Section 3 Definition of UST Tanks and Piping Any one or combination of tanks and connected pipes used to contain an accumulation of regulated substances, and the total volume is 10% or more below ground.

A UST is any one or combination of tanks and connected pipes used to contain an accumulation of regulated substances, and the total volume is 10% or more below ground.Section 3 Types of USTs & Construction Material Tanks and PipingSingle- walledDouble-walledInterstitial Space (Annular)SteelFiberglassJacketedCompartmentalizedVaulted

The simplest type of UST is the single-walled tanks. Single-walled USTs are constructed with only one wall to hold product.

Double-walled tanks have an inner wall in contact with product and an outer wall that is in contact with the ground. Double-walled tanks have an small space or void between the inner and outer walls. This space is commonly called the interstitial space or the annular space. Tanks can be constructed of steel (which includes bare steel, coated steel, clad or jacketed steel), and also fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Tanks may be compartmentalized to store more than one type of product.

A vaulted UST is a tank in which a portion of the tank if above groundSection 3 Piping Definition Tanks and Piping Hollow conduit constructed of non-earthen materialsDesigned to transfer productIncludes product lines, vapor lines, vent lines, and riser piping.

Piping is defined as a hollow conduit constructed of non-earthen materials, designed to transfer product. Some of the different types of piping include product lines, vapor lines, vent lines, and riser piping.Section 3 Piping Systems Tanks and Piping Suction PipingPressurized PipingAtmospheric Vent lines Riser piping Vapor lines

Product piping systems can be either suction or pressurized. A suction system has a pump located at the dispenser and only operates when dispensing product. A pressurized system has the pump located above the tank and is always pressurized, ready to dispense product. Atmospheric piping systems include vent lines, riser piping, and vapor lines.Section 3 Types of Pipe Tanks and Piping Single-WallDouble-WallSteelCoated SteelFiberglass Reinforced PlasticFlexible Plastic

Piping can be either single-walled or double-walled, and is constructed from steel, coated steel, fiberglass-reinforced plastic, and flexible plastic.Section 3 Regulated Substances Tanks and Piping GasolineEthanol BlendsKeroseneDieselHeating Oil

Regulated substances or product refers to petroleum and petroleum-based products. Examples include gasoline, ethanol blends, kerosene, diesel, and heating oil.
