2.3 Teaching- Learning Process 2.3.1 Student centric methods, such as experiential learning, participative learning and problem

solving methodologies are used for enhancing learning experiences

Response:

The institute provides newer technological resources in order to modify and improvise the traditionalmodes of teaching/learning to make the process student centric. The institution aids in every way toupgrade the infrastructure and procure resources for effective delivery of the curriculum. Teachers providea host of additional resources while taking students beyond curriculum.

Student centric learning is focused on the needs of students, their abilities, interests and learning styleswhere the teacher acts as a facilitator. Students have been engaged report writing, seminars, quizzes, debates, group discussions, group mini projects to enhance their learning experiences. Classroom teachingis one-to-many, but to make it more students centric, various strategies are adopted by the institute.

Experiential learning: Experiential learning supports students in applying their knowledge and conceptualunderstanding to real-world problems or authentic situations where the teacher directs and facilitateslearning. Students take initiative, make decisions and sometimes may be accountable for the results. Weconduct health camps for poor people on the regular basis. Prior to initiate the health camp, we directstudents to gather the information and report the health problems in slum areas, and ask to suggest theremedies. It provides them opportunities to be engaged intellectually, creatively, emotionally, socially, orphysically. Our teachers offer students assignments and activities based on real-life situations or primaryresearch that engage them in reflective, data-driven problem-solving with no predetermined right answers. For example, assignment on “Role of stress in the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension”, “Prevalenceand prevention of Sickle Cell Anemia in Sahu Community of Chhattisgarh”.

Participative learning: Participative learning provides students with an opportunity to gain professionalvalues, knowledge, and skills. Therefore, the students are encouraged to participate in the seminars, conferences and workshops organized by our and other institutes. Through this, student interacts with thescientific community to gain updated knowledge. They are encouraged to interact with the resourcepersons to clear their doubts. Also, students are motivated to actively participate in the health camps, blooddonation camps, health awareness rallies, tree plantation programmes etc., so that they can gain a deeperunderstanding of the meaning of civic responsibility and prepare themselves for serving the community.

Problem solving learning: Problem-solving is the ability to identify and solve problems by applyingappropriate skills systematically. It involves three basic functions: Seeking information, Generating newknowledge and Making decisions. As mentioned in the experiential learning, in the assignment on “role ofstress in the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension”, the students has been directed to provide thesolutions for the same. Similarly, in another assignment “Prevalence and prevention of Sickle Cell Anemiain Sahu Community of Chhattisgarh”, the students ate directed to suggest the remedies to prevent the

2.5 Evaluation Process and Reforms 2.5.1 Reforms in Continuous Internal Evaluation(CIE) system at the institutional level

Response:

