DRAGOS CAMPUSLearning not only calls for motivation, but also inspiration. We build the new campus of İstanbul Şehir University in a distinguished neighborhood called Dragos that will allow the students work and live in a tranquil and motivational green space.

The Dragos Campus has a land area accommodating a convention center, a dormitory, exhibition areas, open and indoor spaces for social recreational and athletic activities all of which are easily accessible by several thousands of students every day. Dragos is a cheerful campus, on the shore of the Marmara Sea, with a view of the Princess Islands. It is equal in size to 60 football stadiums. In addition to the beauty of its location, it is also known for its easy access to the city center. On the crossroads between land and sea transportation, with its proximity to Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Dragos is located at the center of all transportation routes.

The Dragos Campus has a university area easily accessible to more than five thousand university students per day. Around this square, the convention center, exhibition areas, spaces for open-air events, social life spaces with artisanal production and training centers are located.

POLITICAL SCIENCE AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

How well do we know the running of politics, which directly affects our lives? What is the state? How do law and politics shape our lives?

Why do parties exist? Why do we vote? What part do civil society and the media have in politics? To what extent does the economy determine politics? Where do identities stand in the political system? Why are there wars? How are conflicts resolved? Why is international law important? Where is the international system heading? How do global issues affect our daily lives? Is Turkey’s international position changing?

These are some of the questions debated by the discipline of Political Science and International Relations. This discipline examines many issues, from the operation of states and local governments to international issues, from national politics to world politics, from cultural interactions to the political and social outcomes of economic crises.

With its academic staff of large international experience and its dynamic curriculum, the Department of Political Science and International Relations at İstanbul Şehir University invites students to the colorful world of politics and international relations. At our department, students can create their personal course schedule according to their own preferences. In addition, by participating in double major and minor programs, students will have the chance to obtain a second diploma/certificate; with our international agreements and the Erasmus Exchange Program, they will spend at least one semester abroad and acquire valuable international experience.

SOCIOLOGYDo cities have souls? Why do people get lonelier as cities grow larger? Is the information about our identity limited to what is written on our ID card? We always hear about it, what is this postmodernism? Why do some things become trendy? How was life before the internet and mobile phones? How are the conflicts within society resolved? How do organizations such as companies, states and NGOs operate? How do culture and politics influence one another? Why are some people religious, some nationalist, liberal or socialist? How do religions and ideologies shape our attitudes and values, or even the economy? How do civilizations rise and fall? For students looking for answers to important questions such as these, İstanbul Şehir University Department of Sociology will be the right address.

HISTORYEvery person by nature is partly historian. Every day we investigate our past and rebuild it. Whether we want it or not, history waits on its toes. In our minds constantly busy with time and space coordination, we feel the unavoidable existence of the past. The past never passes; it is as lively as today and tomorrow and lasts longer. History is a way of thinking we cannot escape.

In the last century, history has become as colorful as rainbow; now, that boring course taken in high school is history. Limited approaches, with the history of the rulers, have opened to the history of the ruled. Until the history of everything is written, that is, until eternity, we need history. Yes, every person is a historian by nature; however only the best turn this into a craft and a profession. İstanbul Şehir University Department of History gives its students this opportunity.

The Department of History at İstanbul Şehir University embraces interdisciplinary and comparative approaches. We offer courses in various subfields of Turkish-Ottoman history and world history. We pay attention to the new tendencies in Turkish and world historiography. We greatly value the contact between history and social sciences. We consider it important to have a literary writing style as well as familiarity with the method and resources of history. As much as we search for the universal, we are also full of zeal for the local. Although the methods created in the world at large in historical interpretation provide a framework, which is not to be neglected, we are aware of our responsibility to develop local and distinctive methods of historiography and include them in general historiography. With its powerful academic staff and its distinguished students, İstanbul Şehir University Department of History claims to make a unique contribution to the historiography in Turkey.

To solidify their differences our students will be able to participate in double major and minor programs. Within the framework of international agreements and the Erasmus exchange program they will have the chance to spend at least one semester abroad and acquire international experience.

TURKISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

Turkish Language and Literature takes its breath from a large spectrum, from Fuzulî to Orhan Veli, Ahmet Mithat Efendi to Orhan Pamuk, Mevlana to Ece Ayhan, Mihrî Hatun to Adalet Ağaoğlu, Namık Kemal to Elif Şafak, Şeyh Galip to Gülten Akın, Yaşar Kemal to Murat Uyurkulak, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar to İhsan Oktay Anar, Vartan Paşa to Haldun Taner, Nazım Hikmet to Sezai Karakoç, Necatî to Cemal Süreya. Both with the other literatures of the world and within the diversity of our own literature, the togetherness and diverseness of histories, geographies and civilizations is reflected in words, transformed to words. For those who wish to research the mysteries of this reflection and transformation and look for clues to our existence and identity, Turkish Language and Literature offers a large and creative field.

The Department of Turkish Language and Literature at İstanbul Şehir University aims to offer a perspective which gives an awareness of the rich treasure of Turkish language and literature and tries to understand what language and literature mean both in history and in the conditions of the present. We offer a curriculum which shows not only the importance of discussing literature in its universality, nationality and locality, but also the significance of literature in understanding society, history, philosophy, politics and psychology. In addition, investigating what literature means in the light of other disciplines is also among our primary concerns. Although our department focuses on Turkish language and literature, we have a comparative approach, which pays attention to the experiences of other literatures.

Our aim was to create a formation where, in analyzing the literature of the Ottoman period, Arabic, Persian, Urdu and Jagatai literatures are also treated, where in analyzing the literature of the modern period, along with Western literatures, literatures with alternative modernization experiences such as Iranian, Greek, Japanese, Kurdish, Armenian, Arabic, Indian, Urdu, Latin American literatures are also taken into consideration.

PHILOSOPHYThere was philosophy on earth, when no discipline which is taught at the universities as a “field of science” has not occurred at the scene of existence yet. Therefore, even though we can mention about the beginning of other disciplines, it is quite difficult to say where and when the philosophy began. Philosophy has a simultaneous history with the existence of human beings.

Defining philosophy is as hard as determining its history. How can you define such an embracing discipline? Ancient people would say that philosophy is “the struggle of human beings to reach the reality of the existence at their power”. In fact, we can say that there is nothing excluded in this definition. Is there any other concept as wide as “existence”? From the most tangible to the most abstract, from the most physical to the most metaphysical, everything is “existent” in a way.

Even though Philosophy has lost the quality of being a supreme discipline that embraces all other disciplines for about two centuries, it still maintains its privileged position among the other disciplines. This privileged position arises from the structure of philosophy determining the views of all the disciplines to their area of research which take either social entity or the nature as their research topic and determining their handling methods. When compared to the ancient times, we can say that even though philosophy’s area of interest of has been narrowed, its ambiguity and indefinable structure gained it the opportunity and means to penetrate in all the disciplines.

İstanbul Şehir University Philosophy Department has the mission of enabling the evaluation of philosophy in Turkey as a whole either with its history or with its disciplines and in this vein; it aims to become the address for a qualified education and international standards.

LAWThe need for qualified jurists in Turkey has become even more important in our day, due to the rapidly changing developments in social, economic and technological fields and the juridical problems put forward by them. The School of Law, which set off with the concern of producing responses to this need, looked for answers to the question “What kind of a law education?” in interviews conducted with academic jurists prominent in their fields, presidents of the Constitutional Court and Supreme Court, people of significant experience in juridical and administrative autocratic positions.

As a result of the interviews, a program has been prepared which will make a contribution to the establishment of the idea and ideal of law, which will, in addition to its theoretically based structure, in practice also enable the development of qualified jurists needed by the public and private sectors as well as the economic and financial markets. The School of Law, established to create a different educational content facing the problems of the Turkish juridical system and juridical education, aims to help cultivate jurists who have a command of professional knowledge, who are respectful to the notion of law and put forward the honor of the profession.

At the School of Law of İstanbul Şehir University, with internships at juridical and bureaucratic institutions, students will find the opportunity to improve their professional knowledge. In addition, with the curriculum prepared together with other disciplines of social science, they will have the chance to become law theoreticians. At the School of Law of İstanbul Şehir University, in addition to English, students will be able to learn a second foreign language. CINEMA AND TELEVISION

Imagine a world where creativity rules… Where job openings, project calls ask for the third eye and televisual instinct… Where academic and artistic productions require semantic intellect… Where would you go? What would you look for? Which areas would you concentrate on? We invite you to get to know us before taking any further steps.

