Sports selections (see p. 11)recognize the very best we have to
offer. These athletes aremembers of respective teams that have been
recognized fortheir exemplary conduct as well. Those student
athletesrecognized will receive a certificate and an

officials that we deemnoteworthy. Take the time, forward
information noting suchto sportsmanship coordinator, Douglas Ames
so that hemight recognize these individuals for who they are and
whatthey represent.
Supersports – “Always a Winner”Every community has people who
proudly support our localathletes. Over the past four years,
Section VI has honoredsuch individuals at a half-time presentation,
communitybooster meeting, or end of the year banquet. Several
schoolsthat have done so include: Akron, City Honors,
Jamestown,Olean, Silver Creek, Southwestern, and Williamsville
East. It’sa great way to say thank you to those people for
theirunselfish support. If you know someone who should berecognized
as a “Supersport”, please forward their name toSportsmanship
coordinator Douglas Ames at Newfane.

Putting Sports in PerspectiveAs you have heard many times,
coaches are moral educators, ifnot by explicit instruction then at
least by the habits you instilland the examples you set. The game,
however, has a power notonly to uplift and encourage, it can
depress and ultimatelydestroy if not kept in perspective. Consider
the sad case of aformer major league pitcher whose life spiraled
downward aftergiving up the big homer in the playoffs, or the
former profootball player whose life ended in suicide. Coaches have
atremendous responsibility in this regard “what really
mattersmost”. As educators first, we must figure out how to do this
insuch a way that wey never let our players forget that no pitch,no
inning, no dropped pass, a missed foul shot, or no game,is…pardon
the sports metaphor, “the whole ball game” or touse the standard
expression, “It’s only a game.” Everyoneknows it’s a game, but we
need to state the obvious because it’seasy to become so absorbed in
the game that we forget theobvious. We as coaches need to remind
our players how luckythey are to be able to play, to be able to
pursue this unique kindof excellence for at least a small part of
their high school careers.
Time out for a sport thought…?As a Coach, what can you do to
instill the “spirit” of play inyour players? Parents? Fans?
Administrators?
Do you ever set aside some part of your practice foractivities
that are pure “fun”?
What are the most significant threats to the spirit of playin
sports?
Can you distinguish between the threats that come fromthe very
nature of competition and those that come fromexternal sources?

IT’S OFFICIAL…• During the fall of 2005, several sections across
the state

yellow card violations in soccer. It’s no secret thatsportsmanship
issues relating to both boys and girls soccerhave been a priority
concern throughout the country. Section6 adopted a much stricter
policy for multiple yellow cardviolations. Data collected by
coaches and officials is currentlybeing evaluated to determine the
impact on the game ingeneral. The outcome of this evaluation and
possiblerecommendations for the 2006 season will be posted in
thenear future.
• The National Federation of High School Officials
recentlyunveiled a multimedia campaign addressing the
growingproblems of steroid use at the high school level. It
containstwo 12-minute videos, one directed toward coaches and
theother towards parents. The NFHS is very upbeat concerningthe
early support of the program entitled “Making the RightChoice”. For
more information, visit the websitewww.nfhs.org/steroids.
• The need for new scholastic level sports officials has
neverbeen more obvious. I urge coaches, athletic administratorsand
educators to take a moment to see how you might help… well placed
classroom comments, local newspaper articlesor simply posting
