Reading focus: how is the writing structured? 48

    Starting points: imperatives

    5.1

Imperatives are verbs that give a command. Read the sentences below then write

down the imperative(s) in each one. The first one has been highlighted for you.

First, mix the ingredients together thoroughly.

Follow the ball with your eyes and body so that you do not lose contact with it.

If you intend to go on holiday to the Far East, visit your doctor first to check which

    vaccinations you need.

Take three kilos of fresh tomatoes and remove the skins by soaking them in

boiling water for no more than ten seconds.

How do I do this? How do I do this?

Lets investigate How do you write clear instructions?

What sort of language do you use to help

    the reader?

The text on the facing page comes from a website for BMX fans. As you read it

    through, think about:

how the text is set out

    the use of artwork

the use of particular words to explain how to do the trick.

Objectives COOL MOVES FOR COOL BMXERSTRICK 1: THE MANUAL

    Whats the trick?

Put simply, this trick is about pulling the front wheel up,

then balancing without using the pedals. Sounds easy! But

remember this is a really important trick as it is the basis for

lots more difficult ones, so its worth getting right.

    Starting off

Make sure the bike is at a standstill. Then, place your hands on

the handlebars, and stand on the pedals in a relaxed position.

Now move your weight backward, until your backside is behind

the seat. At the same time, pull up on the handlebars. As youll

see, the front wheel should start to lift. Dont bend your arms too

much, and concentrate on balancing the bike and holding it

    steady.

Remember look right in front of you. Choose a point to look at,

but dont look at the ground! If you think you might topple off

your bike, or fall backwards, give a slight pull on the back brake.

    Developing the skill

Once you have got the basic move sorted, try the same trick on a

slight incline (hill or slope) and you will soon develop the skill for

use in many other street or ramp tricks.

    Variations

The same basic move is the basis for lots of similar tricks, such as

the bunny hop manual, one-handed manual or one-footed manual.

You can also use it for the start of many flatland tricks such as

manual to barspin or one-footed peg manual.
