questions in the 5 day Regional Math Competition. Nyla H. Placed 9th in the

Students visit from Changchun
Students from Changchun, capital of Ji Lin--a northern Chinese
province, visited West Hartford and were hosted by families from both high
schools and all three middle schools. During the visit, students had the op-
portunity to shadow their hosting students and attend
classes with them. It was a wonderful experience for both visiting and
hosting students and their families, thanks to the cultural exchange and the
activities organized by both families and schools. As always, West Hartford
residents proved to be gracious and warm hosts.
Thank you!

News from the Nurses - March 2017
We need your help!! We have noticed an increase in students coming to the health room not feeling well because they haven’t eaten breakfast. Time in the health room means time away from classes. We educate students on the importance of eating a well-balanced meal in the morning and remind them that there is breakfast in the school cafeteria every morning, starting at 7:30am. In case you didn’t know: All students can get breakfast in the cafeteria. If your student gets a free or reduced lunch, breakfast is free. Please do your best to make sure your children are eating before school so they can do their best throughout the day! Reminder to all Parents/Guardians:
We are seeing a number of students with general cold-like symptoms. It is often easier for students to get through their school day if they are medicated with over-the-counter cold/cough medication prior to school. Remember, the health room is NOT ALLOWED to give any medication to students without a doctor’s order, including over-the-counter medications. If a student needs to take any medication during school hours, please provide the Sedgwick nurses’ office with the medication and a copy of the Medication Authorization Form, which needs to be signed by a parent/guardian AND physician. Reminder to 6th grade parents/guardians: All 6th grade students must have a physical exam performed after July 1, 2015 and up to date vaccinations in order to enter 7th grade. The State of CT required vaccinations for 7th grade are:
Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap vaccine)
Meningitis (Menactra Vaccine)
Chicken Pox (Varicella vaccine #2)
If you are unsure if your child has already met these requirements, please contact the health room and we can let you know. Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have concerns regarding your child’s health.
Fifth grade parents and students are invited to Sedgwick for an Orientation/Information Session on Mon-day, March 13th or March 20st. Please join us on the following date assigned to your child’s current school:
March 13th – Parents and students currently attending Braeburn, Charter Oak and Webster Hill March 20st – Parents and students currently attending Duffy, Wolcott and eligible Smith students
You will have an opportunity to meet with several sixth grade teachers and our administration in the auditorium starting at 6:30 p.m. This night is for parents and students. If your child will be attending Sedgwick, they will have an opportunity to visit and tour our school during the school day with their cur-rent class later in the spring.
Grade 8-9 Transition
The transition process to Conard High School began in January. The following activities are included in the process:
School Counselors from Conard made presentations during an assembly on January 17th. Students were provided with a Conard High School’s Program of Studies book, information about overall high school graduation requirements and extra-curricular activities.
Presentations in January to students by Career and Technical Education, Music, Visual Arts, Performing Arts and World Language
Students registered for their 9th grade courses during the week of February 6th with counselors.
“Meet the Principal Coffee” - on April 6th @ 7:30 am (Before school and work) at Sedgwick. Parents are invited to meet Mr. Duarte (Principal of Conard) and members of the Conard School Counseling Department. Current Conard students will be in attendance to discuss the middle school/high school transition, student life at conard and engage in a question and answer session.
“ A Day in the Life” - Each team will spend a morning at Conard on a date to be determined in May. This small group visit will consist of a tour, panel discussions, and question and answer sessions with teachers, current 9th graders, coaches, club advisors, school counselors and administrators.
Please contact your child’s current counselor if you have any questions about the high school transition process.
Technology and Engineering
Students in Ms. Nagler’s 7th grade Technology and Engineering class have been using
their critical thinking skills to design and code Makeblock robots. The students
enthusiastically accepted the challenge of developing an obstacle course for their robots
to navigate. The robots were purchased this year thanks to the grant that my class