Let us begin with our natural advantage: Our department is established in İstanbul, the most portrayed hometown of cinema and television in Turkey. Lived experiences and histories of/in İstanbul as well as their representations are an utmost part of our departmental mentality. Thus, we are well aware of the cultural and geographical multiplicity of needs and aim to provide know-how for a local as well as global understanding of visual media. Therefore, the academics in this department agree on resisting and balancing the one-way communication flow from the West to the East.

As the Department of Cinema and Television at İstanbul Şehir University, we see the media from a large perspective, as a social tool and multiple art form, which serves extra-sensory perception. The need for qualified communicators inclines day by day. Familiarity with world cinema, advanced visual and numerical literacy, intellectual depth, technical skills and operational literacy on both national and transnational cinema and TV industries are sophisticated, but pertinent demands awaiting young generations. We strive for facilitating our students as a team of panacea upon graduation from our department; they will be highly seeked as producers, directors, screenwriters, critics, copywriters, curators, researchers, reporters, editors, television programmers, new media specialists and visual communications designers.

We offer a curriculum that is in line with the dynamic and critical character of the media world and that hinges upon the theoretical as well as the practical. The research areas of our academic staff reflect a curriculum of variety without precedent, ranging from anthropology, new media, cultural studies, sociology of modernization to history and aesthetics of cinema and sociology of television. Our doors are open to young minds who seek aesthetic and experimental vision to interact with the new communication paradigm and visual construct, who insist / inquire and examine alternative research and job opportunities of the 21st century.

MANAGEMENTCan ten organized people be more powerful than a thousand disorganized people? What kind of a team should these ten people be? What duties should every individual in the team take on? What kind of an education should they receive for this? So how will these ten people take decisions together? How will they make it possible for the decision-making process to be fast, correct and acceptable to all the members of the team? Is the element that will maximize their contribution to the team money or benevolence? How will technology be used for this team’s success? How will the productions of the team be shared with the intended market in the best way? How will the team acquire superiority to similar teams in the same field? Students who have asked themselves this question at least once can know that they are good management candidates. Development begins with asking questions. Questions such as these are questions for which the discipline of management is looking for answers. Of course finding where the answers are as important as asking the questions.

At the Department of Management of İstanbul Şehir University, we share the answers to the fundamental questions in the business world. We promise to teach our students the point presently reached by the discipline of management with a global perspective without disregarding our local dynamics.

The College of Engineering and Natural Sciences (CENS) brings together two fields, which have been separated in most of the universities in Turkey: engineering and natural sciences. At our College, consisting of the departments of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering, the academic programs have been designed according to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABES) and European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).

In our day, when technological products are designed as a whole, from mobile phones that work like computers to energy- saving circuits and graphic processors, the boundaries between electronic and computer engineering are loosening. Similar to some of the best universities of the United States, such as MIT, Stanford, CalTech and UC Berkeley, İstanbul Şehir University has prepared flexible curricula to bring these two fields together.

In line with ŞEHİR policy, CENS adopts an interdisciplinary approach, and students have the chance to create their own academic programs according to the knowledge basis required by the systems in their imaginations and talents.

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING

It is very easy to find, buy and use any product sitting on a market shelf. However, that product’s presence on an easily accessible shelf, its freshness, quality and correct price entail a complicated and difficult process which must be designed, calculated and analyzed with great care. These processes named system design are developed and directed by industrial engineers. The industrial engineer’s duty begins with finding the raw materials for the product at the right place and time, and continues on to producing the product at the factory with high quality and low cost, pricing it and transporting it all the way to the consumer. The correct publicity for the product and the collecting of customer reviews for the product are also among the duties of the industrial engineer. Process management, which is part of industrial engineering’s areas of interest, is not limited to production or products that can be bought in markets. In all organizations that offer service (hospitals, banks/financial institutions, security institutions, energy distribution, transportation, logistics, various government/municipality offices, etc.), the design, development and management of the processes is necessary.

At the Department of Industrial Engineering, our students will be guided by an academic staff with over 200 scientific publications, over 20 new inventions and awarded research in addition to a rich industry and business world experience. Here, students will learn the subtleties of system analysis and design, production and resource planning, in addition to courses and lab work, with practical field studies students will acquire the capacities for effective communication and teamwork as well as professional knowledge.

