Sentron Busway Overview

SENTRON BUSWAY FOR GLOBAL POWER DISTRIBUTION APPLICATIONSBuilding on a solid foundation of advancedproducts for the construction industry, the Siemens Sentron name is recognizedworldwide as synonymous with quality andconsistent performance. Sentron Buswaydelivers impressive features and benefitsthat make it ideal for many types of indus-trial and construction implementations.

Engineered to ensure the safe and efficientdistribution of power in industrial, commer-cial and institutional environments world-wide, Sentron ampacities range from 225Ato 5000A UL and 100 to 5000 amps IEC.Thanks to an innovative design, you benefitfrom labor-saving installation and a flexible, compact bus system that is an ideal fit formost applications. In fact, Sentron Buswayis one of the industry’s least labor-intensivesystems.

Sentron Busway installs with minimalhardware and often costs less than cableand conduit installations. The lightweightaluminum housing acts as an integralground, joint stacks connect with spliceplates featuring a single-bolt design, andbus plugs and cable tap boxes offer theindustry’s largest wire bending space. An optional 200% neutral within the busbar housing accommodates harmonicscommon in today’s power systems.

Exemplifying the spirit of continuing innovation, Sentron Busway utilizes a state-of-the-art epoxy insulation system, which isapplied using an electrostatic spray processfor optimal insulation integrity.

And, of course, Sentron Busway is certifiedto design standards worldwide, includingUL, NEMA, IEC, CSA, VDE and BS.

See page 34 for installation and applicationinformation.

Siemens Busway Business uses industryleading technology in all its manufacturingprocesses. From bus bar fabrication toElectrostatic Spray Epoxy insulation, all theprocesses used in the manufacturing ofSiemens Sentron Busway are electronicallycontrolled to provide for consistent, highquality results, making Sentron Buswayproducts best in its class.

HOUSINGAll Sentron Busway lines are made with analuminum housing. This lightweight totallyenclosed, non-ventilated housing resistsrust and other elements, distributes heataway from the conductors, and provides anexcellent ground path. The totally encloseddesign also eliminates the need for deratingof the system regardless of installationorientation. The housing is covered with anelectrostatically applied light gray ANSI 61polyester urethane powder paint that isscratch resistant and has a 1,000-hour saltspray resistance rating.

CONDUCTORSThe conductors have a compact construc-tion and can be configured as 3-phase 3-wire, 3-phase 4-wire or 3-phase 4-wirewith 200% neutral. The conductors may beordered in copper (98% conductivity) oraluminum (58% conductivity). The optional200% neutral helps to handle harmonicconditions that may exist. This system isespecially useful with discharge lighting(fluorescent) and computer installations. This will help to minimize overheating andprolong the life cycle of your power distri-bution equipment.

GROUNDSentron Busway offers ground options tomeet your specifications: standard integral aluminum housing ground and optionalinternal grounding bars. It is also availablewith optional isolated ground which isespecially useful in applications where aclean ground is needed. For completeground bar details refer to page 4.

PLATINGAll bus bars are electroplated with tin. This unique tin plating provides excellentconductivity and resists outside elementsfrom attaching to the bars. Optional silverplating is also available.

INSULATIONSentron Busway is insulated with an EpoxyPowder Coating system designed bySiemens Engineers, Epoxy SystemEngineers and Epoxy Powder Specialists, specifically for Siemens Busway products.

The Siemens exclusive Electrostatic Sprayinsulation process produces an even appli-cation of Epoxy powder over the entireconductor bar. This is further enhanced bythe inline filter process and magneticseparator that helps to eliminate contami-nants common to fluidized bed systems. The electrostatic application also provides abetter coating consistency than that of theolder fluidized bed process. The combina-tion of electrostatic spray and lower oventemperatures produces a consistentcoverage with fewer impurities andpinholes in the insulation. The lower oventemperatures reduce the risk of barannealing, which affects the overall qualityof the system.

Sentron Busway insulation provide Class B,130°C insulation meeting UL857, IEC 439requirements.

