Parish Mission Statement: We are a Catholic community of imperfect people growing in faith, caring for each other and reaching out to our neighbors in need.
Have you ever thanked someone for an act of kindness, only to have them respond with, "It was nothing"? It is a funny response, because to you the act was obviously more than nothing! Perhaps they say it is because the act seemed trivial. Compare this to the offerings of the widow in today's first reading. Elijah asked for bread and she said she had none to share. She had only a "handful of flour" and a little oil in her jug, and seemed ashamed that she could not offer him more. Maybe she is right -- her offering is a bit meager. But she gave what she had, and Elijah took what she offered. She gave ALL. In return for her selfless gift, God provided her with a bottomless jar of flour and a lifetime supply of oil. The lesson here is that no gift of self is too small. Give what you have and let God be the judge of its value -- I can assure you He will not see it as "nothing!" And the next time someone thanks you, don't brush off your act, because to them, it made all the difference.

Come Holy Spirit, quiet my heart and my head, as I gather with my family, friends and neighbors to celebrate Mass.
Quiet the thoughts and distractions that will keep me from worship.
Open my mouth in prayer and song.
Open my ears to hear God’s Word.
Open my eyes to the mystery of the Eucharist.
Open my heart to receive Jesus with love.
May I go forth strengthened to take the Mass into my life this week. Amen.
Expecting a new baby? You are invited to receive a special pre-natal blessing from Father Dan. A white rose dedicated to you will be placed by the statue of Mary as a symbol that the entire parish is praying for you and your baby. The blessings are normally given at 6pm on the first Monday of every month. Following the blessing there is a Baptismal Preparation Class to help you prepare for this important day in your child’s life. Call the Parish Office to register.

In 1 Samuel, God advises the prophet Samuel not to observe as men see, but as God sees. He tells him to "look to the heart." This is the movement of Sunday's Gospel. "Beware the scribes," Jesus advises. He points out their public greetings and "seats of honor," which is in sharp contrast to their private greed. For Jewish people of Jesus' day, honor resides at the top. Power and prestige created a
high profile back then as it still does today. After His warning, Jesus turns His disciples' attention elsewhere: a poor widow. "She, from her poverty, has contributed all she had." While the scribes donated large sums to the temple, they did so "from their surplus wealth." This woman -- in
her faith and devotion -- offers "her whole livelihood." Jesus invited His disciples to see with God's eyes, to recognize a holy life in people the world overlooks. Today's Gospel begs a few questions. What do we see? Whom do we value? Are we impressed by the pomp and circumstance of modern day Pharisees? Do we ignore their self-righteousness because it looks impressive, even seems somewhat helpful? The point isn't to judge the scribes, of course. God can see their hearts as well, and those assessments are firmly his responsibility. The point is to turn our eyes from the typically honored to the rarely respected. Are we disinterested in the poverty of the modern day widows? Do we ignore their faith because we forget to look for it? This Sunday, consider the widows in your own life. Who can you see with God's eyes?
