Introduction.Gyprock® plasterboard and CSR Fibre Cement
Wallboard can be used with masonry walls for effectivefire and acoustic solutions. These linings can eliminatethe need for render, increase the fire rating of themasonry, or provide an acoustic performance to meetsound transmission and sound impact ratings.
Systems incorporating masonry and an insulatedcavity are generally used where there is a requirementfor excellent acoustic performance and discontinuousconstruction. The provision of a cavity also allows theinclusion of services such as water pipes.
Gyprock® plasterboard may be directly applied tothe masonry substrate, screw fixed to metal furringchannels that are fixed to the masonry, or may be fixedto separate stud framing. CSR Fibre Cement Wallboardmay be fixed to furring channels or studs.
Systems in this section are suitable for a wide rangeof masonry products. These are typically clay andconcrete blocks, autoclaved aerated concrete blocks andpanels, and may include cast concrete elements.Minimum performance conditions apply to thesubstrates to achieve the system performance values, and these are stated in the system specifications. Specificfixing details apply to each type of substrate.
These wall systems are generally used in internalapplications in commercial, industrial, institutional, domestic and high-rise domestic construction, or in therenovation of older buildings. A number of systems forexternal masonry veneer walls can be found in Section‘B’ and Section ‘C’.
DesignConsiderations.
STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE.
All wall elements must be designed for the appliedloads. Vertical loads may be supported by the masonryelement of the wall or by the stud framing.
Lateral loads should be considered separately forframed and masonry parts of a wall. To achieve thespecified sound performance, ties from masonry to thestud framing must not be used.
Framed Wall Elements.
Guidance is given in Tables D2, D3, & D4 for theselection of Rondo studs and other specific sections innon-loadbearing internal walls only, for 0.25kPa and0.35kPa. For other brand of studs, studs that arerequired to be loadbearing, and studs subject to highlateral pressures, contact the manufacturer for designinformation. Maximum spans for Rondo furr ingchannels are given in Table D1.
Tall multi-residential buildings often have operabledoors and windows, resulting in internal walls beingsubject to wind pressure. In these cases, walls must bedesigned for the appropriate loads.
Stud frames that are part of a masonry wall systemmay be load bearing. A qualified structural engineermust complete the structural design of loadbearing wallsystems. Walls with shelving attached are consideredloadbearing.
Further information on the design of stud walls isgiven in Section ‘B’.
Walls lined with GYPROCK plasterboard designedas loadbearing, and non-loadbearing walls selected fromTables D2-D4, meet the requirements of BCASpecification C1.8 Clause 3.4 – Walls generally.

D4. The Red Book™
Masonry Wall Elements.
All brick and block wall elements are to be designedin accordance with AS3700 Masonry Structures.Concrete walls must be designed to AS3600, ConcreteStructures, and CSR Hebel Powerpanel™ must bedesigned in accordance with CSR Hebel literature.
FIRE RESISTANCE.
For systems without a stated Fire Resistance Level(FRL), the system FRL is equal to the FRL of themasonry wall element. The FRL of masonry walls isdependant on the height and width of the wall; contactthe manufacturer for more information.
To achieve the required fire performance of a wall, itis essential that installation is in accordance with themasonry manufacturer’s details and relevant installationstandards. This should include fire sealing at the wallhead and perimeters, and filling of mortar joints. Allgaps and penetrations should be effectively fire sealed.
Vermiculite plaster has no capacity to accommodatebuilding movement and may not be suitable for use as ageneral purpose fire rated caulking. Its use is specified insome wall/ceiling junctions. Refer to the Gyprock®
Ceiling Systems Installation Guide, NºGYP570.
In systems with Gyprock Fyrchek® plasterboard, framing, jointing and fire sealing must be in accordancewith Section ‘B’ of this manual. FYRCHEKplasterboard must be fully screw fixed, and the use ofGyprock Acrylic Stud Adhesive is not permitted .
ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE.
The acoustic performance of some systems isdependant on a minimum Rw of the masonry wallelement. This is to be the tested performance of themasonry without render or sheet linings, and must beverified by the masonry unit manufacturer.
Installation of the masonry element of the wall mustbe in accordance with the manufacturer’s details for thetested product.
