project description

In the beginning of the last century, group of modernist architects gathered together under the name of CIAM (Congrès International d’Architecture Moderne,) and discussed the future of city planning and architecture. In this historic congregation, lead by Le Corbusier, they envisioned a city crowned by flat roofs with accessible gardens on top. Through out the century, the idea of

roof gardens diminished due the high cost and labour, and remained only as a privilege of wealthy living. Nevertheless, today’s barren roofs were never the intention of modernist movement. The modern low-slope roofs are waste of usable spaces, highly deficient in energy consumption and aesthetically displeasing.

The architecture of today demands highly efficient building system that reduces and reuses energy. Engineers, architects and scholars studied and developed technologies to make efficient green roof system that will reduce the energy consumption with ease of installation. It is also the effort of municipality, which initiated green roof by law with significant funding. Today, green roofs are this close to be on the rooftop. As a retrofit project, it is a considerable idea to upgrade an aging building transformed into a sustainable architecture. Green roof retrofit will benefit the environment, as well as the financial expenditures.

*The new ILLC greeen roof is covered with wood decking and metal grating on top of thevegetated roof, which gives more flexible accessibility while still maintaining the growth of plants.

The construction of overhang canopy is an open concept shelter. Instead of just being on the rooftop, this will give more enclosed cafe-like atmosphere. The Intention is to provide a more friendly and accommodating space to the users.

project description

Streets in downtown vividly show the flow of energy. Traffic and pedestrian flow is intangible thing however give a life to the city. These movement mostly happen on the street and makes all social economic activities possible. My design intent is to realize another flow of energy displayed in the façade of the building.

The concept “urban strip” is a continuation of street crawling on the surface of a wall, defining walls, floors and ceilings. This addition virtually mimics the nature of street, providing circulation and recess area.

Point tower residential condominiums have their positive impact on city by managing dense population in limited property line. However, it is known fact that buildable areas usually are too small. The method of realization of the concept of “urban strip” is to have a continuous strip to travel vertically as well as horizontally.

*Surrounding environment of 204 Bloor St. contributes the site by having numbers of museums, educational facilities and the most prestigious shopping attritions. It is such an advantageous area to nourish highly cultural/educational benefits.

Due to the size of given site, single use of the building does not meet the financial feasibility. A mixed use development, combining commercial and residential units, is highly advisable considering the density of downtown core Toronto.

project description

For more than half a century, parkdale theatre has been a land mark of the Parkdale Village from 1920s to 1970s. This long gone entertainment spot was an attraction to the visitors of the town, and a third place for the people in the area of Parkdale.

Being one of the artistic districts in downtown Toronto, Parkdale Village needed a facility that would activate events that are taking place in the area. The idea was to bring back the traditional landmark that has been forgotten to the present, and to incorporate 4 story multi-unit apartment.

Situated in the edge of downtown Toronto, Queen Street West, this project accommodates nine residential units, and a performing theatre that holds about 100 seats in total. This multi-use auditorium will initiate a meaningful attraction to the Parkdale Village, and provide venue for surrounding facilities, such as school, gallery, public library and acting school. The sculptural garden adjacent to the Theatre 1337 will also provide a public space for major events in Toronto, such as Toronto Film festival.

project description

High Bridge, a historical landmark tells the story of how water was once supplied to Manhattan. Being unused for many years, the integration of an arts and cultural facility seeks to revitalize the bridge and attract surrounding communities to the site through the celebration of art, history and water.

The experience of waterfalls will commemorate the history of the bridge while communicating where gallery displays and community programs are located. Water throughout the bridge is fed from the Harlem River. This provides the opportunity to incorporate a filtration system that returns clean water to the river through the waterfall feature.

*ART GALLERYSince the existing aqueduct is unused and left with out functioning, the space inside of the bridge is transformed as a Gallery. The roof top of the enclosure is overed with the water, allowing light penetration to address natural lighting.

*RESERVOIRThe last stage of water purification is displayed in a recreational reservoir area that provides the meditation and public gathering. The water body continues its route west where it eventually is released over the roofs of the new art facility.

*ART CENTEROn the top of the waterfall, the entrance to the Art Institution seats on the bridge. The entrance is comprise of cafeteria and overlooking deck hangs out from the cliff.

*PURIFICATIONA strip of water and water plants are displayed on the board-walk to exhibit the process of water purification. As a second stage of purifying system, this portion of the bridge will also act as a botanic garden.

project description

The competition R U Green was held in April 2009 under the coordination of prof. Margery Wrinker. Each team was given a task of planning a new landscape design for public square in Ryerson University. The biggest challenge was to accommodate the vibrant individuals into the space without a supervision.

The project Mosaic promotes kinetic spaces that could be re arranged by users. Each module itself is a shelter sized to fit maximum 5 people, and provides a seating place with an overhang shade. When these modules are arranged together, it becomes a enclosed space providing an outdoor classroom. These modules are on the predetermined track with four linear directions, in order to avoid possible crash between the modules,.

project description

Located at the gateway of Vancouver Island, Sydney is a small city famous for retirements and senior housing. The main concept of newly renovated restaurant was to use the existing condition of the previous commercial unit, and maximize the natural light into the restaurant.

Use of the wood was extensively considered as one of the characteristics of Western Canada. Different types of wood patterns were applied on the floor, wall and furniture. Small items, accessories and plants were also carefully chosen to keep the consistency of design.