SOCIOLOGY (MA)ŞEHİR-Sociology’s vision is based on the concept of the global articulation of a local perspective. It aims to creatively combine sound education with cutting-edge research, high academic standards with sensitivity to social issues as well as the global with the local. From this glocal perspective, its mission is two-fold: to offer its students an intellectually-satisfying and interdisciplinary education, and to produce sophisticated knowledge based on rigorous methods and original research. It thus aims to contribute to the accumulation of refined knowledge, instead of repeating what has already been produced. To this end, İstanbul Şehir University MA Program in Sociology offers a free research environment and a rich intellectual atmosphere where free thinking can flourish.

Combining small size with intellectual diversity, MA Program in ŞEHİR-Sociology makes it its priority to offer its students a wide range of

theoretical and methodological perspectives of its faculty, who are committed to student-centered education by working closely with students in small seminar settings and providing them with sound guidance. Areas of faculty interest include political sociology, historical and comparative analysis, everyday life, the sociology of culture and religion, social movements, economic sociology and organizations, social inequality, urban ethnography, ethnicity and nationalism, identity, gender and advanced statistics. The department is also committed to extend the range of scholarly exchange and courses offered each semester by hosting some of the leading sociologists from all over the world.

MA Program in ŞEHİR-Sociology also takes pride in being an integral part of ŞEHİR’s landmark graduate and undergraduate teaching program, one based on interdisciplinarity and diversity. In close collaboration with graduate programs in history, cultural studies, and modern Turkish studies at ŞEHİR, our program is dedicated to help students learn to think analytically about their society and to prepare them for a wide range of careers. Thus, on one hand, we offer a number of common courses with other programs, on the other hand, we encourage our students to take (elective) classes from all three of the above graduate programs. For graduation, the students are required to complete a minimum of 8 courses and 24 graduate credits. They are also required to write an MA thesis of reasonable length.

ELECTRONICS AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING

The Electronics and Computer Engineering (ECE) Master’s Program was designed for students with a background in electrical engineering or computer sciences. The experience of the past two decades have shown that complex systems from the small (smart cards, mobile phones) to the large (Internet, networked storage, server farms) can be only designed and developed by teams of electrical engineers and computer scientists, since they consist of hardware and software components that have to interact and cooperate with one another. Such systems are now the driving forces of our daily lives, from medical technology to Internet banking.

The aim of the ECE MS Program at ŞEHİR is to provide our graduates the necessary and sufficient scientific knowledge and technical skills, hardware and software design tools, and methodical approaches in hardware/software co-design. Our graduates will have in-depth knowledge and dexterity in design tools, and will be able to specialize not only in classical areas of electrical engineering and computer science, but also in mathematical, computational, physical, and life sciences.

CYBERSECURITY ENGINEERING (in Turkish)

MS in Cybersecurity Engineering has been designed as a program which will enable specialization on information systems security. The aim of the program is to learn, analyze and design algorithms and protocols enabling a controlled transmission, storage of and access to information at places where it is important and even vital while its protection is obligatory. Moreover, it is within the work areas of Cybersecurity Engineering to create policies and defense systems enabling resistance against cyber security (network security) attacks and cryptography attacks of institutions. The program launched by İstanbul Şehir University has been developed and is executed in cooperation with TÜBİTAK – BİLGEM, leading institution of our country relating information security.

DATA SCIENCEWith data playing a central role in advancing civilization, it is appropriate to say that “the data has become the new oil”. Data scientists are inquisitive: exploring, asking questions, doing “what if” analysis, questioning existing assumptions and processes. Rather than looking at data from a single source, a data scientist will explore and examine data from multiple disparate sources. The data scientist will sift through all incoming data with the goal of discovering a previously hidden insight, which in turn can provide a competitive advantage or address a pressing business problem.

In order to fully grasp the opportunities present in the current environment awash with data, our niche graduate program for Data Science is right on target. Our institutional partnership with IBM will help us better this new graduate program going forward. Besides systems and tooling support, enhancing class experience with guest lectures from IBM personnel expert in the areas pertinent to course content will make sure that practical implications and real problems to solve will always be thought of and taught up-front in the academia.
