Section 3.4 Solving Equations with Distribution on Both Sides Ms. Mayer
Dec 23, 2015
BasicsDistribute on Both Sides First!
Simply the expression (combine like terms)
Goal: Move the variable to the positive side
Solve the Equation using Inverse Relationships
Remember: You always want to solve for the Variable, “X = ?”
4 (1- x ) + 3x = -2(x + 1)
4 (1- x ) + 3x = -2(x + 1)
4 + -4x + 3x = -2x - 2
4 + -1x = -2x + -2
+2x + 2x
4 + 1x = -2
-4 -4
x = -6
Change Sub --> +
Distribute on BOTH sides
Simply the Equation
Do the Inverse Relationship to get the Variables on the LEFT SIDE
Do the Inverse of Addition [subtraction]
-3(4x + 1) + 6x =4(2x -6)
-3(4x + 1) + 6x =4(2x + -6)
-12x + -3 + 6x = 8x + -24
-6x + -3 = 8x + -24
- 8x = -8x
-14x + -3 = -24
+3 = + 3
-14x = -21
-14 -14
x = 3/2
Change Sub --> +
Distribute on BOTH sides
Simply the Equation
Do the Inverse Relationship to get the Variables on the LEFT SIDE
Do the Inverse of Subtraction [Addition]
Inverse of Mult. = Div
