Low Energy Building

With European Union targets committed to cutting carbon emissions by 20% by 2020 and 60% by2050, the impetus is there for the industry to produce low energy houses and buildings. This isbacked up by Building Regulations and standards, such as Passivhaus, the Code for SustainableHomes and BREEAM.

The next few years is likely to see demand for premium and high performance insulants grow asenergy standards get tighter. This, coupled with higher fuel prices and consumer demand for low-energy buildings, will see this sector grow to become the norm.

Kingspan Insulation is at the forefront of the low energy building drive, helping architectsand developers get the most energy efficient building envelope performance whilst taking upminimal space.

Existing buildings offer the greatest opportunity to reduce carbon emissions from the stock.Whilst new buildings account for just 1 to 2% of the housing stock per annum, more than 70% ofbuildings standing today will still exist in 2050.

Programmes and initiatives to upgrade existing stock are in evidence in European markets for bothdomestic and non-domestic sectors.

Kingspan Insulation offers products and solutions for all types of refurbishment. The solutionsoffered for refurbishment will depend upon the individual circumstances of the project, such asroom size; whether the building is in a conservation area; the desired thermal and air tightnessperformance; and the structural integrity of the refurbishment.

Kingspan Range

IntroductionKingspan Thermataper® Systems have beendeveloped to solve problems associated withrainwater ponding on flat roofs. KingspanThermataper® Systems comprise taperedinsulation boards, flat packer boards, pre-mitred hip and valley boards and the market'sleading tapered roofing design service.Kingspan Thermataper® products aredesigned: for use under most waterproofingmembranes; to provide required roof falls; andto provide insulation to meet the requirementsof Building Regulations / Standards.

BenefitsSimplerOn new roofs, the use of KingspanThermataper® Systems eliminates the needto incorporate a fall into the design ofthe roof deck. On existing roofs, a KingspanThermataper® Systems and a newwaterproofing membrane can be laid on topof the original waterproofing. This eliminatesthe need for stripping down the roof to decklevel, and the provision of a vapour check maynot be required.

CheaperUsing Kingspan Thermataper® Systems toachieve a U-value of 0.16 W/m2.K could be upto or over 26% cheaper than using alternativemethods (e.g. timber firrings or screed) tocreate a fall in a flat roof for rainwater drainagepurposes.

QuickerKingspan Thermataper® Systems avoid a wettrade and do not need time to dry out savingtime in the scheduling of a constructionproject. It has been estimated that screed tofalls systems may require up to 195 days ormore to dry.

LighterKingspan Thermataper® Systems are also alighter weight alternative to screeding and theydo not present the risk of an overloadedstructure due to excessive screed depths.Kingspan Thermataper® Systems can be aslittle as 1.5% or less of the weight of a solutionusing screed to falls with a flat insulation board.

Less WastePre-mitred boards reduce waste from theinstallation process. Insulation boards are cutin half by Kingspan Insulation in its factory tomake mitred hip and valley boards. These aresingle picked to match the tapered systemdesign so as to reduce waste from cutting hipsand valleys on site. Both (hip and valley) halvesof the cut board and used and the only wasteis the dust generated by sawing. Whereaswhen boards are cut on site, up to 50% of thecut boards could be wasted, depending on theparticulars of the specific board layout and fallsdesign.

match the markings on the boards to createan easy to install system that is delivered directto site. Installation of Kingspan Thermataper®

Systems is simple using these easy to followdrawings and, to facilitate installation, eachboard type is packed separately in labelledshrink wrapped packs.

Condensation Risk AnalysisIncluded in the design service is the calculationof condensation risk in accordance withBS 5250: 2002 (Code of practice for control ofcondensation in buildings). This ensures thatany predicted dew point is above the vapourcontrol layer at the point in the KingspanThermataper® Systems with the thinnestinsulation layer, whilst also ensuring anycondensation risk is within the limits given inBS 5250: 2002.

Calculation of U-ValuesU-Values for Kingspan Thermataper® Systemsare calculated in accordance with Annex C ofBS EN ISO 6946: 1997 (Building Componentsand Building Elements). Annex C outlines thecalculation procedure to determine the totalthermal transmittance of tapered insulation -termed the 'Annex C U-Value'.

Efficiency by DesignKingspan Thermataper® Systems come withfirst class design services. This ensures thatthe most cost–effective solution for a roof isidentified and that the end result is a taperedsystem design which meets the roof’srainwater run–off and insulation requirements.

Board Layout & Falls DesignThe board layout and falls of even the mostcomplex tapered system can be designedquickly and effectively, ready for clientapproval. The design will illustrate the requireddirection of drainage and will also take intoaccount U–value, condensation risk and winduplift requirements, as well as minimum /maximum rise restrictions. Client amendmentsor revisions can be easily incorporated. This board layout and falls design serviceoperates under a quality control systemcertified to BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 (Qualitymanagement systems. Requirements).

Once the final design has been accepted bythe client and the Kingspan Thermataper®

Systems is ordered, a working drawing will beproduced on waterproof paper. This drawingwill clearly set out the fall pitch, fall directionand fixing of each board type and will clearly

System Overview

IntroductionThe Kingspan KoolDuct® System is anadvanced and innovative pre-insulatedair-distribution ductwork system fabricatedusing premium performance insulation panels. It can provide the optimum energy savingand environmental solution in comparisonwith other ductwork systems.

Benefits Kingspan KoolDuct® panels, fabrication

methods, jointing systems and a completeline of accessories produce a Systemwhere air leakage can be reduced to afraction of that typical of sheet metalductwork.

The minimal air leakage rate of the Systemcan yield significant electrical consumptionsavings because of reduced heating andcooling loads – saving up to 30% on theannual cost of running a fan.

The installed cost of the KingspanKoolDuct® System can be up to 19%cheaper than insulated sheet steelductwork as a result of reduced materialand labour costs. Furthermore, over a30 year life it can also make a saving ofover 20% on operating costs.

The ability to fabricate ductwork in up to3 m long sections means fewer sectionsand less handling. This combined with therequirement for fewer supports and itssingle fix installation results in a fast trackinstallation – up to three times faster.

The space required for the manual processof applying the insulation above theductwork as a second fix is eliminated asthe System can installed flush to the ceiling- saving up to 150-200 mm of valuablespace.

Weighing up to 85% less than sheet steelductwork, it can overcome severeconstraints on structural loadings in olderbuildings that cannot support additionalweight.

The thermal conductivity of KingspanKoolDuct® panels is 0.021 W/m·K, thelowest of any commonly used insulationmaterial. A low thermal conductivity allowsthinner insulation to achieve the requiredthermal performance.

The Kingspan KoolDuct® System, using thealuminium grip flange and / or tiger jointingsystems, is the only rigid phenolic pre-insulated ductwork system in the world tobe UL Listed as a Class 1 Air Duct toStandard for Safety UL 181.

Distributed air flows over sealed aluminiumsurfaces, minimising any risk of loose fibresentering the air handling system.

Achieves an A BRE Green Guide Rating.
