TYPES OF CHEMICAL BONDS

Bonds involve the electrons in an atom.

1. Ionic Bonds• Electrons are transferred from one

atom to another• Formed from ions with a similar

opposite charge• Ex: Mg2+ and O2-

TYPES OF CHEMICAL BONDS

2. Covalent Bonds• Electrons are shared between

the atoms• Not always shared equally

TYPES OF CHEMICAL BONDS

3. Van der Waals Forces

(Intermolecular)• Unequal sharing of electrons

can create regions of a molecule that are charged. • These charged areas are

attracted to regions on a nearby molecule with an opposite charge.
