Buck Algonquin manufactures a full line of transmission couplers for most marine transmissions. Our cou-plers are cast from ductile iron and machined to SAE J755 specifications. Most of our couplers are machined withour universal bolthole pattern. As well, all of our couplers are supplied with mounting hardware. We also offer cus-tom machining for any couplers we do not standardly produce. We carry an extensive inventory in order to bettersupply our distributors and OEMs.

How Does The PSS Mechanical Shaft Seal Work?
The PSS Shaft Seal is a mechanical face seal thatis created between the flat surfaces of the rotatingstainless steel rotor and thestationarycarbonflange.Thestationarycarbonflangeisattachedtothevesselsstern tube with hose clamps and the carbon flangeisattached to the front sideof thebellowswithhoseclamps. The stainless steel rotor is fit on the shaft infront of the carbon flange. The stainless steel rotoris used to compress the bellows before the collar issecuredtotheshaftwithset-screws.Thiscompression(pre-load) maintains contact between the faces andallowsthePSStocompensateforthethrust fromthepropeller. The carbon flange is bored larger than theshaftdiameterallowingitto“float”aroundtheshaftandthuscompensateformostmisalignmentandvibrationproblems. The stainless steel collar is sealed to theshaft by two o-rings that are recessed into the boreof the collar. These o-rings rotate with the shaft andstainlesssteelrotoranddonotexperiencewearduringoperation.

HigH Density Carbon/grapHite FlangeThis space age composite is machined to shape. The face is then lapped to 4 light bands. Once installed and operational the carbon/graphite face will actually polish the stainless steel rotor face during the initial minutes of operation. This polishing process ensures a perfect seal and eliminates the necessity of a spray guard. The high density of this composite greatly increases its impact and wear resistance. At a maximum operating temperature of 500°F the carbon guards against any overheating situation unlike other seals using plastic derivatives. The carbon graphite flange should never need replacing under normal operating conditions.
allen HeaD set sCrewsAllen head set screws with cupped ends are threaded into the rotor and secured to the proper shaft. A second set screw is then threaded into each hole to secure the first screw and to prevent it from possibly backing out. The set screws also have an anti-vibration treatment applied.
bellowsThe EPDM bellows has a temperature rating of 300°F is resistant to petroleum based products and is very resistant to abrasions and set retention. It provides the best combination of durability, strength, and elasticity. The stern tube end of the bellow is available in 1/4" increments. both shaft and stern tube diameters are necessary when ordering.

nylon Hose barb Fitting***The nylon hose barb fitting is threaded into the carbon flange. The Barb fitting is used to plumb water to the seal or to run a vent line.

Precision tolerances are maintained by computer controlled lathe. The stainless steel should never need replacing under normal operating conditions.