JOINT STACKEach Sentron Busway piece is shipped witha joint stack and joint covers installed atone end of the busway and a shipping endprotector at the other end. The joint stackconnects with splice plates that feature asingle bolt design and a special, torqueindicating, double headed break-off bolt. This eliminates the need for torquewrenches and assures proper torque atinstallation of 55 ft.-lbs.(68 N-m). When the proper torque value is achieved, the top bolt head will shear off. Each jointstack allows for +/- .625 inches (15.8mm)adjustability at each joint. Over adjustmentis prevented by the joint covers, which willonly allow a .625 inch (15.8mm) adjust-ment when the knockouts on the jointcover are removed. It is possible to removeany joint connection assembly to allowelectrical isolation or physical removal of abusway length without disturbing adjacentbusway lengths. Isolation joint stacks areavailable and used to electrically isolate abusway section(s) within a busway run. For easy visual identification, isolation jointstack assemblies are painted white.

PLUG-IN OPENINGSSentron Busway offer plug-in style buswaywhich feature plug-in openings rated forfinger safety to IP2X in accordance with IEC529 and BS EN 60439-1, -2 and BS EN60529.

Each plug-in opening has a reversiblehinged dead front designed to protect thecontact surfaces from dirt, dust or moisture.Gasketing is used where applicationsrequire a splash proof (IP55) rating.

IP RATINGSSentron Busway is available in a variety of IPratings. Use the chart below to determinethe IP rating that best fits your applicationneeds.

Technical Data

Notes:1. For plug-in distributed loads, divide voltage

drop values by 2.2. To determine voltage drop line-to-neutral,

multiply line-to-line values by 0.577.3. Actual voltage drop for different lengths and at

loadings less than full rated current can be calculated using the formula:

Vd (actual) = Vd (table) x actual load x actual length (ft)rated load 100 feet

4. For 50 Hz, multiply reactance (X) by 0.85 and resistance values do not change. For 400 Hz, multiply reactance by 3.75 and multiply resistance by 1.4. Calculate new voltage drop: Vd = amps load x √3(Rcos θ + X sin θ) per 100 ft,

where cos θ = Power Factor.

5. For metric conversion R, X, Z values“in Ohms per meters Line to Neutral”R x .0328X x .0328Z x .0328

6. For metric conversion“Line to Line per meter at 25° C ambient in mV/A/m”(Vd 32.8) / A Divide Vd by 2 for distributed loads.

STRAIGHT SECTIONSSentron Busway can be ordered withAluminum or Copper bus bars. Aluminumbars are available in 225-4000 ampere sections. Copper bars are available in 225-5000 ampere sections. Sentron Buswayincludes an integral housing ground, and isavailable with an internal ground bar or an isolated ground bar in all ampere ratings.Sentron Busway housing is a four-piece aluminum design.

PLUG-IN SECTIONSSentron plug-in sections are designed withplug-in openings centered on 24 in.(610mm) intervals, and are located on bothsides of the busway for optimum utilization.Plug-in sections are available in standardlengths of 4 ft. (1.22m), 6 ft. (1.83m), 8 ft.(2.44m) and 10 ft. (3.05m). Sentron plug-in sections meet IP40 (indoor) and IP55(splash proof) requirements. One joint stackassembly is provided with each plug-insection.

RISER SECTIONSSentron Riser sections are designed withplug-in openings centered on 24 in.(610mm) intervals on one side of thebusway only. This eliminates unusable plug-in outlets in vertical applications. Riserbusway is available in standard lengths of 4ft. (1.22m), 6 ft. (1.83m), 8 ft. (2.44m) and10 ft. (3.05m). Sentron Busway elbows provide a simple, convenient method of changing the direction (left, right , up or down) of abusway run. Two elbow styles are offered:elbow stack and elbow section.

ELBOW STACKSAn elbow stack is a joint stack thatconnects two busway sections at 90degrees to one another (left, right, up ordown).

Key Features & Benefits:1) 50% reduction in user installed

hardware.2) Up to 50% reduction in weight aids

handling and installation. 3) Compact design facilitates installation

in tight areas.

