SECTIONALISM
• Devotion to one section of the country instead of the whole country
NORTH• Center of industrial growth• Rivers provided water power for machines• Rivers were natural highways• Erie Canal• Steamboats & railroads invented before 1850• Immigrants land in NYC & Boston and
provided cheap labor• National bank rechartered• Tariffs increased in 1816
SOUTH
• Economy depended on farming• Cotton was #1 cash crop• Cotton gin increases production (Eli Whitney)• Need more land• Plantation class vs. slaves (distinct class
differences in the South)
WEST
• Agricultural (small farms)• More connected with North with new
transportation (i.e. canals, RR’s, & roads)• Growing fast!
MISSOURI COMPROMISE
• 11 free states• 11 slave states• Upset balance of power in Congress• Great Compromiser, Henry Clay