Evaluation of performance is an integral part of Teaching and Learning process. As a part of soundeducational strategy, the institution has established the Assessment Committee to evaluate theeffectiveness of various measures taken to improve quality of Teaching and Learning. Bloom’sTaxonomy is adopted to determine the level of subjects, COs and attainment. Various modern teaching-learning techniques are adopted for the uplift ment of the students and for the achievement of COs andPOs. These methods include: Design thinking, Focused group study, Interactive classrooms, Simulationclasses/labs, Problem based learning, Flipped classroom, Real life examples, Web based learning,Presentations, Assignments, Quizzes, Group discussions, Brainstorming etc. Moreover, remedial classesare conducted for the students failed in any one of the semester theory papers. Direct and Indirect methodsare implemented for the assessment of effective curriculum delivery and outcomes of teaching-learningprocess. Direct assessment is done by faculty through Sessional Exams (two per semester covering allCOs), Assignments (at least four per semester covering all COs), Quizzes (MCQs pattern; at least one fromeach CO), Lab Practical (assessment based on the performed experiment and viva) and UniversityExamination (data used for the assessment of POs). Indirect assessment is done with the help of Rubricsi.e. performance indicators. Rubrics are developed by the assessment committee, which is used by thefaculty for the assessment students and their projects. Moreover, effectiveness of teaching-learning processis analyzed via feedback system by the assessment committee. The feedback forms are designed by theassessment committee. The feedback on the various parameters is taken from students twice in onesemester. First feedback is taken 1 month after commencement of semester and the feedback was analyzed, discussed during the faculty meeting and corrective action decided and implemented. This helps currentstudents taking the course. Second feedback is taken at the end of the course wherein feedback is sought oncourse outcomes, coverage of relevant topic beyond syllabus, laboratory experiences and student centricefforts along with seeking their suggestions for the improvement of the course, content and delivery. Theanalysis of students feedback and faculty self-appraisal is done by assessment committee is done duringtheir meeting. The analysis is extensively discussed especially on the weaknesses found in specific POsattainment. Based on which, corrective measures are devised. In case some recommendations oflaboratories or resources are identified, the principal take the recommendation to the management fortaking actions for providing the same. The questionnaire is designed on a 5-point scale, wherein 2.5 isindicated as middle point. Score against each PO, if is less than 2.5, is considered “not met”. In case, thePO score is higher than 2.5, it is considered as “satisfactory”. All not met POs are looked into its reasonsand in-depth assessment is made to take corrective actions either on part of content delivery, contentcoverage or teacher’s efficiency. Principals and teachers take appropriate corrective measures and in casecontent coverage is the problem, the same is informed to the affiliating university.

Transparency in the internalevaluation process is ensured by giving the answer scripts of internal examination to the students forreview. If still there is any grievance, it will be addressed through a three-stage mechanism

First Stage – At the concerned teacher level: By providing to the students with the answer bookscorrected by the teacher, so as to enable the student to clear their doubts, if any.Second stage – At HOD level: In case the student is not satisfied with the concerned teacher atstage one, he / she can approach the head of the concerned department who is required toexamine the case in detail and make suitable changes if warranted.Third stage – At the Principal level: In case the student is aggrieved with the decision even at theHOD level also, he / she can appeal in writing to the Principal who in turn nominates a Professor /Associate professor to look in to the grievance. The faculty so nominated, in turn, will enquire intothe matter critically to do justice to the student. The outcome is explained to the student withreasons and that decision is final.

In case of University examinations, the students against whom U.F.M. cases are registered in the finalexaminations are dealt with justifiably. Materials of cheating are confiscated and their records aremaintained. The students are given opportunity to clarify their positions. The university constitutes acommittee to look into the matter and appropriate measures are taken judicially, transparently and withinthe time limit.

There is a provision for revaluation of the answer sheets. The students who are not satisfied with the marksgiven can apply for revaluation. If the students are not satisfied even with the revaluation, they can get thephotocopies of their answer copies by depositing the stipulated fee and they can have their answer sheetsvaluated on their own and find out the actual position.

2.6.2 Attainment of program outcomes, program specific outcomes and course outcomes areevaluated by the institution

Response:

We follow outcome based learning and evaluation method as per the pattern of Washington Accord 1989.First, faculty members prepare COs for the each course and set the attainment level for each CO based onprevious result and level of difficulty. Each faculty member have studied the POs thoroughly, andmapped them with COs as correlation level 1 (low), 2 (medium) or 3 (high). The mode value of CO-PO correlation was used for correlating Course with PO. For evaluation of COs well defined statistical technique (excel spread sheet) is used to map the questions with the COs and POs.Since the question wise result of students from the university semester examination are notavailable, analysis of CO with questions is limited to internal examinations, assessment of labpractical, assignments and quizzes only.