FLATWISE ELBOW STACKS Flatwise elbow stacks are used for left andright directional changes when the buswaysystem is mounted in the horizontal plane;bus bars run parallel to the floor. Thenameplate (NP) lies on the neutral side offlatwise elbow stacks, which is the side ofthe elbow that faces the floor.

Note: flatwise elbow stacks can be orderedas either right-hand (ESFR) orleft-hand (ESFL) to follow the same nomen-clature as an elbow section. Theconstruction is identical and interchange-able.

EDGEWISE ELBOW STACKS Edgewise elbow stacks create up and downdirectional changes. The nameplate andneutral side lie on the outside of the bendfor edge up elbow stacks. The nameplateand neutral side lie on the inside of thebend for edge down elbow stacks.

Note: edge up and edge down elbow stacksare not interchangeable.

FLATWISE ELBOW SECTIONS Flatwise elbow sections are used for leftand right directional changes when thebusway system is mounted in thehorizontal plane; bus bars run parallel tothe floor. The nameplate (NP) lies on theneutral side of flatwise elbows, which is theside of the elbow that faces the floor. Thejoint stack assembly may be moved to theopposite leg to change the orientation fromleft to right/right to left.

EDGEWISE ELBOW SECTIONS Edgewise elbow sections create up anddown directional changes. The nameplateand neutral side lie on the outside of thebend for edge up elbows. The nameplateand neutral side lie on the inside of thebend for edge down elbows. The joint stackassembly on edgewise elbows can not bemoved in order to change orientation fromup to down/down to up.

Sentron Busway elbow sections are shippedwith a joint stack assembly on one end fordirect connection to the busway system.

For both edgewise and flatwise elbowsections the sum of the two legs may notexceed 10 ft. (3.05m). See drawings forminimum dimensions. Custom lengths areavailable.

Tees are used to simplify directional andplane orientation changes in a buswaysystem. Tees can make 90° bends left orright, and up and down along the buswayrun. All tees are supplied with two jointstack assemblies.

FLATWISE TEES Flatwise tees are used to create left andright branches. The nameplate (NP) lies onthe neutral side of the tee.

EDGEWISE TEES Edgewise tees are used to create branchesthat stem up or down from the busway run.The nameplate and neutral side lie towardthe floor on edge down tees while thenameplate and neutral side lie toward theceiling on edge up tees. Edgewise tees arehoused in a special box enclosure toprovide rigidity and shield against dirt anddust.

IN-LINE DISCONNECT CUBICLESCubicles provide a means of mountingswitches or circuit breakers where powerfeeds to or pulls from the busway system. When bolted connections are preferred, cubicles may be used in place of plug-inunits. Cubicles can also be used at ampereratings that exceed standard plug-in unitratings. Modifications to cubicles can bemade in order to accommodate key inter-locks, ground fault detector systems andpower monitoring systems.

EXPANSION FITTINGSExpansion fittings accommodate for expan-sion and contraction of a busway run. In order to compensate for the difference inthe coefficient of expansion between thecopper/aluminum bus bars and thealuminum housing, an expansion fittingmust be used. Expansion fittings areinstalled in the center of long busway runs, where both ends of the run are held in permanent, fixed positions or where abusway run crosses an expansion joint

of a building. Additionally, NEMA recom-mends the use of expansion fittings whenthe run exceeds 200 ft. (608m). Expansionfittings allow for a +/- 2 in. (50.8mm)movement along the length of the buswaysystem.

FUSED REDUCERSThe NEC (Art. 368-11) requires overcurrentprotection when busway systems arereduced in ampacity. A fused reducer isused to reduce the allowable ampere ratingin those sections of the busway that do notrequire a higher rating (i.e. at branch circuitjunctures).

