Could you meet the same objective in a more productive manner?

The metaphor I use parallels the concept of driving with a road map. The smart person can tune a car engine, make it run well and maximize fuel efficiency but when they are out on the road, if they are without wisdom, they run the risk of driving in circles or not reaching a desired destination. The wise person has a road map in mind that underscores the destination and a variety of places along the way to that destination. Even if they are walking, at least they will know if they are going in the right direction toward a desired destination. It is better to be walking two miles an hour toward a desired location than to be driving 60 miles an hour toward an unknown (and possibly counterproductive) destination.

I have found that some people seem to have an innate wisdom that they can draw from while others, such as myself, have had to develop it. Such development of wisdom typically evolves by learning from experiences you encounter. It can be painful to realize you’ve made wrong turns in life and need to do some back tracking, but it can be very reassuring to know you are on the right track in life – even if it means more work and sacrifices in other areas of life.Jim Schnell, Ph.D. (Ohio University, 1982) is a Professor of Communication Processes at Ohio Dominican University. His teaching and research focuses on the relevance of vision with our realization of self-potential. Contemporary physics recognizes that everything is made of atoms and molecules that vibrate. We are part of that everything; our bodies are made of vibrating molecules that have one frequency with health and different frequencies of vibration with disease. Different symptoms create different vibrations in the body, as do different kinds of disease. Contemporary Western medicine tends to seek symptom relief, rather than discovering the source of a problem and returning the body to a vibration of health.

In the late 1800’s, a German physician pursued the idea that if he could find substances that would recreate particular symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, itching or headaches, he could give that substance to a patient already experiencing such symptoms, and effectively cancel out the vibration of the illness and return the patient to health. He also discovered that the active vibrational information in a substance can be significantly diluted and still be effective. After exhaustive research on himself and a few others, Homeopathy came into being. For over 150 years, it has been shown to be an effective, powerful way to help regain health through vibrational medicine. Homeopathy is extremely popular in a number of countries even though many Americans are not familiar with its effectiveness and freedom from side effects.

When Everything Else Seems To Fail, Can We Heal Through Vibrational Medicine?

With the advent of electronics and an understanding of how energy is transmitted through light, sound and radio waves, the idea of transmitting healing energy through an electronic medium was born. The Harmonic Translation System is one of those technologies. The term refers to the translation of biological information in the harmonic frequencies and the relationship of one note to another. A practitioner of the system uses electronic kinesiology and intuition to enable the system to analyze the health and well being of the client. A mathematical grid allows for the representation of the vibrations of many different kinds of remedies to be stored and then translated into healing frequencies. The client can subsequently experience a custom designed healing program to help resolve physical, emotional and spiritual issues.

This approach to healing has grown quickly among practitioners of complementary medicine. One of the popular practitioners in central Ohio is Beth Brooks. She has been a holistic facilitator for over a decade, and her clients have many testimonies

that validate the power of the work. Beth has helped physicians and veterinarians discover the

cause underlying a patient’s symptoms when traditional testing could not. If you are

Digestive health is the number one reported benefit of drinking Kombucha tea. It is widely considered an outstanding remedy for upset stomach, acid reflux and constipation. Many people with curable or inflamed bowel conditions report relief during flare-ups and a lessening of general symptoms. Chronic and acute indigestion may also be relieved by this fermented tea drink.

digeStionThe digestive benefits begin in the stomach where the acid pH of the drink compliments the acid pH of the healthy stomach conditions. The living enzymes in the tea may help to complement the activity of the body’s own digestive enzymes and assist in the breakdown of foods. In the intestines the organic acids of the probiotics bacteria in the tea help to balance the internal environment and support the growth of healthy gut fluoride. Overall Kombucha is regarded as an excellent digestive tonic.

iMMune SySteMKombucha can also support the immune system. Toxins and pathogens can infiltrate the body through three major points of entry: airway, skin and the digestive tract. They are the first contact for the majority of unwanted substances infecting the body. Approximately 60 to 70% of the immune system is housed in the gut to help protect us from foreign invaders. This is where Kombucha offers assistance beginning in the stomach. Bacteria cannot survive in the low pH acid of a healthy stomach. However, as we age, output of Hydrochloric Acid needed for digestion decreases and sometimes ceases almost entirely. Acid in the Kombucha helps to lower the pH in the stomach, supporting the role of Hydrochloric Acid and immune defense.

