Random ThoughtsWhen we see news
papers, we see news about encroachments of lakes and ponds. Ancient Kings and Dukes constructed lakes and dug ponds for agriculture purpose and to quench the thirst of the common people. Lakes and ponds which were in lakhs dried up due to monsoon failure. People who migrated from the villages encroached the areas of the water sources. They built unapproved houses there. The politicians who are in power and strong politicians with money and muscle power to fetch votes in bulk, allowed them to encroach. Political parties strong men sold the dried up ponds and lakes. Governments also built flats for the poor, government office buildings and Bus stands by filling the areas of the lakes and even the areas of the rivers by filling them with debris. Who is responsible for all these? The people who encroach the dried lakes and ponds and the political leaders are the culprits for this situation and they are totally responsible for the diminishing water bodies.
Nature, a man's invaluable wealth given by the Almighty has been totally destroyed by man himself. Drinking water, the gift given by God which is necessary for the survival has been polluted and almost all through the year, people have to face water scarcity. India was once proud of having so many rivers, lakes and ponds in lakhs. they are shrunken
and occupied. Rivers disappear and only sewerways we see now a days.
The water body net work in the suburbs like Chitalapakkam, S e m b a k k a m , N a n m a n g a l a m , Kellkattalai, Kadaperi, M a d a m b a k k a m , H a s t h i n a p u r a m , pallavaram, Chromepet etc; are totally polluted with sewage and waste water discharge from the houses, hospitals, effluents of the industries let into the water bodies, dumping of the wastes collected from the houses, burying the dead animals in dried lakes, the public using these water bodies as toilets. In the suburbs storm water drains were constructed without proper planning. People connecting the pipes of their houses to these drains for letting out grey water ( water used for washing ) and sewage. Even educated people let out sewage into these drains. The PWD officials fail to take steps to close the sewage outlets.
Rivers like cooum, Adayar , Vaigai , Bavani, Kollidam, Cauvery, Tamirabarini and Plar etc; are all highly polluted and have been made sewage ways. Much is written about saving the water bodies of the state. A recent book by an eminent Judge in which he expresses his concern how the government
officials ignore the court orders. The healthy water table has been totally spoiled. The authorities should execute a well planned and an integrated underground drainage system. If the remaining areas of the lakes and ponds are to be protected, the urgent need is the construction of an underground drainage system.
The government and the local bodies like the Panchayats and Municipalities have to seek the suggestions from experts like Mr. P . S u n d a r a m o o r t h y former Engineering Director of the metro water board and from the close aide Mr. Ponraj of our late President Sri. Abdul Kalam. In OMR and ECR regions, sea water intrusion was already cited by Sri. Swaminathan committee. Sri. P. Sundara-moorthy suggests a solution to treat waste water and use it again and to create a barrier for sea water intrusion and to recharge ground water. He cites the example of California, the water starved coastal city, orange city of the U.S., and how the above said solution has been implemented there. The treated water is of good distilled water quality. Blending this treated water with ground water and pumping at high pressure in to the bore wells dug along the coastal region, the
sea water intrusion is prevented. Sea water having high density due to salt content allows the less density pumped water flow inland under the ground and the ground water gets recharged. Thus the expert P.Sundaramoorthy gives a valid suggestion. Why not his suggestion be considered ?
An awareness should be created among the people about water management. Recycling the waste water is to be done. Encroachments are to be cleared. The used water (waste water) and sewage drained into the water bodies are to be stopped. During recycling of the used water, disease causing viruses are eliminated. The flooding of the streets during monsoons is to be stopped by carefully planning to divert the rain water for recharging the ground.
Since the elections are coming soon, atleast the authorities will wake up and consider the problems. A permanent solution for the prevention of water scarcity to be sought from experts. People should have the responsibility of saving water bodies and learn water management.
Unless the irresponsible citizens and the indifferent authorities realize, water scarcity will be a perennial problem. Quenchable thirst for water should not be made Unquenchable.