NON-FUSED REDUCERSNon-fused reducers are used in conjunctionwith the following exception to the

NEC (Art. 368-11): "For industrial establish-ments only, omission of overcurrent protec-tion shall be permitted at points wherebusways are reduced in ampacity, providedthat the length of the busway having thesmaller ampacity does not exceed 50 ft.and has an ampacity of at least equal toone-third the rating or setting of theovercurrent device next back on the line, and provided that such busway is free fromcontact with combustible material." Specialjoint stack connections are provided for

non-fused reducer connections. Consult factory for specific design guidelines.

PHASE-ROTATION FITTINGSPhase-rotation fittings can be used whenthe application requires a phase rotation inthe power supply. Phase rotation fittingscan be ordered for "phase and ground","phase only" and "ground only" rotations.

SERVICE HEADSService Heads are used to connect buswayto a service entrance. In the SentronBusway line, 3-single phase service headsand 3-phase service head connections areavailable. The standard service entranceconnection is the 3-phase service headwhich consists of one service head for allthree phases. 3-single phase service headsconsist of three heads – one for each phase– and may be used to meet the require-ments of certain applications. To ensureease of installation of incoming cables, bothtypes of Sentron service heads areconstructed so that the lugs face the Glasticbottom of the box. The Glastic bottomprovides insulation and protection to theincoming cables.

HANGERSA complete offering of hangers is availableto support Sentron Busway in both verticaland horizontal applications. Standardtrapeze hangers and single drop rodhangers support Sentron Busway inhorizontal applications; both hangers aredesigned to be hung on 10 ft. (3.05m)centers, however, additional hangers maybe used if structural requirements mandate their use. The contractor mustsupply drop rods to complete assembly forboth single drop rod and trapeze hangers. Spring hangers and floor supporthangers must be used to provide securemounting of the busway run in verticalapplications. Spring hangers counter theweight of the busway on each floor andalso compensate for minimal buildingmovement and thermal expansion.Maximum distance between springhangers may not exceed 16 ft. (4.88m).When ordering 18 ft. (5.49m) floor toceiling height assemblies, intermediatesupport hangers are necessary.

PANELBOARDS AND METER CENTERMODULESMeter center modules provide a quick and convenient method of connecting tometering devices for both commercial and residential applications.

Meter center modules connect at the side of abusway run to special joint stacks; thesespecial joints can be added to existing buswayto accommodate meter center moduleconnections. When using multiple meteringstacks, main disconnects are available if thesystem reaches the 6 circuit rule (see meteringbulletin for further information).

Panelboards are installed at special engineeredjoint stacks consult factory for dimensions.

INSTALLATIONIn preparation for installation of yourbusway system, it is important to familiarizeyourself with the following installation publi-cations:

• General Instructions For Handling, Installation, Operation and Maintenance of Busway Rated 600 volts or Less (NEMA Standards Publication BU1).

• Storage, Installation and Maintenance Instructions for Sentron Busway (31-9918-01)

These publications should be read throughthoroughly and used as reference duringinstallation to ensure proper installationprocedures. All equipment should beinspected upon delivery. If the busway is notinstalled immediately, it should be stored ina clean, dry location. Factory supplied recorddrawings as well as installation tools shouldbe accessible in preparation for installation.

UL 1479 FIRE RATED INSTALLATIONSSentron Busway has been tested in accor-dance with UL 1479 and offers a certifiedtwo hour fire rating for gypsum wallboardconstruction, and a three hour fire ratingfor concrete slab or block penetrations. These ratings were achieved using standardbusway installed with SpecSeal® sealantfrom Specified Technologies Inc. The SpecSeal® fire stop system providessuperior performance at the industry’slowest installed cost. Sentron is the firstbusway system to achieve a fire rating forgypsum wallboard construction.

MEASURINGCritical to the success of any busway installa-tion is the layout and accurate measuring ofthe busway. First and foremost:

Select a route for your busway that willrequire the fewest fittings and themaximum number of 10’ (3.05m) sections. It is important that the busway system bedesigned to meet the requirements of theNational Electric Code, Article 368.There are a number of techniques that maybe used to ensure an accurate measurementbefore purchasing and installing the busway. The following tools will berequired during layout and measuring:• 100’ (30.48m) tape measure• Measuring Stick• Chalkline• Plumb Bob• Marker(A laser distance measuring device may beused to speed the measuring process).