inteStineSKombucha also supports short-lived cells that line the intestinal walls that supply immune support with intercellular junctions, detoxification enzymes and gut associated tissue. Kombucha also helps the intestines by providing probiotic yeast and bacteria that process fiber from the diet. When the gut is nurtured by Kombucha, illness caused by toxins in foreign pathogens in the gut are far less likely to cause disease.

detoxificAtionKombucha tea is packed with detoxifying properties that can help promote liver detoxification and the elimination of toxic substances from the body. Candida is a type of yeast that occurs as part of the normal colonization of microorganisms in the human digestive tract. Chronic stress, antibiotic use, a diet high in refined carbohydrates, sugars, and other factors can cause overgrowth of Candida in the body. Symptoms such as frequent yeast infections, depression, chronic fatigue can sometimes be traced to Candida overgrowth.

lARge inteStineKombucha tea can provide aid in repopulating the large intestine with healthy probiotic bacteria that improve gut ecology and fight unwanted yeast and other bacteria. With its optimum organic acid content, it is probably the best choice for people battling Candida symptoms. The natural fermentation from the tea helps to keep healthy people healthy, and to compensate for processed foods and other toxins that destroy healthy flora in the digestive system.

One of the best selections for Kombucha tea comes from a local producer who uses organic green teas, sugar, beneficial bacteria and naturally fermented cultures to create the tea.

“How can I know what my soul’s missions are?” is a very important questionsince a vast and varied amount of evidence clearly shows we are spiritual beings.

“Margaret,” an older female in North Carolina, told my workshop group that she didn’t know what her mission was. “I’ve tried and tried to figure it out,” she stated, “and I can’t come up with anything.” In an attempt to help clarify her life purpose, I asked how she spent her time. “Over the last seven years, I’ve helped eight friends and family members who were very ill and stayed with them until they passed on. I’ve been so busy that I don’t have time to figure out my soul’s missions.”

If only all questions were so easy to solve.

Realizing your nature as an infinite soul bestows many gifts. One is trusting yourself enough to follow your greatest joys. What clearer way could Creator reveal your unique path than by what you are excited and passionate about? As Joseph Campbell said: “If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there the whole while, waiting for you, and the life you ought to be living is the one you are living.”

Follow your heart, do what you feel called to do. Trust your intuition, that wise inner voice that guides you about every aspect of your life. The pieces of life’s puzzle will fall in place as more and more people—starting with you—pursue their bliss. It’s like the old hide the button game: when you’re enthusiastic, you’re getting hotter.

Your soul, in alignment with Divine order, chose missions before you came to earth. Clues to those missions are revealed by your greatest dreams and desires. You and everyone else have life visions and special talents to share. Universe totally supports those who assist God’s plan to bring peace, joy, love and light on earth.

This is not just lofty, impractical spiritual advice; it’s useful information that can increase the quality and quantity of life. For example, the most common time for heart attacks is early Monday morning. Day after day, year after year of following a path with no heart or soul literally compromises one’s anatomical heart.

I’ve counseled a number of persons who hated their work but were afraid to follow their bliss. “After I retire, then I’ll start that little business I’ve always dreamed of,” they say. When I ask about their life’s dream, they invariably pause for a moment. Then their eyes light up as they describe what they would do “if only…” The truth is, each person can follow his or her calling. Doing so, at least part-time, is a key to experiencing Heaven on earth. Attending to the soul’s mission is usually

Seven Keys to Identifying and FulfillingYour Soul’s Missions/Higher Purposes

Page 22: SelfGrowthWisdomselfgrowthwisdom.com/magazinePDFs/Winter2013-14.pdf · radiant Light, living only to ... Coach and Reiki Master. ... or projected onto others requires the loss of

20

a multi-dimensional process. We each have numerous roles in life—family member, significant other, friend, worker, church member, community participant and individual. Following your bliss doesn’t mean forsaking all other roles and just focusing on one aspect. On the contrary, being totally successful and achieving our soul’s mission means meeting all our roles impeccably.

Fulfilling your various roles can be challenging, but it’s possible. Making a commitment to identify and pursue your dreams is a first step. Some people have the circumstances and chutzpah to make abrupt changes and follow their bliss full time. Others may choose to make a more gradual transition over time. Whichever path you choose, start now!

