Sportsmanship in Action! Students learn immeasurable unique lessons though interscholastic athletic participation. Educators universally agree, of all the goals established as outcomes for secondary students involved in schools sports, sportsmanship is primary.
Students who learn to value and practice sportsmanlike behavior are developing the characteristics of good citizenship. Honesty, generosity, self discipline, a sincere concern for others, ethical behavior and a commitment to
fair play are all demonstrated in sportsmanship. Section VI and NYSPHSAA make sportsmanship a premier concern.
Section VI Programs Section VI All-WNY Good Sports Award Co-Chairs Jim Graczyk or Doug Ames Section VI instituted a program to recognize athletes and schools for good sportsmanship. One athlete and one school are selected from each division in each league to receive the All WNY Good Sportsmanship Award for each sport. The winners are sent certificates and are published in the Section VI Newsletter.
Section VI Coaches Sportsmanship Award Nomination Form (pdf) In recognition of exemplary sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the year as leaders and role models for our athletes, a coach is selected from each division within each league to receive a Sportsmanship Plaque and a t-shirt. The awards are presented to the coaches at the Section VI Annual Recognition Dinner in August.
NYSPHSAA Programs New York Sportsmanship Promotion Award NYSPHSAA Link The award is presented to schools which have developed proactive approaches to keep sportsmanship in the forefront with their students, coaches, spectators, and communities. (co-sponsored by Pupil Benefits Plan, Inc.)
Community Service Challenge Award New York State Public High School Athletic Association understands the importance of student athletes, coaches and schools giving back to the community which supports them NYSPHSAA has established a program for schools and students to assume a leadership role and give back to their community. Each year NYSPHSAA awards a member school with the Community Service Challenge Award. For more information about the community Service Challenge download the Program Information from Website.
