Flex Points – Important Message

Opportunity To Turn in Expired Points If you have any expired Flex Points, (these would be all points that expired on 6-30-2019), you now have one more opportunity to turn them in.

Here are the instructions: Please read carefully!

If you have expired points in your possession, paperclip or rubber band them together and send via interoffice mail to Jen Thompson at MHC. She must receive them by Thursday, Sept. 26, no later.

There were a number of employees that turned in their points to Jen Thompson after the July 15 turn-in deadline. Those people need to reach out to Jen via email at [email protected] by Thursday, Sept. 26, and those points will then be honored.

If you still have expired points in your possession, that you did not hand in, you may send them to Jen Thompson by Sept. 26.

Points that you may have lost or “put in the washing machine” are still invalid.

You will receive Visa Gift Cards and/or Target Gift Cards as listed here. For every 6 points = one $25 Visa Gift Card Less than 6 points = $5 Target Gift Card for each point

This a one-time opportunity. If we do not have your expired points by Thursday, Sept. 26, you will not be able to redeem them.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at extension 5489.

Thank you.

September 12, 2019

It is interesting to me that the term “computer” was first recorded as being used in 1613 and was originally used to describe a human who performed calculations. This was the primary use of the term until the end of the 19th century.

As of this past June, the fastest computer in the world is at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN. It is called SUMMIT.

Summit is definitely NOT a desktop computer; it is the size of two tennis courts. It uses the electricity of a small city and takes 4,000 gallons of water per minute to keep it cool.

Summit has a top theoretical speed of 200 Petaflops. That was a new term to me. This massive computer can do 200,000 trillion calculations per second which makes it about a million times more powerful than the typical laptop!

Let me put that in perspective, a calculation that it would take Summit one minute to perform would take a very fast PC…almost a year to calculate.

This is all very interesting…you might say…but what does it have to do with Marklund and our mission (promise) to make everyday life possible for individuals with profound disabilities?

Our technology has drastically changed over the past 65 years since we were founded by nurse Claire Haverkampf in 1954 but no matter how many “upgrades” we may make to our technology it will always require caring people…to make our promise a reality.

Thank you for the care and dedication that you bring to those we serve…every day. We are blessed to have each one of you.

Gil

VOICE OF THE EMPLOYEE

FOLLOW-UP SURVEY

DATE: SEPTEMBER 16-22 FOR MORE INFORMATION, SEE BELOW:

This is a follow up to the February 2019 “Voice of the Employee” Survey. The purpose of this survey is to see how we are doing to better serve our employees. Marklund will conduct a follow-up survey September 16-22. Only employees who were eligible to take the survey in February 2019 will receive an email from [email protected] on September 16 with a link to complete the survey.

Once the surveys are completed, the answers will be grouped by category and the leadership team will work with these responses to update their action plans as needed. Gil Fonger, President and CEO of Marklund, will be presenting a brief synopsis of the survey results at the November All-Staff Meetings. We look forward to receiving your feedback! All regular employees of Marklund will be able to take the “Voice of the Employee” Survey in February of 2020.

ALL RESPONSES TO SURVEY ARE 100% ANONYMOUS

NEWS ON GRANTS RECEIVEDMarklund received a generous grant from the EFS Foundation of $6,600

to purchase a MOTOMed at MWC. The EFS Foundation, located in Elgin, has been a generous supporter of the Marklund Wasmond Center for the

last several years. The Foundation has helped fund a variety of equipment, including Airvo Machines and furnishings for the Elgin MDS classrooms.

A MOTOMed works like a stationary bike and has both foot pedals and hand cranks; a resident’s wheelchair can be positioned directly in front of it. It is a valuable piece of therapy equipment that helps residents improve range of motion, circulation, muscle tone and more! Marklund currently

has a MOTOMed at the Hyde Center (pictured at right). We are excited to be able to add this new equipment to the Wasmond Center too.