Let yourself dream for a moment using your fullest imagination, then answer this question: “If you knew you could not fail, how would you live?” Let the images flow and feel the excitement as, perhaps for the first time, you become aware of your soul’s callings. Following them will put you in touch with the joy and purpose that is your birthright.

At the same time, be wise about it. A Middle Eastern saying about this is: “Trust Allah, but tie up your camel.” Daily living requires a certain income to survive; don’t rush off and quit your day job prematurely. Stay with your current work and expand your services until you naturally grow into your higher calling.

To begin identifying your soul’s purpose, close your eyes, let yourself become relaxed, and ask for assistance from God and the Heavenly host. Give thanks for guidance and assistance in realizing your soul’s missions. Then listen quietly for that still small voice within. Note any clues that arise spontaneously, such as words, pictures, feelings, colors, people and places. Now answer the following questions by noting the very first response that spontaneously arises:

1. What are you naturally good at? 2. What would you do if money were no object? 3. What would you do if you had only one year to live? 4. What would you do without pay because you enjoy it? 5. What do you read and talk about in your spare time? 6. What chokes you up, gives you goose bumps, cold chills, and tears in your eyes or pressure over your chest? 7. How do you feel called to assist others and global transformation? Some people think that their soul’s

mission has to single-handedly change the world. The old church hymn, “Brighten the corner where you are” lends a hint. Do the best you can within your sphere of influence and know that’s enough. Let your compassionate heart show you who needs help and how. And don’t forget to put yourself on your list of priorities.

Someday you will fly away from this demanding but wonderfully instructive classroom. Until then, your task is to learn, love, serve, enjoy and leave this planet a better place than when you arrived. Why not do so with style and grace—a totally successful human who clearly remembers your magnificent soul nature!

Can you recall your dreams that ignited the passion of adventure and discovery? Do you remember the excitement you felt as a child to imagine yourself as a queen or king, political leader, scientist, healer or other great visionary? What happened to the burning desire of fulfilling the destiny of dreams that created such a sense of purpose and passion for life? Why do we put these dreams to sleep and learn to live with mediocrity, thereby merely “surviving” instead of really living? If we have let our dreams die, we cannot be fully awake.

Is it possible that we have allowed the judgment and projections of others who dismiss and berate us to direct our path in life? What if we discovered our own defiance, belligerence, hurt, anger and shame have decided our path of apathy and indifference to ignoring the calling of our dreams? How do we process the reality that perhaps we hide from our own greatness, in order to receive approval from others? How can we wake up from our self-inflicted stupor that separates us from the excitement of the dream we put to sleep?

Can you recall what the dream represented to you, how you thought about it and what emotions

Awakening the Dreams We Carry Insideyou attached to the dream? What if you awakened to the dream through the process of writing to yourself about how it would feel to reclaim it? Put it into words and describe how the dream feels and what you think about it, and what it now represents at this time in your life?

What if we wrote about the adventure of living a dream from the light and shadow aspects? We could write down the reasons to pursue the dream and the rationale we use to separate from the dream. We could expand our awareness by writing what our dream would represent to others and consider who would provide support or criticism, and what that would mean to us.

The next step might involve finding others who have expressed similar aspects of our dream and ask what motivated their journey and sustained it. We could also ask help from our imagination and create a vision that connects us to possibilities beyond the limits of our own ego. Be mindful that too much visualization can satisfy the ego mind and actually allow us to create the rationalization to desert the journey. We must balance the creative visualization process with the reality of pursuing our desires.

Finally, we will need the inspiration and validation from a source greater than self. We would ask to open our mind and heart to how we are being guided so we can create a trust between lower and Higher Self about the journey.

Although many believe a dream is about acquiring joy and happiness, many great dreamers realize they are searching for the satisfaction of living their passion. We are in search of giving our best effort without using ego chatter to distract us from the dream. Satisfaction includes the ability to value our best effort and be surprised at how our passion ultimately expresses itself. We become aware that we are a unique vessel to create, manifest and express life in the dream. Great dreamers have learned the power of expressing gratitude for being the vessel and have learned how not to carry the responsibility of being the source of the dream. Dreams feed our soul. They fill us with passion to express life in a unique way, ideally leading us to actions which help others experience and express their dreams. Often we discover our original dream is a portal to other dreams, and thus enjoy the experience dreams creating dreams.

