The Social Issue Title: Seize One Life Objective: 1st Step to Eliminate Poaching Illegal wildlife trade has become one of the biggest black trade market that is earning millions of dollars through hunting. This means that hunting is expanding and many animals are being killed. Therefore, this social issue is to create the first step of eliminating illegal wildlife trade by creating the awareness of what's happening in today's situation of these endangered animals.

SEIZE ONE LIFE

Seize one life is an awareness to take down the first step of elimination towards poaching by pledging not to support the

demand drive of this illicit trade.

Even though Singapore is a fine country with strict social controls,

this is an issue that goes out to everyone. We hope after you read this issue, you will know what is happening to these endangered animals that human will driven

them into; extinction.

AMUR LEOPARD

Life Cycle: 25 - 30 Years

Amur leopard is a rare subspecies leopard that is known for the most beautiful fur. It has wider spaced rosettes and thicker black border spots that stands out more

compared to other subspecies.

TODAY’S STORY

only 40 Amur Leopards are saviouring in the wild

Page 6: Seize one life

The leopard is rarely found in cold or high-elevation environments and is best known in its more familiar home in the savannas of Africa, where populations are relatively stable.

The hairs of a leopard pelt is 2.5 cm in summer & replaced by 7 cm long ones in winter. their furs also changes to a light color in the winter and more reddish yellow in the summer. Amur leopards are much more unique than other subspecies by their widely spaced

rosettes and thicker black borders spots which is the reason why their are highly valuable.

In 1999, an undercover investigation team recovered a female and a male Amur leopard skin, which were being sold for US$500 and US$1,000 respectively, in the village of Barabashe. This suggests that there is a market for such products within the locality itself.

Agriculture and villages surround the forests where the leopards

5

live. As a result the forests are relatively accessible, making poaching a bigger problem than elsewhere. Not only for the leopards themselves, but also for important prey species, such as roe deer, sika deer and hare, which are hunted by the villagers both for food and hard cash.

AFRICAN RHINO

Life Cycle: Up to 40 Years

688 rhinos were being killed in 2012. Many believe that horns are

miracle cancer cure and a body detoxifier. however it is proven that horns contain components in hair,

fingernails and animal hooves.

AT THE RATE OF POACHING

60 rhinos are being killed monthly

While the two African rhino species, black rhino and white rhino are increasing in number, both species remain threatened by poaching. Thanks to vigorous conservation and anti-poaching efforts, some African rhino populations are now stable or increasing. However, poaching still occurs, and some populations remain very small and threatened. Very few African rhinos now survive outside of protected areas and sanctuaries.

Black Rhino: the species is usually restricted to areas within about 25km of water sources. Black rhinos can often be found in mud or

water wallows, where they cool themselves. Its skin color is yellow brown to dark gray. They usually have two horns, occasionally a third small posterior horn. The anterior horn is longer than the posterior, average of 50cm long. White Rhino: the animals tend to avoid the heat during the day, when they rest in the shade. They are usually active in the early morning, late afternoon and evening. Its skin color is slate grey to yellow brown. Compared to a black rhino, white rhino have a longer skull, less sharply defined forehead and a

10

more pronounced shoulder hump. They have almost no hair and two horns. The front horn averages 60 cm, but occasionally reaches 150 cm in length.

AFRICAN ELEPHANT Life Cycle: Up to 70 Years

If conservation action is not forthcoming, elephants may become locally extinct in some parts of Africa within 50 years. These tusks are made of ivory, highly valuable like diamonds. It is usually made for human enjoyment like piano keys, billard balls and craft displays.

11

Page 13: Seize one life

12

ACCORDING TO STATISTICS

more than 12,000 elephants were being poached yearly

Page 14: Seize one life

AFRICANELEPHANT’STUSKElephants continue to roam across Africa, but these magnificent beasts remain under threat from poaching and habitat loss.

African elephants are the world’s largest terrestrial animals. The trunk, an extension of the upper lip and nose, is used for communication and handling objects including food. Tusks, which are large modified incisors that grow throughout an elephant’s lifetime, occur in

13

both males and females and are used in fights and for marking, feeding, and digging.

African elephants have 2 opposing extensions at its end. If conservation action is not forthcoming, elephants may become locally extinct in some parts of Africa within 50 years.

The other notable feature of African elephants is their very large ears, which allow them to radiate excess heat.

Illegal Wildlife Trade It is considered to be one of the biggest black

market trade so far.

Page 18: Seize one life

17

It is estimated that it runs into hundreds of millions

of dollars

Page 19: Seize one life

18

There are certain places in the world where wildlife trade is particularly threatening. These areas are called “wildlife trade hotspots.” They include China’s international borders, trade hubs in East/Southern Africa and Southeast Asia, the eastern borders of the European Union, some markets in Mexico, parts of the Caribbean, parts of Indonesia and New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. While these

hotspots might be trouble areas at present, they also offer opportunities for great conservation success, if action and funds are well-focused. Wildlife trade alone is a major threat to some species, but its impact is frequently made worse by habitat loss and other pressures.Rhino horn, elephant ivory and tiger products continue to command high prices among consumers, especially in Asia. In

Vietnam, the recent myth that rhino horn can cure cancer has led to massive poaching in South Africa and pushed the price of rhino horn to rival gold. One of the most powerful tools for addressing illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade is persuading consumers to make informed choices. This includes the people buying the end product as well as shop-keepers, suppliers and manufacturers. WWF

actively discourages the purchase of certain wildlife goods. We encourage the production and purchase of sustainable wildlife goods such as those certified by the Marine Stewardship Council and Forest Stewardship Council. They works together with communities around the world, providing practical support to overcome poverty and help them use local wildlife in a sustainable way.