Attainment of COs:

Following methods are adopted for recording the attainment of COs of all courses with respect to setattainment levels

I. University examination:

Page 38/94 12-03-2018 11:34:10

Page 39: SELF STUDY REPORT · To produce dynami, competent and qualified manpower for healthcare services, awareof social, environmental, ethical responsibilities and capable of creating new

Self Study Report of Rungta College of Pharmaceutical Science and Research

Attainment Level 1: If 50-59% students get 60% marksAttainment Level 2: If 60-74% students get 60% marksAttainment Level 3: If 75-100% students get 60% marks

II. Internal assessment:

Attainment Level 1: If 50-59% students attain the average of set target level of COsAttainment Level 2: If 60-74% students attain the average of set target level of COsAttainment Level 3: If 75-100% students attain the average of set target level of COs

Further, 80% weightage was given to University examination and 20% weightage was given to the internalassessment. Example: 80% of University level (assume attainment level is 3) + 20% of Internal level(assume attainment level is 3) = 2.4 + 0.6 = 3.0 (COs attainment level)

Attainment of POs:

Following method is adopted for recording the attainment of individual PO. The attainment was calculatedby multiplying the average % of students attaining COs with average level (1, 2 or 3) of that PO divided by100.

For example,

Average % of students who attained COs = 82%

Average of all COs for PO1 = 3

PO1 attainment = 3 x 82 ÷ 100 = ~2.5

computing equipment, etc.

Response:

The institute adheres to the various regulations passed by the bodies such as AICTE, PCI, NBA,Directorate of Technical Education, Govt. of Chhattisgarh and the affiliating University (ChhattisgarhSwami Vivekanand Technical University, Bhilai). The institute considers it as a primary duty to create themost essential infrastructure as prescribed for various programmed by their respective regulatory bodies. As a result of this policy the institute has never received any ‘deficiency’ in the inspections done by theregulatory authorities.

At the next level the institute makes a perspective plan looking at the future expansion and present specialneeds. Adequate funds are reserved for such expansions and utilized whenever needed.

The most critical aspect of the infrastructure is the technology dependent facilities, which tend to getobsolete at quite a fast pace, the institute has a policy to regularly update its technology dependentinfrastructure, so that the teaching and learning are not affected due to absence of latest technology.

The next aspect of the policy is maintaining the physical facilities always in a working condition andreduce the downtime to near zero. This helps in keeping infrastructure in a ready-to-use mode and wellmaintained at all times.

New courses or increased intake or changed curriculum demands the introduction of new laboratories andtechnological innovations. The requirements are discussed at the departmental level first, then heads ofdepartments, and the management.

The institute has spacious class rooms and tutorial rooms (08+ 06) with good seating infrastructure andwell ventilated. Average area of each class room is 875 sq.ft. Laboratories are well equipped and spaciouswith appropriate seating arrangement. Average area of each laboratory is about 1200 sq.ft. Everydepartment is provided with a staff room equipped with computer and internet connectivity. Centralcomputing facility with about 60 computers. Internet connectivity is provided to all computers. 2. Objectives of the Practice:

To inculcate soft skills and ability to face interviewsTo inculcate entrepreneurial skillsTo promote industrial exposure

3. Context:

Most of the students of RCPSR are from rural area and studied in Hindi medium schools till HSC.Therefore, it was of utmost importance to provide them training regarding English communication, personality development and entrepreneurial skills. Chhattisgarh state is deprived of pharmaceuticalindustries, and therefore, necessary support has been provided to the students so that they can get industrialexposure.

4. The practice:

Soft skill classes have been conducted for our students to improve English communication andinterview skills. Many students have been interested in establishing their pharmacy shop after thegraduation as this region especial rural areas have acute shortage of medicals, and therefore, emphasis has been given to enhance their entrepreneurial skills. We arrange industrial visit for UG students and encourage PG students to do a part of researchwork in the pharma industry so they get an understanding of the functioning of the industry.

5. Evidences of Success:

Employability of students has been improved.

The number entering into entrepreneurship have also improved over the years. Our students have been visited to industries and understand various aspects of large-scale pharmamanufacturing, packaging, quality control and regulatory guidelines.

6. Problems Encountered and Resources Required:

In soft skill classes, initially Hindi medium students face problems in understanding the fluent Englishlanguage of the experts. We convey the same to the experts to take necessary measures and make theclasses easy for Hindi medium students.