Could this awakening show us the difference between living and surviving? Are you willing to embrace the dreams that hide from you? Do you believe your dreams come from within you, or are they from the outside? Some argue that the dreams that ‘come’ to us are called night dreams and the dreams that come from within us are called our daydreams. Many dreamers would tell us they support each other. Innumerable songs have been written about dreaming and the impossible dream. Are you willing to write your song?

What is Holistic Coaching?MAJA gottlieB, BS, hc

I believe, based on my certification with Journeys of Wisdom, that Holistic Coaching is empowering people to experience reverence for themselves intuitively, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. (I.M.E.S.P.) To break it down further, it is the holistic approach of teaching others how to help themselves. It begins with noticing how the hidden and repetitive beliefs and symptoms created by the ego manifest as both functional and unhealthy habits.

A Holistic Coach uses intuition to minimize the seduction of the discovery process that invites clients to discover that they are not upset about their defective stories but rather the control dramas of their own subconscious mind. The process incorporates an ascension and descension of the four levels of consciousness or realms. For the purpose of clarity, this discussion is based on a simplified version of the ascension and descension process.

First, the Literal Realm is to allow the person to tell their story so they can “know thy self.” Here the client speaks their truth and hears their version of the story. The coach is hearing the literal spoken story and listening for the story underneath the story (this is based on the fact that we are never angry about what we think we are). It is also the time where the coach and the client develop the beginning stages of a safe, comfortable environment for the healing.

The second realm is the Metaphoric Realm. In it, the client is asked what their story means to them, so they can “know thy symbols” and raise their awareness to a higher consciousness. The importance of this step is to help the

person understand that to “heal thyself ” one must open themselves to higher consciousness, for no new solution can be discovered with the same consciousness which created it. (We can thank Einstein for this concept…“You cannot solve a problem from the same consciousness that created it. You must learn to see the world anew.”)

Third is the Paradoxical Realm, where the coach is introducing the client to identify the benefits and consequences of their decisions. Here is where the client is taught to understand “know who you are not.” The importance of this step is for the client to start to understand their confusion is built upon the unknown parts of themselves.

The Fourth Realm of the ascension is the Creative Realm. It is how the client can create a new story and revisit the possibilities of how they might have done things differently if they had the chance. This is to “know who is thy creator.” In this, the coach helps the client see the results of past actions and determine how different actions might have resulted in different outcomes. Now as we know, “what goes up must come down.” (Thank you to Isaac Newton for this one.)

So, the next steps are for the descension and grounding of self. As the client stands in the creative realm and prepares to descend,

26

...“to ‘heal thyself ’ one must open themselves to higher consciousness, for no new solution can be discovered with the same consciousness which created it.”

they begin to “know thy are creator” of their story. This is where they give voice to a new story and help themselves to separate from the victim role and open up to new possibilities. They become empowered to make better choices in their life and help themselves start the self-healing process. The next step is back into the paradoxical realm where they give meaning to their suffering and allow forgiveness of self. By acknowledging the suffering, they “know who thy are” and can release themselves from the illusion of fear and shame. Following this step, they go back to the Metaphoric Realm, where they revisit what their stories represent to them and “know what thy represent” to self and others. In the completion of the healing, the client enters back into the Literal Realm where they find out how they represent life and get to “know thy stories.” The client can then become fully aware of his/her uniqueness and experience transcendence of self-awakening. It allows the new consciousness to settle in just in time for the other ego parts to come out of their confusion and send the client into rebounding. This is when the client will truly understand what it feels like to experience vulnerability and compassion for self.

We move through our spiritual and work lives in several phases. With perseverance and attention, and to a great extent reflection and action, life moves with us as years progress. Along the way, we ponder our purpose, our impact, our effect on loved ones,

our community and the world. As we expand our thinking to imagine that our life experience follows a flow and pattern similar

to others, we learn that moving through these phases results in a dynamic symbiosis between the Spirit within and the resonance of what we

experience.

phASe one – WhAt you doEffort, labor, stamina and work epitomize the initial phase in our lives.

