Codes & Conventions

In your groups of 4 YOU MUST spend 3 minutes on EACH area deciding what YOU would expect from an Action-Adventure text (movie) in relation to:

- Narrative (Plot, themes & issues presented to the audience)

- Genre (What would you expect to be ‘repeated’ – Steve Neale? How are the audience entertained?)

- Media Language (Where are Action-Adventure texts set? What props would you expect to see in the genre?)

- Representation (What types of characters would you expect to see according to Propp? How are gender roles represented?)

Character deconstruction:

YOU MUST annotate the non-verbal codes presented in this image of well known Action-Adventure character Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) in answering the question:

What does he represent?

Stick this in after completing the task!

Page 12: Section A - Introduction

What does he represent?

Strong ‘Alpha-male’

Open shirt connotes how he will provide a ‘female gaze’ (Diana Saco) for the female (Hartley) audience.

Iconography – The weapon connotes how he is a ‘Tough Guy’ (Yvonne Tasker – 1993) that will provide some heroism and bravery to the narrative –

What do we expect from Jones’ character as well?
