Prime Time Lesson #3Objectives:

TLW be able to summarize what is read to help develop their comprehension of text

Skill/Strategy: Summarizing Predicting

Interactive Strategy: Movement Pair Share

Teacher InputSummarizing is restating the essence of text or an experience in as few words as possible. Students must be able to analyze (study) information and organize it in a way that captures the main idea and supporting details that is stated in their own words. Inform students that they can summarize in different ways, including deleting information that is not important to the story, substituting some information, and keeping some information.

Materials Needed Video Clip (Nanny McPhee Returns) Poem, “Sick”, by Shel Silverstein Selection, “The Princess and the Pea” Lyrics, “Dear Mama” by Tupac Song, “Dear Mama” (audio clip) Copies of Sense-O-Gram and Five W’s

Procedure:Whole Group:

1. Show a brief video clip of a movie and ask students to summarize what they saw. Their summary should include the 5W + H question words…Who is the story about, What is the conflict or problem, Where (setting), When, Why is there a problem, and How is the conflict or problem solved? Have students discuss their information.

Reading Activity: “The Princess and the Pea”Preread:Preview the title and ask students if they know this story and take some predictions. Read as a class. Discuss the story.Postread:Put students into groups of 2-3. Give each a copy of, “The Princess and the Pea” summaries. They are to read the summaries and decide which is the best summary. Remind them of what a summary should be (Summary #2 is the answer) They have to defend their answer and be ready to explain it to the class.

Practice:1. Pass out the poem, “Sick” by Shel Silverstein. The teacher will read it aloud while the

students follow along. After the reading is complete have the students summarize the poem and count the number of words in their summary. They then summarize the poem again, using only one word. Students will explain their choices and discuss the various words offered as a summary. The class will choose the one word that best represents what is happening in the poem. (Important- when a student chooses the most important word in a text, they tap into their comprehension of the text in ways that are individual, guided by their own response to the reading.)

Prime Time Lesson #3Independent Practice:

1. Pass out the Sense-o-Gram activity sheet.2. Pass out the lyrics from the song, “Dear Mama” by Tupac and play the song. 3. As the song is playing have the students to jot down words or phrases from the song that

appeal to sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Encourage them to illustrate the words or phrases if necessary.

4. Once they have completed the activity sheet have them to create a summary (one paragraph) of “Dear Mama”. Their summary should include the 5W’s and H. Students can use the Five W’s Chart to prepare to write their paragraphs. Collect the summary paragraphs at the end of class.