During this time, we gather information and knowledge through a variety of learning opportunities. The rigors of daily school tasks, followed by tests

and requirements of academia occupy our youth in demanding ways. Here we explore the various methods of receiving information and assimilating it

(learning), and with any luck, discover which delivery method works best for us.

Many Phase One “entry-level” jobs are labor intensive and require onerous physicality for little pay. Often, they are repetitive, menial and tiresome. Remember – this type of work is fact-

gathering, information accumulating and not meant to be your life’s purpose or the end of the employment vista. The backbreaking jobs are the “paying your dues” jobs that serve to bolster us in years to come. We’re paid for what we do.

In the spiritual Phase One, we gather information about the unseen. We learn about various approaches to God, dogma surrounding worship and assess what feels right in our hearts. Studying, listening and engaging in ritual all serve as channels through which we explore our relationship with the Infinite.

phASe tWo – WhAt you knoWLearning never ends. Phase Two is the time to apply all we’ve accumulated in the world thus far and capitalize on it. It’s a glorious time for creativity, expansion, insight and the application of knowledge. When we embrace learning, our light shines in the darkness for all to see.

In our career path, Phase Two is the time we see recompense for all the effort expended earlier in life. Acquired skills coupled with the ability (and most importantly, the desire) to continue learning, pay handsomely during this large portion of life. In this phase, we are paid for what we know.

Our spiritual Phase Two is the practice and example-setting phase of all earlier explored beliefs. We begin to look at life and our place in the world through the eyes of our beliefs and often turn to the Infinite for advice or comfort. During this time of life, we develop friendships, set boundaries and look for deeper meaning. We wrestle with concepts such as judgment, acceptance and free will. Here we learn what works for and with us in our chosen spiritual path, and what does not. We learn to make decisions with God in mind while solidly living the human experience.

phASe thRee – Who you knoWWhile Phase Three isn’t the “end,” we see it as a pinnacle of our active lives. Think of Phase Three as the corporate CEO of your life. He’s probably flipped burgers (Phase One), and worked hard to achieve success in his profession and establish a kinship between his work life and spiritual nature (Phase Two).

In this phase, our value to others is measured by the ability to bring together the relationships we established along the way. While this phase rarely requires or expects manual labor, it does demand a special insight into the ways of the world and how to get things done. The best - and sometimes only - way to ensure forward success is knowing who holds the knowledge, wherewithal and desire to accomplish a task. With that knowledge, we can then assemble a team of individuals to perform specific functions enabling us to reach a goal and keep them all in balance and happy. In Phase Three, we are paid for who we know.

In Spiritual Phase Three, we receive gratification from our relationship with God. We’ve worked hard to discover God in our lives and practice our beliefs and now we actualize the essence of Spirit and enjoy how it relates to every aspect in life. When we begin to see God everywhere because we have gained an understanding of inter-relationships, we bask in a little magic and contentment.

it’S JuSt A phASeNo matter where we stand in life, it’s only temporary. We move forward and backward between various stages of our life. Life patiently and generously offers up the same lesson until we learn it and move on. More importantly, we learn the lesson, learn from the lesson and learn to avoid the negative circumstances in the future.

The Infinite stays with us, ebbing back and forth like the rolling tides of change, as we walk to the shore then dare to venture into the ocean of the unknown. Quietly providing buoyancy, Spirit patiently waits until we learn enough to swim on. And if we don’t, Spirit loves us anyway.

In the world of “be-do-have,” all that remains is who you ARE.

As a teacher and coach, one of the issues I so often see is that people look outside themselves for answers, for development and for enlightenment. They spend immense amounts of time and money chasing down the next big thing – be it a guru, a system, a book or an idea. Always chasing what is outside of yourself will eventually leave you empty and unfulfilled. If this sounds like your journey, if you feel as though you’ve missed the boat, be encouraged. With the right vehicle and road map, you can find the answers and even enlightenment.

The merkabah, which roughly translates in Hebrew to chariot, refers to the throne of God. It is seen as two interlocking tetrahedrons, forming a three dimensional Star of David. There are many gnostic and new age interpretations about what it is and what it represents. It is integral to sacred geometry and is believed to create an electromagnetic field that integrates the physical and spiritual. It is mentioned in the Torah, the Bible and other religious texts, including Zulu and Ancient Egyptian. My goal here is not to explain the various beliefs surrounding it, but to demonstrate that it can be used as a model for personal growth. The development that the model inspires is an inward path where all of the answers reside already.