Systems that meet the BCA requirements fordiscontinuous construction are noted in the systemspecifications. These have studs that are separated fromthe masonry by at least 12mm. The plasterboard liningon the studs (the wall leaf) therefore has a separation ofat least 12mm plus the depth of the stud, which exceedsthe BCA minimum of 20mm.
Systems that use only resilient mounts or fixing clipswith furring channels to create a cavity, do not meet therequirements of discontinuous construction.
The acoustic performance of wall systems may beaffected by:
• Sound flanking.
• The effectiveness of workmanship and caulking.
• The presence and treatment of penetrations.
• The inclusion of structural elements and bridgingitems.
• Reducing the stated or implied cavity sizes.
The acoustic performance of wall systems will notbe affected by:
• The addition of Gyprock® plasterboard or CSRFibre Cement linings.
• The use of deeper studs or larger cavities.
• The use of timber studs of at least equal depth in lieuof steel studs.
Refer to Section ‘A’ for detailed information.
Perimeter Sealing.
To attain the stated Rw in systems that do not relyon plasterboard for the fire rating, use CSR GyprockWet Area Acrylic Sealant, CSR Gyprock Fire Mastic orother tested acoustic rated material of equivalent orbetter performance.
Installation.MASONRY.
All brick and block walls are to be installed inaccordance with AS3700 Masonry Structures. CSRHebel Powerpanel™ must be installed in accordancewith CSR Hebel literature.
FRAMING.
For detailed information on wall junctions, intersections, frame attachments and penetrations, referto Section ‘Z’ of this manual.
Refer to manual NºGYP544, Steel Frame WallSystems Installation Guide for detailed information oninstallation of stud framing.
WALLBOARD & PLASTERBOARD FIXING.
Walls may be built to achieve a particular ‘Level ofFinish’ as defined in AS/NZS2589.1. The Level ofFinish specified can have requirements for framealignment, jointing, back blocking methods and sheetor ientation. CSR Fibre Cement Wallboard andGyprock® plasterboard may be installed vertically orhorizontally, although for some Levels of Finishhorizontal sheeting must be used.
The Red Book™D5.
Except for fire grade plasterboard, fixing to framingmay be fastener only or combination fastener/adhesive.Plasterboard fixed direct to masonry may be adhesivedaub fixed as shown in installation diagram FIG D4,full bed adhesive fixed, or mechanically fixed.
JOINTING & FINISHING.
Refer to the Gyprock® Residential InstallationGuide, NºGYP547 and CSR Fibre Cement Wet AreaLining Systems, NºFC101 for detailed jointing andfinishing information.
It should be noted that:
• Multi-layered systems only require jointing andfinishing of the outer layer.
• It is a requirement of the BCA that a water resistanttaping compound, such as CSR Gyprock & FibreCement Wet Area Base Coat, be used at vertical walljunctions (corners), and horizontal and verticaljoints within wet areas such as showers.
CONTROL JOINTS.
Control joints must be installed to allow forstructural movement. Allowance for movement must bemade through the masonry and any direct fixed lining, and through framed wall elements. Refer to Section ‘Z’of this manual for details.
Control joints must be installed at all constructionjoints in the building, and at the following locations:
For masonry with any direct fixed lining or liningfixed to furring channels:
• Refer to masonry manufacturer.
• At 12m maximum centres.
• At change of substrate material.
For stud framed wall elements:
• Non-tiled internal walls with fibre cement outerlayer: at 7.2m maximum centres.
• Tiled internal walls with fibre cement outer layer: at4.2m maximum centres.
• Walls with plasterboard outer layer : at 12mmaximum centres.
Components.LINING & FIXING MATERIALS.
Refer to Section ‘A’ of this manual for detailedinformation on CSR Gyprock and Fibre Cement liningproducts, masonry adhesive, and for fastenerspecifications for fixing GYPROCK plasterboard tosteel studs and furring channel.
CSR Gyprock Masonry Adhesive is a fast andconvenient method of fixing GYPROCK plasterboardsystems to masonry substrates. CSR Gyprock AcrylicStud Adhesive is used for fixing non fire grade linings toframing.