Recommended Measurement Steps1. Using systems requirements for

amperage, voltage, and conductors, determine the physical size of the busway. This is important when setting minimum clearances from walls, columns, ceilings and other obstructions.See page 34 for minimal clearances

2. Prior to any layout, review the complete area to determine the best location for the run. Special attention needs to be given to existing equipment such as plumbing, HVAC, steel columns, beams and permanent structures.

3. Measure all dimensions from fixed points such as columns, walls, floors and ceilings.

4. Make a preliminary sketch showing proposed busway routing, elevations and obstructions. Be sure to show all floor and wall locations including thickness.

5. Where plug in devices are being used, be sure to allow for proper operation clearances. See dimensional requirementsshown in the bus plug section of this publication.

MAINTENANCEIn order to maintain system performance, itis necessary to perform regular maintenanceon your busway system. Siemens Storage,Installation and Maintenance Instructions, and NEMA Publication BU1.1 should beused as a guide to proper maintenanceprocedures. Routine maintenance of yourbusway system will increase its life andperformance.

36

APPLICATIONS200% Neutral OptionPower System Harmonics are created bynumerous types of non-linear loads whichare often very high in harmonic content. The harmonics generated create problemsin electrical systems and equipment. Thepresence of non-linear loads can result inoverheated neutrals and lead to deteriora-tion of equipment performance and areduced equipment life cycle. In order toprevent such problems from occurring, theComputer and Business EquipmentManufacturers Association (CBEMA) recom-mends that neutrals be oversized to at least173% of the ampacity of the phase conduc-tors to prevent problems. Sentron Buswayoffer two fully rated bus bars, thereforeproviding twice the current carrying surfaceas the phase bars. Each neutral bar is platedwith the same tin plating and insulated withthe same electrostatically applied epoxyinsulation as the phase bars. This 200%neutral capacity helps prevent overheatingcaused by non-linear loads.

Isolated GroundSentron Busway is available with an optional50% isolated ground. This isolated groundprovides a clean ground path for highfrequency signals coming through theground. This option is very useful in applica-tions where there are computers ordiagnostic equipment. The isolated groundoption is often used in hospitals and highertechnology industry applications.

SERVICESPower II Fit Final Connection ProgramA "final connection" section is a length ofbusway inserted into a run of busway afterthe major portion of the busway run hasbeen installed. This allows the release of themajority of the busway run long before thefinal dimensions are known. Final Connection pieces will be shipped fromSpartanburg, SC within 5 working days afterthe receipt of the Final Connection order(maximum 5 pieces, IP40 & 55 only). FinalConnection pieces must be identified attime of original order release with approxi-mate date of Final Connection order. FinalConnection order form should be faxed oremailed to Busway Customer Service. Forprogram details and Final Connection orderform, refer to Bulletin BUFL or contact yourlocal Siemens sales office.

Cable/Conduit ConversionThe next time a job calls for valueengineering, consider using Sentron Busway as an alternative to cable andconduit and save your customer valuabletime and money. Our cable/conduit comparison program generates reports with your specific job parameters and allows you to see a side-by-side totalinstalled cost comparison between SentronBusway and cable and conduit. Consult yourlocal Siemens sales office for more informa-tion and a copy of the software. After initialinstallation, program updates may bedownloaded from our web site:www.sea.siemens.com.

Siemens PPOOWWEERR IIII FFIITT Program compensates for dimensional deviations that may result in busway layouts. Specific dimensions on straight sections and/or elbows may be left out of factory released drawings. After the busway run has been installed, finalmeasurements are taken and sent to the factory.

The PPOOWWEERR IIII FFIITT Program can save you both time and money by eliminating uncertainty in busway measurements. When you take advantage of the POWER II FIT Program, your busway runs fit exactly the first time, eliminating incorrect pieces and costly reordering time.

The PPOOWWEERR IIII FFIITT Program will benefit you when you are uncertain of exact dimensions on long busway runs and when difficult contour situations require special attention.