I like models. They bring the conceptual to form and help me understand complex ideas easily. They are great teaching tools. I originally channeled this model a year ago and now use it as a way of explaining how there is a growth pattern for getting

to know ourselves and cultivating the qualities that highly functioning people demonstrate. This model, when applied, takes you deep within yourself to cultivate understanding and wisdom. Aristotle stated, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” I concur. As we get to know ourselves and get in touch with our innate sacred nature, qualities emerge that are tangible and repeatable in everyone.

For this model, we will discuss the lower tetrahedron, then the upper tetrahedron and then

how they integrate. A point should be made here: These qualities and your innate sacredness are always there. We have simply been conditioned

away from that awareness. This process is about reclaiming the awareness of what has always been.

The lower tetrahedron represents qualities that

are a necessary foundation for reclaiming our innate

sacredness. These qualities include connection, compassion and

child-likeness. The upper tetrahedron represents

qualities that increase our connection with the ineffable mystery. These

qualities include sensuality, mindfulness and authenticity. Collectively, they create a vehicle

for our inner sacred to emerge.

The lower tetrahedron begins with connection. There are four connections that we all share and are necessary for our complete development; The inner connection we have with ourselves (which is the foundation of all other connections), the connection with others (including family, friends, lovers, etc.),

the connection to our natural world which sustains us and the connection to the ineffable mystery (which some may term God). This is the starting point for spiritual development and awareness. Connection cultivates love, intimacy, empathy, sharing and understanding. It engenders a sense of who we are and how we belong. Connection creates compassion.

Compassion is a visceral understanding and caring for others’ struggles and pain. The more compassion we cultivate, the less division there is between ourselves and others. Compassion gives rise to kindness, gentleness, forgiveness, caring, mercy and patience. Compassion turned inward deepens the connection with our inner child, which allows our child-likeness to flow freely.

Child-likeness is the necessary requisite for higher spiritual awareness. It engenders curiosity, openness, joy, wonder and awe. Watch a well nurtured toddler and you see these qualities in their natural state. Joy “just because.” Curiosity and wonder without being jaded or cynical. Openness without judgment. The qualities that child-likeness brings open us to the full experience of life, which in turn increases our sensuality.

The upper tetrahedron begins with sensuality, which is the full awareness and use of our senses. It is being in touch with life, experiencing every sensation, every feeling and every event. It is a way of living tapped into the flow of life. It gives rise to increased awareness, increased sensitivity, gratitude, pleasure and deeper connection. As we allow our awareness to increase, we become more mindful.

Mindfulness is a state of open, active attention on the present. Many people live lost in their past or projecting into their future. All of our power as Human beings is in the present. We have the power to create, to change, to experience and to be – but only in the present moment. Being mindful increases our sense of purpose, our sense of meaning and our sense of well-being. It strengthens our focus,

increases connection and promotes joy. As we become more mindful and reclaim our power, we become more authentic and congruent.

Authenticity is a state of being who we truly are, devoid of the impact of our conditioning. Having cultivated our connections, increased our compassion, tuned into our child-likeness, become more sensual and mindful, we have investigated ourselves inwardly and outwardly to a very high degree. This allows us to know who we are. It engenders congruent behaviors. It deepens love for ourself and others, and increases our openness to life. As we mature in our awareness about who we are, we realize our sacred nature that has existed all along. We take possession of our “I Am-ness.” We take ownership of our evolutionary becoming, our creative power and our sacred nature. We move into the open-ended concept of what “I Am” represents: an uncharted place of nearly unlimited potential. The powers and qualities that are cultivated within this merkabah model put us in touch with our sacred Self, which becomes the navigator of our higher purpose.

So, the journey of inner cultivation awaits. Your chariot is ready. You have a road map for reaching your sacred potential. The only thing left is the specifics. In part two, I will discuss specific methods for cultivating each level and beginning the journey. In part three, I will discuss methods for healing the impediments that often block the progression to connect with your inner sacred. This is a paramount journey of epic proportion. It is the journey to the center of yourself, to the you that you’ve always been, and your chariot awaits.
